BJ Leo is a sonic artist, producer and composer from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) currently based in Te Whanganui ā Tara (Wellington). He is a recent graduate of the sonic arts programme at Te Kōkī – NZ School of Music and has previously released works on labels Finest Ego (DE) and Strange Behaviour (NZ). In 2022, he was awarded the Susan Rhind prize and has recently exhibited works at Adam Gallery and the Australasia Computer Music Conference. He was recently announced as the 2023 Toi Pōneke Sound Artist in Residence for a new exhibition Breathwork, due in 2024.
 
Mutuals marks the first release of BJ Leo’s recent work exploring club and ambient genres through new techniques in spectral fission and ambisonic spatialisation. Drawing from Albert Bregman’s work on sonic fission and the Spectralism movement of the 1970s, the EP deconstructs and reconstructs breaks, samples and digital synthesis to reimagine their spectral qualities. Mutuals reinterprets these sonic fragments in three-dimensional sound using ambisonic spatialisation. The result is a new spectral interpretation of some of the core sonorities of electronic music.

Cusoon dj is the moniker of Andriy Kostyukov (otherwise known as @andriy_k), who is a Kyiv-born and Prague-based producer and dj. Andriy skillfully combines experimental club music with a deep listening downtempo specter of sound. Andriy has shared stages with: Upsammy, M.E.S.H., Evita Manji, Interplanetary Criminal, Exael, Neu Verboten, Maoupa Mazzochetti,Katarina Gryvul, Diana Azzuz, Jay Glass Dubs, Oliver Torr, Granul & Ursula Sereghy. He is a co-organizer of the Motsion — one of the first musical events that began charitable activities in Kyiv after the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. 

In productions, Andriy has established a strong musical position between tripped-out techno and brain-dance bass music. Through his new moniker ‘cusoon dj’, he draws from previous releases as Andriy K on the Odessa label 'System' with the EP 'Regression Authistics’, and ‘Shelest Dub’ on the Portuguese label 'Surf' - sustaining his main sound concepts through glitchy rhythmic abstraction, while exploring club experimentation, more dynamic structures and psychedelic sound design.

Reflecting a creative evolution of over a decade, honed through the fundamental parties, labels and record shops of the 2010s. The UK-raised, Barcelona based artist: EYRA (@eyra-dj), has cultivated a genre-fluid style that plugs sound system pressure into worldly rhythms, pulsating house and mutant dancehall. His diverse record crates are forward thinking, adventurous and inventive throughout, giving EYRA’s sets an edge that is quickly becoming a signature aesthetic.

His catalog includes releases on Accidental Meetings, Related Articles, Pressure Dome and more. With further music slated for release at the end of 2024, EYRA’s productions are set to become a staple of many DJ’s collections. He is co-founder of the event series POLYGLOT and member of musical collective ABUNDANCE.

Very much a part of the current Latin-American born and influenced wave of DJs and producers breaking through and dominating the underground airwaves – from Nick Leon to INVT and Bitter Babe to Siu Mata – Porto-via-Belo Horizonte DJ and Yellow Island Records (releases from Kessler, Boulderhead) label head ALBIN (@albindj) is highlighting Brazilian community through his blend of Baile Funk, Miami-Bass, forward-thinking Techno and underground UK Dubstep, Breaks & Jungle; channeling the spirits of both South America and the UK and finding a sweet spot between the bounce, bass and energy of each continent's aesthetics.

Previously supported by Ransom Note, NYC collective HAUS of ALTR, Craigie Knowes, Rinse FM, Mixmag and Groove Magazin, ALBIN held down a residency at Balamii Radio under his Yellow Island Records label between 2020 and 2022, inviting more than sixty guests from around the globe to connect with the deep-yet-dutty Yellow Island aesthetic, sharing the decks with Amelia Holt, Zopelar, John Beltran, Andrea (Ilian Tape), Glenn Astro, label-resident Etari and more, in addition to a residency at Internet Public Radio where he invited Soela, Paul P (Of Paradise), BADSISTA and more for guest slots.

Sequentia (@sequentia666) is a DJ and facilitator based in Tāmaki Makaurau, drawing influence from the bass-heavy culture of their Ōtautahi roots and their earlier experimental / improvisational projects. Sequentia has shared stages with the likes of Mechatok, Tim Reaper, Moktar, Mike Q, Loefah and James K. They host a monthly radio show on @95bfm called ‘Soundbleed’, and in 2020 they founded @relatedarticles - which functions as a monthly broadcast, a club night and a record label “at the forefront of releasing some of the most forward-thinking electronic music in the country” [Flying Nun]. In 2019 they co-established the biennial 3-day experimental music event 'Outlier Festival', a multi-modal project platforming new electronic music from Aotearoa’s experimental and exploratory practitioners.

Diesel (@diesel_wav) is a DJ Artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau and one of the co-creators of NYMPHO, an underground queer club night dedicated to the liberation of body and sound. Armed with a carefully curated selection, Diesel blends club music into electrifying, high-energy electronic sets to unlock hips and shed skins across the dance-floors of Aotearoa.

WAEWAEXPRESS is the moniker of DJ and Sound enthusiast Waitaiki Meihana. (Poutini Ngāi Tahu ki Ōtautahi) Raised between Arahura and Ōtautahi, Waitaiki grew up on an eclectic mix of Waiata Māori, Hip-Hop, RnB, electronic music and rave culture. 

Inspired by these beginnings, WAEWAEXPRRESS played her first show at the end of 2022 for Social Sport's Organic Chemistry EP Release party. With gigs under her belt at some of the country's most popular venues and festivals, Waitaiki is fast moving into the spotlight.

A long-time lover of 90s rave music, Jungle, Techno, Trance, Garage and DnB, Waitaiki is a versatile artist, finding new inspiration in the Queer Techno scene and Ballroom Community here in Aotearoa.

Cupid (@cupidx99) is an emerging electronic DJ from Tāmaki Makaurau, known for evolving genre-bending eclectic rhythms. Peso Noto - a versatile and rhythmic club weapon that sways seamlessly in between footwork and dancehall patterns, a perfect track for jumping between genres and tempos whilst keeping the energy high and the crowd locked in.

Weit delivers a sprawling and chuggy dancehall mutation with hints of grime influence dropped in for good measure. Laidback, swaggering grooves make ample space for the fidgeting percussion to dance on top, while a gliding grime lead seeps through the cracks.

PREMIERE⚡️EYRA - Weit [Related Articles]

This mix is a 1-for-1 showdown of productions between Murk1 and Shli. Moving through bass, grime and experimental styles throughout the full hour.


Steadily releasing works over recent years through local labels like Echo Train and the Big Fresh Collective, Shli’s (@1shli) productions stitch together infectious rhythms layered over low-end pressure. His sets drawing influence from across the hardcore continuum and beyond, creating dancefloor moments from trippy rhythmic states to unleashing sheer bass weight deluges. 

MURK1/M1 (@kls-wun) established himself in late 2019 through his sets and grime influenced productions. With his works being supported and played on stations such as Rinse FM, SWU and many more. 2024 saw him  release his productions on French label, French Tabloïd. Focusing on the future, his sound has developed to be more interpretive of the dark and percussive side of techno, fusing his love with grime into rhythm driven sub-heavy sounds.

@fra-ciaic is an Italian DJ based in Paris. An insatiable digger for dance music’s murkiest depths, he draws inspiration from bass-heavy sounds, dub, and hypnotic rhythms to open a gateway for his imagination.

@joanna-oj mutates and transmutes into the sound planets she is fluttering, to create wildly indelible sets. she sows intrigue, from dream to drama, between aerial bubbles, elusive pulsations and seismic bursts. frenetic bass, syncopated breaks, minimal dub, weirdos idm, experimental, futuristic and endless unspeakable sounds, she crunches genres and pieces the whole together with syncretic taste; the result is a sensualizing surprise that explodes in the mouth, blows up the synapses and definitely make your articulations move or high your brain.

RA MIX 057: Joanna OJ b2b CIAIC - hollow of the Gallium Dance

In this mix, Nymphloads (@nymphloads) explores a suite of their favourite vapor- and sci-fi-inspired footwork joints, mixing them with tracks from local footmahi experts and legends of the genre. The result is a journey through a galaxy of wormholes, cute death robots, trans-dimensional beings and strange purple planets. The mix heavily features Acetantina and Young Smoke, who approach the sound from a uniquely whimsical and imaginative place. 

NymphLoads is a Pōneke-based DJ, scientist, and founding member of local collective Sigil Sound. They’re known for their wide spectrum of music they play, and oftentimes their love for chaos and calamity. From amapiano alongside Sister Zo, to brazilian hardstyle with the Warpath crew, U never know what the nymph will load next.

RA MIX 058: Nymphloads - Journey Thru Tha Nebula

Sequentia (@sequentia666) is a DJ and promoter of Ngāti Mutunga and Moriori descent based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Drawing influence from the bass-heavy culture of their Ōtautahi roots and their earlier experimental / improvisational projects, Sequentia has shared stages with the likes of Mechatok, Tim Reaper, Moktar, Mike Q, Loefah, Isabella Lovestory and James K. 
They host a monthly radio show on @95bfm called ‘Soundbleed’, and in 2020 they founded @relatedarticles - which functions as a monthly broadcast, a club night and a record label “at the forefront of releasing some of the most forward-thinking electronic music in the country” [Flying Nun]. In 2019 they co-established the biennial 3-day experimental music event Outlier Festival, a multi-modal project platforming new electronic music from Aotearoa’s experimental and exploratory practitioners. 
Sequentia’s eclectic and boundary-defying sets have seen them perform internationally and across festivals in Aotearoa, traversing elements of downtempo, ambient, leftfield techno and global club music, jungle and more - with an emphasis on drawing connections across genres and careful curation which echos the environment. This mix is a live recording of their opening set for Isabella Lovestory at @nymphoworld in Tāmaki Makaurau [22.02.25]

Never limited by genre or tempo, Lakeboon’s (@lakeboon) releases with Teeth Clippers, Glitz Club and Ōtautahi's own, Big Fresh Collective, showcase a variety of electronic influences. He’s the core founder of Insession; a platform for emerging talent in Pōneke - championing diverse and inclusive dancefloor spaces, much like his performances, holding manaakitanga for all to enjoy.
