The Slims - "Only A Part, Not The Whole"

KRAKE is an annual Berlin based festival for challenging electronic music. Krake means „octo- pus“ and the festival is organised in a comparable way: reaching out to selected locations during one week presenting the best in electronic music whatever style it is. The festival is not huge, not expensive, does not have big sponsoring deals or four different colour are passes. It’s just a good and so far successful try to bring back the focus on artists who dare to step off the beaten tracks. 
KRAKE 002 contains mostly exclusive tracks of artists who played at the Krake festival in 2013. The A-side starts with a dark ambient drone by DÄMMERN, followed by a pop-fueled two-step hit by PHON.O. Next in line is Irishman EOMAC with a warm and deep IDM track already char- ted by none less than Thom Yorke of Radiohead, followed by „Resolution“, a little melancholic stepper by BILL YOUNGMAN. 
The B-side is being opened with a techno track by grandmaster MONOLAKE in his most typical dubby percussive style. For the next track FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER reduces the sounds to the max again to deliver a percussive track as minimalistic as can be. Legendary techno producer CRISTIAN VOGEL, known for his constant search for new values, closes the compilation with an avantgarde piece of noise and drones.

Paradiso

London based migrant Throwing Snow makes tracks to melt into. Following his compelling 2010 debut on Alexander Nut’s Ho_Tep imprint and remixes for the likes of Gold Panda and Glasser he returns to Super with emerging vocal talent Py.

Wallow is at the same time sultry, shadowy and glistening. Throwing Snow displays effortless finesse as Py’s raw, soulful delivery adds emotion. Py is joined by the captivating Russell Morgan on The Shadows I Make, an affecting arrangement built around the pairs’ contrasting vocal styles whilst As The Rain Spits sees Py’s vocal chopped and screwed for a proper drum machine workout.

The release is completed by remixes from Lapalux, PhOtOmachine and Raffertie. Lapalux is in full effect, his beat collage blurring the line between digital precision and analogue warmth. Brixton based PhOtOmachine blends subtle elements of the original into a bumping house version as label head Raffertie brings Py’s vocal to the fore, illuminating her enchanting performance.

'Sloh' is il:lo’s fourth EP. Keeping in tune with their previous EP, their sound is a meeting of acoustic and synthetic instruments. Thereby mallets and brass converse with moogs and Junos. In 'Sloh', the production is designed as more electronic but still organic.

The symbiosis between heavy basses notes and atmospheric pads reminds the one between the body and the soul. The building heading into the sky of the cover illustrates this idea. In songs such as 'Niyati' the deep bass fixes the feet to the ground while the heady melody rises the soul.

'Sloh' is a new road on which il:lo wants to invite the listener. A journey to feel new emotions. Some parts of this road are peaceful ('Alma') while others have to be climbed to reach the top and discover new places ('a.me', 'Sloh') and let go. At the end of the journey the listener is invited to walk alongside the Austrian river of 'Ybbs', and to conclude the trip with a last (progressive) ascent ('Cami').
