Luke Hess arrives on Rekids Special Projects with ‘Detroit Visions’.

With original releases and remix material on labels such as Omar S’ FXHE Records, Carl Craig’s Planet-E, Motech, Echocord, and his own DeepLabs imprint, Luke Hess is no stranger to expanding the boundaries of electronic music. Preparing his first full release on Rekids Special Projects this June, the Detroit born and raised DJ/producer drops four inventive techno cuts for Radio Slave’s imprint.

Across the release, Hess plays with classic dub techno sensibilities, distilling his years of experience into a set of highly playable, evolving club tracks. From the interplaying chords and pads on opener ‘Two Prophets’ to the dense acid lines on ‘Polymoon’, Hess’ mastery of the genre is on full display across ‘Detroit Visions’.

"I've been a fan of Matt's music and the label in general for ages and have played so many tracks from the catalogue in my DJ sets over the years. When Matt asked me for music, I was over the moon, and I still haven't quite come down yet. This EP is inspired by my mid-90s warehouse party days & the feeling I still get while driving around in Detroit. Primary [colours] life begins with the Echo Inspector's creation, Lunar Shadows. Exploring the depths of space, Lunar Shadow’s form begins humble, discreet, with its stealth like kick forming structure around dark matter, playful hats, deep sub and intertwining textures and layered frequencies. Life emerges organically, evolving before it takes one final deep breath and re-emerges capable and built for the un-yielding journey ahead before finally completing its calling.

﻿Lunar Shadow’s second incarnation comes by the way of the talented Luke Hess [DeepLabs/Echocord/FXHE].  Lunar Shadows finds new life with its forceful techno pattern.  Gritty, warm chords layer themselves over an insistent rhythm while off beat micro-organisms keep stride. Gentle pads envelop and grow in authority, weaving their way through the groove, creating power, tension and intensity - consequently leading Lunar Shadows to become an everlasting memory before finally waning and leaving you wanting for more.

Over the ages the Moon has helped us describe everything from rarity, love and lunacy. This release is another interpretation by us to the overstanding sphere in the sky.

Kicking off with direct, subtle and in-tune basement dust, Skudge has managed to capture two weekend modes.

This is a soundtrack for either those apprehensive moments, where things start to fall into place and the crowd is rest assured that this will be a time to remember.

But Soundworks is also the soundtrack for those areas that turn party-goers into altered silhouettes, captured between strobe light flashes. Those types of situations, where the smoke and sweat meet in between the last dances.

From start to finish, the fourth album carries a sound that is coherent. What Soundworks means, is that all of the nine tracks on the LP are multi-dimensional, without losing traction. There are adrenal spikes but there are also drifters - most significant in the tracks ’Floating’, ’Scape’ and ’Likemind’.

All-in-all, what we have here is a return to form for Skudge, with a capital S.

The B-side of this humorously titled release is hands down one of my favourite tracks of all time, and definitely my favourite Levon Vincent creation. One of the few records that I can honestly say is well worth the high marketplace price, though I hope my copy gives me years of play! There's really no fitting description for this shifting chugger; it's a totally melodic and dubby slice of techno with a nice, subtle tinge of house-y-ness. It keeps going and going, with every element in its perfect place. Lots of reverb and warped sounds that build a series of layered loops from some ultimately quite simple components. For me that's the mark of perfection: a fugue-like cycle that plays on a perfect kick, bass drum, etc. And did I mention there are some VERY fat synth chords? Oh, and I just listened to it again and must add that there are some sweet pitched up lasers. I've always had a soft spot for the sound of lasers! Mmmmmm, Woman Is The Devil indeed.

The 'UR Mad Mike Remix' features founding UR member Mike Banks with edits by Skurge & Ray 7. On the 'DirtTech UR Remix' Mad Mike collaborated with Waajeed, who previously worked together with Slum Village, Roy Ayers and Radiohead.
