UPRISING (rivolta) for contrabass clarinet and live electronic

The title "Uprising" conveys multiple ideas, each referencing distinct concepts. The first pertains to a sonic phenomenon: the higher energy of the audio spectrum rising above the lower fundamentals. The second draws from the English meaning of a violent revolt, serving as a metaphor for the spirit of the piece.
Alongside the clarinet and its electroacoustic transformation, a key element is introduced: the kick drum, a staple of dance-oriented electronic music. This choice was made for its physical impact as a sonic "cliché" and its tonal resemblance to certain timbres in the clarinet's lower register. Detached from its typical role of maintaining regular metric patterns, the kick drum is reimagined to create fluid, pulsating sound objects.

ABOUT
“Stygian pulse” (2023) refers to a chronic throbbing pain in my left shoulder and neck that I have been experiencing for over ten years. It is shapeshifting in its colour and intensity and even its sonic properties, but most days it is an inky, dark, and dull recurrence. The normal medical routes for pain relief have proven ineffective beyond a temporary period.

While the pain doesn’t majorly inhibit any of my daily activities, my inability to alleviate it has
created a sort of “settling:” the pain has become mundane, foreverhere – unpredictable in its exact rhythm or temperament, but with a certitude that it will return, beating darkly. As a feature of my body for over a third of my time on Earth, I’m quite sure it’s here until the end. My stygian pulse – tiny focused outbursts until I die.

Premiered by Hannah Levinson (viola) at June in Buffalo 2018.

In 11-edo (11 equal divisions of the octave). 

The tuning sounded not too different from 12, especially the 2nds/7ths and the minor 3rd/major 6th somewhat. I found that it was the supermajor third/subminor 6th and the 4th/5th that were particularly "pungent" and interesting.

I also considered how to make a solo piece sound clearly microtonal.

This week on From the Top, legendary jazz pianist Fred Hersch collaborates with young performers with guest host Yuga Cohler. We hear a teenage pianist join Hersch in a piano duo performance of Samuel Barber, an award-winning string quartet wows the audience with Mendelssohn, and a young cellist performs one of Hersch’s original compositions, “Bittersweet Tango”.

PYROLUTION (Orchestral cover also read the description)

Reilly Spitzfaden (they/them) is a composer who likes noise, code, electronics, and nostalgia. They build handmade electronic instruments, design interactive software interfaces, and repurpose audio and telecommunications equipment as instruments.

Reilly's recordings appear on How Things Are Made, S3E02; in the Media Sandbox and Michigan State University Department of Theatre film (313) Choices; and on the recording Statements with the Michigan State University composition studio. Reilly’s compositions have been performed at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse and the TaPIR Lab, and by the Eastman BroadBand, members of ensemble mise-en, the Amaranth Quartet, OSSIA New Music, and How things are made.

Reilly is currently a lecturer in music technology at SUNY Geneseo. They hold a PhD in composition from the Eastman School of Music where they studied with Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, David Liptak, and Oliver Schneller; an MA in composition from Eastman, where they studied with Robert Morris and Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez; and a BM in composition from Michigan State University.
