Everything was done within Renoise - in fact, I used this challenge to explore some of the newest features in the latest beta. I pulled 3 samples from the original recording. 
1) The sustained drone is a ping-pong loop of one of the knives being sharpened played 4 octaves lower than recorded, then mangled with a multitap delay, flanger, two different reverbs, and some filtering/EQ. A ring modulator with an LFO animating its frequency setting provides the pulsing effect that speeds up and slows down, with another LFO controlling the volume so it fades in and out.  
2) The faint thunking and rumbling comes from the second sample, which is a loop of the knife sharpener alone (not grinding anything) played 4 octaves lower than recorded and treated with reverb and delay.  An LFO drives a bandpass filter’s center frequency up/down, which makes this sound alternate from a low rumble to the thunking sound.  
3) The occasional rattlesnake-type sound is from the third sample, which is when the knife is dramatically deflected off the sharpener and makes that great metallic resonance.  This sound is treated with a high-pass filter (to minimize the sound of the sharpener), EQ, reverb, and delay.  It is played either 2 or 3 octaves lower than recorded, and sometimes played backwards.  This sound is triggered by the new “Maybe” command, which plays one of those permutations based upon a probability factor…so the end result will be unique each time I play/render the track.

Work in progress, tracked in Renoise.  This is an excerpt, as the current track clocks in at a little over 28 minutes.  The final version (which may or may not be shorter) should be included in a release I have planned for 2015.

I cut the original field recording up into 6 different "pluck" sounds, a "scratch" sound, and made a loop of one of the whirling sounds for the melody.  This song was tracked in Renoise.  With the percussive focus, I felt like going old-skool tracker style and further restricted myself from using any VST effects, Paulstretch, or even the bulit-in DSP effects (though I did use a couple filters and compression).  As such, the end result isn't what I personally consider "ambient"...but it was a fun exercise.

This live performance was recorded by Charles Shriner at the Irving Theater during the Midwest Electro-Music Experience August 12, 2016 in Indianapolis, IN.

This solo set was performed with a MacBook Pro running Renoise as the DAW, controlled via iPad running MIDI Designer Pro.

At last!  My first solo LP release is now available.  Accumulator is a collection of ambient/drone/experimental tracks assembled from 2014 to 2016.  

All songs were fully tracked and mixed in Renoise (www.renoise.com), using only the built-in DSPs for effects and parameter automation.

This is my rework of 'Tarwestraat 52', the centerpiece to Drekka's on-going trilogy of albums for Dais Records, solely using the provided source recording of a piano.  I chopped it up, re-sequenced some bits, and created numerous loops in Renoise.

This is from the split 7" with Drekka, who reworked 'Lissajous' from my 'Accumulator' album.  Preorders for the 7" are available now, with the release set for 4 May 2018.  (Digital downloads are included.)

This is the "studio version" of my 2017 live set.  It uses a blend of my own field recordings with a selection of soft synths and texture loops, tracked and manipulated in Renoise.

The title comes from "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows" by John Koenig, which defines Chrysalism as the amniotic tranquility of being indoors during a thunderstorm, listening to waves of rain pattering against the roof like an argument upstairs, whose muffled words are unintelligible but whose crackling release of built-up tension you understand perfectly.

My goal was to create the soundtrack for such an experience.

Chrysalism v2

Software engineer by trade, I like to play around with sounds as a hobby in whatever spare time I can steal.  This has been an on-again/off-again affair for me since my college days (early '90s) with my Amiga 500.  Over time, I have used a number of tracker programs to do this.  My current weapon of choice is Renoise.
