Hilit Kolet unveils a striking remix of Terry Farley and Wade Teo’s ‘Why We Dance’ on Rekids.

Following releases on Defected and Faith, rapidly rising house star Hilit Kolet makes her debut on Radio Slaves’ Rekids with a remix of Faith affiliate Terry Farley and XOYO’s Wade Teo ‘Why We Dance’, originally released in 2022. Kolet’s remix arrives this December and will be an exclusive track included in Rekids’ recap of its best releases of this year, the House Of Rekids 2023 compilation. 

Kolet’s remix amplifies the original with crisp drums, compulsively jacking stabs, and an irresistibly rolling bassline being joined by Kameelah Waheed’s earworm spoken-word vocals, turning it into a fast-paced and hypnotic house anthem, as is to be expected from the hotly in-demand London based DJ/producer. "I fell in love with Kameelah’s poetic vocals as soon as I’ve heard them,” says Hilit. “‘Why We Dance’ is why we live - now more than ever."

Following her remix of Terry Farley & Wade Teo’s ‘Why We Dance’, Hilit steps up to the Rekids plate with her debut EP for Radio Slave’s label with her single ‘Hot Mess’. A relentlessly driving drum machine werqout, ‘Hot Mess’ sees her masterfully mixing compulsive, marching rhythms with a fiercely impassioned spoken word vocal. 

With added raw jackin’ energy in the ‘Even Hotter Mix’, this has the kind of late night runway energy that demands the Sound Factory be rebuilt. On the B-side, Chicago house legend Mike Dunn’s remix of ‘Hot Mess’ is a deep groove that adds a wriggling earworm bassline, while still embracing the enchanting vocal of the original. 

Hilit Kolet has been an integral part of London’s house scene ever since she started slinging vinyl at Soho’s legendary Black Market Records. Her distinctive, energetic DJ style then established her behind the decks everywhere, from high fashion shows to some of the most celebrated underground clubs in London. 2023 saw Hilit going global with shows from Ibiza to Shanghai via Printworks, Warehouse Project and Ministry of Sound.

Her summer single on the Faith imprint ‘POV Siren’ has been embraced by DJs as diverse as Robert Hood and Paul Woolford, and her edit of Laurent Garnier’s ‘Crispy Bacon’ was rinsed by many from Carl Cox to Patrick Topping, before seeing an official release by Garnier himself. ‘Hot Mess’ sets Hilit Kolet up as a serious name to watch out for in 2024.

Toronto’s Greg Gow kicks off 2024 for Rekids Special Projects.

Greg Gow’s ‘Soul Seek’ EP on Rekids Special Projects launches with ‘35 Fathoms’, a restrained house-meets-techno cut in which he imbues the machines with real funk and soul. As one of the biggest names in techno to come out of Canada, the Tronic, Planet-E, and SCI+TEC artist once again delivers a classy techno offering worthy of Radio Slave’s celebrated Rekids offshoot.

‘Soul Seek’ sees Gow channel both Detroit and the early Toronto rave scene, with the title track boasting chunky drums and silky smooth dub chords which drone stylishly under its steady top-end. ‘SleepingProphet’ then continues with slick grooves and dreamy synth work before dancefloor anthem ‘Pocket Lighter’ closes affairs with Greg Gow calling in an iconic vocal, rich melody and chugging, shaking drums.

Melbourne’s William Kiss debuts on Rekids Special Projects with ‘Clap For Me’ EP.

William Kiss’ ‘Clap For Me’ EP on Rekids Special Projects opens with a tom-fuelled groove in its title track, a booty-shaking rhythm intermittently broken up by a repeating ‘Clap For Me’ vocal, setting the tone for a party-starting release. The UNCAGE, Club Bad and 23rd Century artist drops ‘Jacker’ next, harkening back to old-school drum machine funk and invoking pure dance ﬂoor mania through its hypnotism and retro vocal.

‘Werkin’' then sees William Kiss keep the pace through more vocal-driven sampling melded with punchy 909’s, before ‘Talkin’’ continues with full-on house euphoria designed to turn heads. The Melbourne producer then closes things out with ‘Cherry’, which, compared to the preceding tracks, goes down a more classic rolling techno route, showcasing the versatility of an artist who knows the dance through and through.

Mark Broom returns to Rekids with the ‘Showtime’ EP. 

Mark Broom’s return to Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint takes in four tracks that showcase the UK techno legend’s sample-twisting style of house and techno. With a slew of EPs, LPs and remixes for Rekids and sister label RSPSX in recent years, Broom is one of the label’s core roster and most in-demand artists. 

Tough drums meet soulful, recognisable strings in ‘Klashjamz’, a real blast to the past chopped up in creatively funky ways. The title track ‘Showtime’ is next, its groove skipping and stuttering before breaking out into jazzy electro swing done right. 

On the flip, broom brings in ‘HIGHNRG’, a percussive, peak-time treat that expertly does what it says on the tin via a pulsating, rolling bassline accompanied by hypnotic vocals and infectious rhythm. ‘Jazz Ting’ then closes Mark Broom’s ‘Showtime’ EP, a hyped-up number with an earworm, classic & classy melody. 

Techno, house, hardgroove and rave, Mark Broom is one of UK dance music’s legends and has a myriad of production credits to his name dating back to 1989. Warp, M-Plant, Hardgroove, and his own Pure Plastic and Beardman imprints are just a handful of the labels he’s worked with, while studio collaborations with the likes of Baby Ford and James Ruskin have cemented his reputation as a storied and vital part of electronic music culture.
