Malibu Dan was moving on from KLSX-FM to a job as a TV production assistant. The Regular Guys did a Best Of show airing old clips, and then Jewish Defense League Chairman Irv Rubin called in. Irv Rubin was later convicted of conspiring to blow up government buildings, and died in prison in 2000.

The moment The Regular Guys hit the airwaves of WKLS-FM/Atlanta! I had heard of them during their KLSX run because I was an aspiring radio guy myself. I had attempted to tune them in on a trip to L.A., but heard Conway & Steckler instead and got confused, not knowing the Regular Guys were already booted. But when I heard they were coming to Atlanta, I had tape running to catch them hot off the stove, before they had a chance to be watered down or, worse, fired.

This is also from the Regular Guys' first day in Atlanta at 96 Rock. This is the conversation that sold me. They had been talking about Magic Johnson's then-new talk show, then moved to Sinbad hosting The Vibe. When Eric says "surprisingly orange," I died! This was the show for me! I took this into the production room at the tiny AM station I worked at and waved people in to play this and say, "Listen to the new guys on 96 Rock!" (About 12 mins is chopped so we could get to the caller in the car, who brought Sinbad back up.)

In the 96 Rock years the Regular Guys would still call upon Maibu Dan for some segments. This was a great one called Pot Talk. It gets derailed when high school girls get involved. (NOTE: I trimmed about 15 minutes worth of calls and chit chat to present the best part.) Sometime in November 2002.

Travis Elliot of the Georgia Mall Association calls to inform everyone that within the next month there will be separate mall parking for women. This is due to their statistically-proven poor driving skills. I believe Peter, the gay male from Midtown, may in fact be the same guy playing Travis Elliot! Travis seems to have had many jobs over the years.

Either a pedestrian or motorist veered in front of Steve as he was on his way to work on Spring Street, causing him to swerve into a telephone pole. Time off from work, morphine and Coyote Ugly girls at his bedside were the result. Something I inadvertently trimmed was that this was a brand-new 96 Rock van that didn't even have the decals applied yet! They sure sounded warmer and fuzzier toward each other back then. Someone taped this from a "Worst of the Regular Guys" and posted an MP3 long ago. I trimmed this down for the Internet, adding static in the cuts so you'll get the idea. Anyone know a date for this?

George "Space Ghost" Lowe sat in on a News Jog, and spent most of it tearing Southside Steve to shreds! If this had been "Make the Regular Guys Laugh," George would've cleaned out the prize closet! This was another MP3 someone posted long ago, so I don't have a date. I think I remember this from 2003. Anyone know for sure? This is originally over 20 minutes, I edited it to the good parts.

When Eric got booted, I dug out a couple of old CD's to reminisce. This discussion on cloning from the News Jog demonstrates the kind of great riffing they could do on a philosophical, cerebral topic, which is what made the show unique. This is back when space cults like Heaven's Gate seemed to get in the news with some frequency. (The show didn't really jump from the News Jog theme to the topic, that was my slick editing.)

A girl on an OxyContin binge calls in and gets put on the phone with Tommy the Tard. This unfolded so perfectly, I keep listening for signs it was staged. This and the Pot Talk segment are great examples of the kind of serendipitous hiliarity that would take place on this show on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis in the early days.

Intern Church Chick comes in to discuss the gifts she got for Christmas. This is a great example of how the Regular Guys could shoot the breeze about anything and create something great, without need for structured bits and wacky, manufactured characters. Even better than Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, who originated this style (I think).
