Power in the right hands can lead to human flourishing. Power in the wrong hands brings human pain. How does Jesus orchestrate power and authority under himself within his people, within his kingdom? We want to be a people that can say to outsiders, "Come see a kingdom unlike any you've ever experienced!" Let God be your praise, not power.

His ultimate provision is restoration back to him through the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ, the jubilee bringer of rest.

You can sleep! The two psalms 3 and 4 put us to bed and wake us up in the morning with the reminders that God is in control. What a picture, this daily need for sleep, of the greatest offering we have, rest in Jesus Christ! So how do we rest, even sleep, in stressful and overwhelming times? Jesus is king. When he said, in Luke 19, that he had need of a donkey colt for riding into Jerusalem, he knew he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was claiming Messiahship and Kingship, and that he was coming to die...and rise. So about that colt, he said, "The Lord has need of it." He had plans for it--good, saving plans--and he has plans for us in this new year. In 2025, of our souls, our lives, our hopes, our possessions, our health, if we should hear, "The Lord has need of it," will we turn over to him what we have stewarded for him?

It's hard to wait. It's hard to be in suspense. It's hard to await the arrival of hard times on the way. In Luke 21:5-36, Jesus removes the faith we put into our security blankets and repositions it onto himself. Hard times are coming, he said during his Olivet Discourse, but he will be with us. When we are tempted to fear, let's focus on Jesus.

Whenever we make false plans for Jesus, our own plans for salvation, we find only heartsickness. The Emmaus Road conversation in Luke 24 highlights the centrality of Jesus and the importance of abandoning our own plans about what Jesus should mean. We must believe the Bible, exchanging our plans for God's own plans. Christian nationalism and moralism sound good until we analyze the way they leave out Christ. Jesus confronted these well-meaning misperceptions on the Emmaus Road and then showed us the way we could really truly know him, through embracing his suffering and the suffering of the crosses we bear for him. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

If Jesus really did rise from the dead, then anything he tells us to do is possible. We bask in certain awesome realities when we read Luke 24:33-53. Jesus gives a thrilling purpose to our lives, to go to the world and tell them the good news about our powerful, wise, loving, risen, promised, ascendant Lord and Savior. By repentance and faith, anyone can find forgiveness and restoration through Jesus! By the power of the Holy Spirit, anyone can share this good news! Let's go!

In Luke 24:46-47, Jesus defines the gospel: preach repentance for forgiveness of sins in his name. Faith ("in his name") and repentance lead to eternal forgiveness. God loves saving. God is always saving. This "preaching" is the Christian's and each church's foremost, even sole, message. Are we who follow Jesus talking about lots of good things, creating a culture of perceived decency, but suppressing the main thing? Or are we talking about the gospel message and creating a gospel culture?

The work of Jesus continues from the gospel of Luke to the book called the Acts of the Apostles. In Acts 1:1-11, Luke wrote about the ascension of Jesus, a sign of power and promise. The four key themes of Acts are given: the Father's sovereignty, the Spirit's empowering, the Son's witness, the Triune God's kingdom. It's easy for us to freeze up thinking we are on our own, don't have what we need, wish we were already to our destination, but Jesus promises that he continues his work in us in this era. So let's trust him and get to work!

Many people want to make an impact, do good, and be used by God. But Acts 1 comes before Acts 2. Acts 2 is the chapter of power, impact, and results, while Acts 1 is a quieter chapter of gathering, waiting, obeying, and praying. But we see in Acts 1:12-26, that God was working in people before he was going to work through them. That pattern runs throughout the Bible and the history of mankind, all the way to us. May God do his work in us first! May we open ourselves to God's powerful internal work inside of us!

We read about the early church's speaking in tongues in Acts 2. What is it? When was it used? How did God use it to advance his agenda? If you hear an invitation to believe the gospel, then it's not too late to turn to Jesus for salvation. That's what Peter explained in Acts 2:14-41 at Pentecost. Jesus isn't spiteful toward sinners, not the rebellious, the stubborn, the proud, even his own killers. If you have turned your life, marriage, career, or parenting to ashes, it's still not too late to turn to Jesus. Peter's listeners killed Jesus, but he arose and offered them eternal life if they would repent and follow him. Jesus fulfilled Scripture, left his tomb empty, and changed the lives of those who believe in him. Hearts may be granite, but the gospel of Jesus Christ is diamond. It's time to follow him!

Jesus launched his church in Acts 2:41-47. When the church begins, they showed the marks of baptism, attention to learning from the apostles about Jesus, and care for one another. Most of all, we read of a devotion to gather together as a loving response to God's love and grace. Jesus changes people!

Jesus gets our attention. In Acts 3, Jesus gathered attention through Peter and the healing of a lame man. How did he get your attention? He gathers attention in order to confront our sin with mercy. How does he use our lives to gather attention to his good news?

Do you pray for courage? The apostles did. In Acts 4, they found themselves unpopular with the power brokers, surrounded, pressured, threatened. So what did they do? They asked God for courage. They asked for the courage to continue to name Jesus as the one and only Savior for the whole world. In doing so, they taught us to pray for courage too.

What turns a beautiful act of charity into an ugly act before God? In Acts 4:32-5:11, two men are contrasted, Barnabas and Ananias. Both sell land. Both give financial gifts to the church intended for the benevolence ministry. But one is remembered with fondness while the other was struck down by God himself. Social status levels were being squashed by God. Social status seeking was being squashed by God. Only one status is available to us in God's new society: child of the King. We who believe in Jesus are no more or less than sinners redeemed by Jesus Christ by faith alone and now adopted as true sons and daughters of God. That's the identity of Barnabas, but Ananias wanted something else. Was the love of God not enough?

God built our Faith. God built Christianity. The point of Acts 5 is just that, that this whole thing is God's story. The corollary is exciting: We can be brave. Because God has the authority to build his Church, the people of his Church can be brave! We are helping people find God when we are exalting Jesus Christ. When we are sharing the gospel in a Christlike manner, not making the story about us but remembering that it is God's story, we are doing the work of God and can expect his support. We can be brave.
