Sometimes tracks evolve on their own. Even in the digital realm. I will explain in a bit. First an explanation as to why I am writing a long description. This beat is a milestone in my music making career. This is my first track ever on a physical MPC. The specific model is the MPC2000XL. I've always wanted an MPC. I own an s1000, an s900, a Roland s330, a Roland w30, a Yamaha TX16w, and a Casio RZ1, and always wanted an MPC. I just never got around to finding one or I felt they were overpriced for the feature set. Just like an sp1200 went from 700 bucks used to over two grand now on ebay. Never felt the price is justified when software can do it all. I have created sketches on music making software a lot, including the iOS MPC app, but always wanted to know what it was like to create on a physicalMPC. So I bought one and began learning how to sample, create programs, trim and edit samples, and record sequences all in one night but I did read the manual first for a few days. I didn't really spend time thinking about what drum sounds or samples I wanted to use because I just wanted to practice the basics. After a few hours(really, a few HOURS)I came up with this snippet. I added an intro and some vocal tags to not leave anything too open after dumping the output to my PC. What's funny is that stuff like this usually takes me 15 minutes to bang out. Now I know why people are dumping their MPC's for stupid cheap. Yet, there's something organic about creating and editing on this machine that I think I really like and can see this becoming habit forming. With my other sampler boxes I just sample first then output into Ableton and Logic for sequencing and never bother saving to floppy disk or scsi drive. That process just stopped being fun and I spend a lot of time in front of computer for the pay check anyways. So now I just have another tool that helps lose the dependency on a computer. Why the Latin vibe for this track? Let's just say that that's the new west coast vibe right now for me. Especially since Dia de Los Muertos is right around the corner. Feedback greatly appreciated.
