This is the 11 hour archive of our 2025 New Year's marathon stream live from Lifeboat Aotearoa, conveniently broken into 11, one-hour files... and a bit extra. From the bleeding edge of the international date line and among the first globally to enter the new year, we made sure clear a path and rearrange the interior of the sonic bunker while the rest of the planet arrived over the ensuing hours. Behold live sounds, old sounds, listener-made sounds, music-a-plenty and a sparkling attitude for what will surely be a 'tranquil, smooth, easy-going, no-drama breeze' of a 2025. We even had various check-ins from our multiple virtual satellite outposts with our new Artificial Interns.  
*NOTE: If you listened live, what you heard was the result of an operator error (mine) / bad patch that didn't include the live output of the studio microphone in the outgoing mix. I start the year with a ridiculous face palm...ok, ok! The record deck however DID capture the entire mix including the plentiful babble, so listen to this for the fuller picture. Ugh... that patching flub explains why there was little feedback and input from the listening audience, despite me continuing to directly address the listenership. Oh well... This is a small collection of several different, distinctive vocal calls by various merchants in the handful of cities I've lived throughout China, including neighborhoods in Suzhou, Nanning, Urumqi, Kunming, Dali. These folks move through the residential streets and alleys calling out in their own individual ways services offered - cleaning, appliance repair, recycling, scrap collection, etc.

This was a show for Ub Radio / DFM created live by the Remote Operator (Fausto) from the s&S Radio studio.  This was a rolling, evolving, rather cinematic collage of original field and studio recordings and live sounds. Featured were layered original field recordings from our many years in China and more recently Aotearoa (New Zealand); bits and pieces from the studio; live processing and merrymaking. I was streaming a feed from NZ to the Ub radio folks in California who then added live a few periodic sounds on top and filled in with the intermission after the first hour. This unedited recording is only the output from my side, line-out from the studio mixer. Its rather dense and sonically packed to stimulate your mind's eye nonetheless. Enjoy!

This was a live-mixed transmission from the s&S studio to our friends at 'Radio is a Foreign Country'. Listeners were taken on a rolling sonic tour by way of field recorded sounds and music recorded primarily during our many years based in the peripheries of mainland China. Also included were elements, noises and music made in our erstwhile 'Bananahut Hideaway' studio in Dali, Yunnan, PRC.

We once again relayed large chunks of this year's Oscillation Festival live performances occurring in Brussels over the s&S radio stream which took place 1-4 May 2025. In the hours leading up to the Oscillation relay switchover on 2 May, we live-mixed our own 'unofficial' contribution in keeping with this year's theme: 'The Weather', direct from the s&S meteorological monitoring outpost, which we're sharing here for your enjoyment. We were coincidentally experiencing a rather heavy, turbulent storm while we were transmitting from here in Wellington, some of which you hear buried in the mix. Enjoy!

s&S Radio - Aethergrams - 2 May 2025 [live-mix]

During the winter of 2019-2020, I was the recordist on a small team project headed by Shi Tanding and had set out from our base in Dali, Yunnan, to document traditional Mongolian folk songs throughout the Inner Mongolia region of China. We traveled and recorded in the western peripheries and interior for 70 days until our project was truncated by the Covid-19 situation which ground the entire country to a screeching halt in late January and movement was no longer possible. By that point though, we had been recording for over 2 months, so here are some varied highlights we collected throughout this vast region. 
The squeaking animals you hear in one part are camels, numbering about 10,000 in this spot gathered for a sparsely attended camel festival & races in the desert. The ones closest to me were striking up casual conversation I guess.
Most music recordings were done in family homes, in living rooms, a couple in a shop, a classroom, and a few outdoors (it was the dead of winter and extremely cold!) Typically, we'd only get one chance to quickly enter a home, sit for a while and chat over milk tea and Mongolian cheese then set up a simple 1 to 3 mic arrangement and record some songs. With some cleanup, the recordings here mostly turned out decently I think, though there is one that I simply did not have the right equipment on hand to properly record a 4 piece band as well as I wished I could have. They kept switching positions on me as well.  Nonetheless, I think this collection makes for a rather enjoyable listen - I hope you agree!

Songs From Inner Mongolia - recordings by Fausto Caceres (1hr)

I recorded this in at the People's Park in Debao, Guangxi Province, China in 2017. One end of the park was filled with small separate groups of Zhuang minority men and women - each with about 6 members or so. They seemed to be 'passing' and overlapping verses of these songs around the area. One group would finish, and another, several meters away would start. It created this beautifully, soulful, rolling, roaming song. This is an excerpt of a much longer recording.

This is a short excerpt from a 40 minute recording done under weather in a field surrounded by karst mountains in the village of DeXin in Guangxi in 2017..

I  recorded this in 2003 in the town of Aksu in Xinjiang featuring a local style particular to that area with each woman strumming a dutar with one hand and tapping a dap with the other.

I recorded this in the village of Karkax which lies within Hotan county in southern Xinjiang. 9 elderly men all playing large frame drums (dap) and performing an intense half hour of this type of bakhsi ritual music the likes of which I'd not heard elsewhere.

I arrived in Auckland, New Zealand a few days before Christmas, so had to spend the holidays in mandatory Managed Isolation & Quarantine (MIQ) for 14 days. I brought my gear to assemble a little radio station in the hotel room that I was bound to both make, play and mix some sounds. This is just under 7 hours of my New Years LIVE streaming to celebrate the arrival of 2021 alone in the room with any and all who decided to tune in.
