We had dedicated our first Artist-Mix to Vybz Kartel, one of the most talented and controversial dancehall artists of the recent years. With the second mix, we had a focus on the upcoming singer-talents, the Rising Stars Chris Martin & Romain Virgo. The mix was featured in the current issue of the german RIDDIM magazine. With our third artist-mix we would like to present two of the most unique voices of Jamaica: Beres Hammond & Buju Banton. Although they are vocally as far apart as Hamburg and Kingston, there are hardly two artists that are such a perfect fit.

ARTIST BIO
Sanchez (born Kevin Anthony Jackson, 30 November 1964, Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican Reggae and dancehall singer. Jackson was given the nickname 'Sanchez' due to his football skills - a reference to South American player of that name. After working with several Kingston sound systems he began recording and had his first hit with "Lady In Red", recorded for producer Red Man. By 1988 he was one of Jamaica's most popular singers, and at his performance at Reggae Sunsplash that year he was called back for six encores. His 2000 album Simply Being Me hit #14 on the U.S. Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart, and 2002's Stays on My Mind hit #9.

Jah Cure 
Jah Cure, or Iyah Cure (born Siccature Alcock on 11 October 1978 in Hanover, Jamaica) is a Jamaican reggae musician, who was raised in Kingston. He was given the name Jah Cure by Capleton whom he met while growing up in Kingston.[citation needed] Jah Cure is also known as the King of Lovers Rock and Roots Reggae.

Born in Hanover, Jamaica, Siccaturie used to sneak out his bedroom window at night to visit local dancehalls and stage shows where he saw some of the great reggae icons perform: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffith, Garnett Silk, Jacob Miller and Black Uhuru. Early on he made the decision to become part of that elite group and dedicated his early years to making this his dream and sole mission.

Capleton was the one to bestow on Siccaturie the name Jah Cure. The symbolism was obvious - the singer looked young and healthy, well preserved as in “cured,” using the plants of the land for medicinal purposes. It was during this time that Cure became spiritually enlightened, learning the teachings of Rastafari and becoming a proponent of natural living.

Beres Hammond subsequently took Cure under his wing and began mentoring him and producing him in the studio. However, Cure’s studio education and musical journey would be suddenly and unexpectedly interrupted. His growing success took a radical turn when he was stopped and arrested late one night in Montego Bay. Cure was charged with four crimes, all of which he vehemently denied. He maintained his innocence throughout his arrest and subsequent incarceration. A non-jury trial convicted him based on one victim’s claim that although she could not visually identify him, he sounded like one of the perpetrators and on that basis he was sentenced to prison.

While in jail, Cure recorded and released several records which became # 1 singles, “Jamaica,” produced by DZ Productions and “Longing For,” produced by Don Corleon. Cure’s first album, FREE JAH’S CURE, was recorded and released approximately one year after he began his incarceration. It is a project that has been lyrically compared to Bob Marley’s EXODUS. On that album, Cure gives thanks for life, spreading love and forgiveness through his music. He believes his incarceration was Jah’s way of teaching him humility and love for his fellow man. He has since forgiven all those who judged him unjustly. While he was still in jail, Beres Hammond produced Cure’s second album, GHETTO LIFE, which featured the single “Divide and Rule”, a duet with Sizzla which was voted the best song of the year. VP Records compiled songs recorded during this period to release his third album, FREEDOM BLUES, which featured “King in This Jungle’, another collaboration with Sizzla and the heartfelt “Songs of Freedom”.

In November 1998, while driving around Montego Bay, Cure was pulled over by the police and arrested on charges of gun possession, robbery and rape. He was prosecuted before the Gun Court[1] in April 1999, found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison.[2] Cure was transferred from the St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre to the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, which had a digital recording studio the inmates could use. It was there that Cure released three albums and a number of singles, some of which have topped the Jamaican chart.[2] His first album Free Jah's Cure The Album the Truth was released in 2000, it was followed by Ghetto Life in 2003 and Freedom Blues in 2005. More recently Cure has released the songs "Love Is", "Longing For" and "True Reflections", showing his unique voice and lyrical ability.

He was released from jail on parole on 28 July 2007, after serving 8 years of the sentence. Three days later, his fourth album, True Reflections...A New Beginning was released.

Wayne Wonder (born Von Wayne Charles, 26 July 1972) is a Jamaican reggae fusion (specifically reggae/R&B) artist. While his early recordings were dancehall and reggae, he later moved towards hip hop and rap.[2]
Wonder was born in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica.[2] He sang in Sunday school as a child,[3] and began songwriting at the age of 13, getting a major career break when he was given a regular weekly slot at Metro Media in Allman Town.[2] He auditioned at Sonic Sounds studio, but while Sly Dunbar was impressed, his touring commitments with Black Uhuru prevented him from signing Wonder. He had more success, however, with King Tubby, who produced his first single, "Long and Lasting Love", in 1985, with two more following.[2][3] Wonder's career suffered a setback when Tubby was killed in 1988, and he recorded for several other record producers at Sonic Sound, enjoying a further hit with the Lloyd Dennis-produced "It's Over Now", leading to the release of his first album, No More Chance, although his success in this era was limited. His fortunes improved when he began working with Dave Kelly, a friend from primary school, who had become resident sound engineer at Penthouse Studios.[2][3] The partnership enjoyed a string of hits, starting with "Saddest Day", and they also worked on Wonder's second album, Part 2.[3] His 1990 live performance of Alphaville's "Forever Young" was recorded and later released to Alphaville fans in a limited, cassette-only album entitled History.[4] He toured the UK in 1992 along with other Penthouse stars Marcia Griffiths, Tony Rebel, and Buju Banton.[5] He also recorded "Bonafide Love (Movie Star)" with Buju Banton, and wrote several early hits for him, including the controversial "Boom Bye Bye".[2] He toured again with Banton in 1994 as part of the Penthouse Showcase.[5]

Wonder formed the band Alias along with Kelly, Baby Cham, Frisco Kid, and Frankie Sly, and later Entourage.[2]

In 2000, Wonder launched his own record label, Singso, and his 2000 album Da Vibe saw him begin to incorporate hip hop into his sound.[3] He collaborated with several other major artists, including Jason Dalyrimple of Soul for Real, Foxy Brown, and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and the move towards hip hop increased with his 2001 album Schizophrenic.[2][3]

His career really took off internationally when he signed to Atlantic Records, achieving worldwide success with the song "No Letting Go" in 2003. The song is based on the Diwali riddim, which was also used by several other artists that year, such as Sean Paul, Lumidee and Missy Elliott. The single reached No. 11 in the US[6] and No. 3 in the UK.[1]

"No Letting Go" and the album No Holding Back were a major success on urban radio stations in the US, and this prompted the release of several compilation albums featuring older Wonder material, including Trojan Records', Inna Bashment Style: The Roots Of An Urban Warrior (2005). A new album, Foreva was released in 2007.[2] It reached No. 6 on the US Top Reggae Albums chart.[7]

His album May Way was released in December 2012.[8] Sweet Songs is due to be released in 2014.[9]

In October 2014, he featured on Never Mind the Buzzcocks Identity parade, where he revealed he now tours selling Yams, joking "I've sold more Yams than records"

Emile Volel originaire de Jacmel n’avait que treize (13) ans quand pour la première fois il fut initié au micro dans la cité de l’indépendance, Gonaïves. A seize (16) ans il débute sa carrière professionnelle à l’hôtel Castelle D’Haïti et en 1962, il fit la pluie et le beau temps au ciné Capitol avec l’orchestre Riversailles dont Joe Laveau fut le premier chanteur. En 1963 il quitta Haïti accompagné de Raymond Sicot via Guadeloupe et a tout de suite continuer sa carrière de CHANTEUR dans les Antilles, en France aux USA, à Montréal. Il a su conquérir bien des cœurs avec son registre de prédilection, la musique qui attendrit (les mœurs et les esprits) à l'époque des "MAXEL'S" avec son complice scénique Jacques Bracmort. S'ensuivra une série de concerts aux cote de grosse pointures Haïtiennes, de nombreuses expériences scéniques ou en studio avec divers musiciens de la place et une connaissance approfondie de la guitare qui désormais l'accompagne à chacune de ses prestations). 
En 1968, après un séjour de cinq (5) ans en Martinique et Guadeloupe, il est allé rejoindre bon nombre de ses pairs compatriotes aux USA (à Washington plus précisément). A l'époque Emile Volel était un Stand up, un "simple chanteur" dans le jargon des musiciens, celui qui ne touche pas à un instrument. Le succès aidant, il s'est produit aux cotés de Jane Fonda et anime une campagne électorale du sénateur Mc Gowan, alors candidat démocrate aux présidentielles américaines. Fidèle à sa culture d'origine il a toujours joué du compas. Mais les boites des USA dans lesquelles il jouait ont leur loi : la samba, la bosa nova, la musique africaine et la biguine sont des passages obligés des nuits à Washington. Depuis lors, le chanteur qui se faisait accompagner est devenu un homme-orchestre. Il manie aussi bien la guitare que trois claviers et un compresseur de son. Il chante en ligala, en zulu, en italien, en espagnol, en français, en anglais, en portugais, hébreu et trois différents créoles. "Les langues, c'est comme la musique, j'aime les sciences aussi. J’apprends beaucoup tout seul. Ma maison c'est une vraie librairie”. Pendant plus de quinze (15) ans de vie aux états unis il a surtout fait de la musique américaine. 
Vingt (20) ans plus tard Emile Volel rejoint sa patrie chérie. Depuis 1985, il résida en Haïti. Ou il n'a pas pris congé de son passe-temps et comme on pourrait dire si bien "gagne-pain". Il a décroché de nombreux contrat avec les plus renommer hôtels et restaurants de la place à cette époque, comme l’hôtel El Rancho, l’hôtel Villa Créole qui a présent ne fait plus qu’un avec la NH El Rancho, Le Floreville hôtel et restaurant … etc. Les grandes familles, ou plutôt la classe bourgeoise ne pouvaient se passer de lui quand il s’agissait de grande réception. Il déclara: "je n'ai jamais fait autre chose de ma vie que de la musique”. De 1991 à 1998 Emile a enregistré sept (7) albums avec plusieurs maisons de disques.
Apres quelques temps, il est reparti pour la Martinique avec un enregistrement de trente-trois (33) tours regroupant des tangos, boléros, slows des temps anciens. Qui comprends plusieurs titre a succès comme : JE ME MEURS D'AMOUR, MA BRUNE, LE MAL DE TOI ... etc. Cet Album fut produit par Albert Defontis et enregistre en Guadeloupe au studio Crazy Sound. Son style avait dénoté quelque peu dans l'horizon compas-zouk. Et pourtant, avec son tout dernier disque "pourquoi" ressuscite avec succès un genre musical tout en douceur, qu'on croyait à tout jamais défunt. C'est l'amour qui est au centre de son inspiration. L'amour, il en faisait son affaire vocale. Avec son timbre grave et profond (d'aucuns diront communément, une voix qui vous prend aux tripes), il fredonnait ce sentiment éternel sur tous les tons et sur toutes ses facettes. Il était la voix des amours rieurs éteints, fugaces, durables, et passionnels. Il aimait à dire: "Je suis chanteur d'abord né en Haïti ensuite Je suis un chanteur du monde."
