Born and raised in Rome, with German DNA and a diverse musical palette Ae:ther is an artist who has quickly established his pedigree as a formidable producer and selector through scintillating DJ sets and a batch of stunning releases. Now based in Berlin, the 29-year-old has returned to the motherland where he is steadily cultivating a reputation for haunting melodies and narcotic rhythms. With strong connections to Damian Lazarus at Crosstown Rebels and the Afterlife crew, Ae:ther has considerable industry support with his focus on delivering high quality dance floor ready cuts that channel his love for ambient electronica and transmitting deep emotion, while keeping the energy levels high. Ae:ther discovered club music early in his life, inspired by Underground Resistance and the early Detroit sound, along with artists like Autechre, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream and Miles Davis - pioneers who pushed boundaries. As producing and DJing became a daily obsession, he left Rome to go and study in Milan. It was there, at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) that he studied Sound Design and his lifelong commitment to the exploration of sound and vibration really took hold.

From there he moved to London, a city where he matured and grew as an artist. After a couple of years he found a space at Fortress Studios in Old Street, where he befriended neighbours such as Bicep and assisted other artists with their music, his knowledge of sound design giving him the ability to add a whole other dimension to the artists he worked with. Six years in London gave Ae:ther all the experience he needed of life in a city that many consider to be the centre of the musical universe. In 2017, enticed by the prospect of expanding his network and pushing his career forwards Ae:ther moved to Berlin. There he joined like-minded collaborators Mind Against and Tale Of Us, alongside a whole crew of new friends, and immersed himself in the highly fertile electronic music scene. The Berlin lifestyle; liberal, inclusive and supportive of the arts, has fed back into Ae:ther’s love for production, and taken him to a whole new level of musical expression. 

As a producer he has been blazing a trail, his natural aptitude for crafting emotive, captivating compositions landing him several releases with Afterlife, including his exceptional EP ‘Spectre’, which was released in July 2018. Ae:ther’s love for experimental, ambient music lies at the core of his distinct sound. Coupled with deep underground influences and a meditative atmosphere, he programs taut percussion and juxtaposes it with dreamlike soundscapes, telling mesmerising stories with his synths. This inimitable approach has brought him to the attention of one of the scene’s most influential figures, Damian Lazarus. He has commissioned Ae:ther to compose a remix of his exceptional single ‘All I Need’ with the Ancient Moons, released Ae:ther’s ‘Stardancer EP’ on Crosstown Rebels, and has also signed his debut album ‘Me’. Besides that, Ae:ther has unleashed his debut live set at select clubs and festivals, including performances at Get Lost Miami, Tomorrowland, Audioriver Festival, Day Zero, Afterlife and Sandbox Festival.

More than anything, WhoMadeWho are a band channeling a singular energy. From their live performances to their songwriting to their DJ sets and beyond, they’re a restless, constantly evolving entity with a diverse range of critically acclaimed releases on a varied succession of labels like Gomma, Get Physical and Kompakt. 

Quite a few music journalists have tried to label and pigeonhole WhoMadeWho over the years and most have missed the transformative mark. And while the notion that great music always defies categorization is often a hackneyed cliché, in this particular case, it’s actually completely and utterly true. On the face of it, ‘experimental dance band’ might make a fitting description. But walk into one their full-on live assaults, and you’ll quickly realize that having your ears penetrated by the ‘two-headed vocal monster’ that is Tomas and Jeppe with Tomas on drums is a mind-altering experience that’s less about genres and all about vibe. 

And the WhoMadeWho vibe is a powerful, yet elusive beast. Among other things, it’s forming as an experimental side project and suddenly realizing you’re playing sold-out shows in the world’s most respected venues; it’s a heady journey in the rock and roll-meets-electronic music tradition that’s seen them play everywhere from Melt Festival and Sonar to Roskilde and the legendary Robot Heart parties; it’s having your sound remixed by the globe’s discerning dance music mafia with heavyweights like Tale Of Us, Hot Chip and Maceo Plex stepping up and rising to the occasion; it’s running the cultural gamut from pop to techno to indie, hinting at new genres along the way; it’s being an insider-band that all the greats band are fanning out over; and it’s touring non-stop together for 10 years, lighting dance floors on fire in all corners and capitals, while still finding a way to sound preposterously fresh – like they just formed yesterday, all hopped up on new, creative energy. This might have something to do with the fact that Tomas, Jeppe and Tomas actually like each other. Unlike a lot of other bands, the pressures of touring hasn’t killed their enthusiasm. Quite the opposite. In the words of Høffding: “We still really like and respect each other. There’s a lot of energy in the room when we’re together. We basically have great chemistry, and most nights these two lunatics would be my first call party-mates.” That energy is central to WhoMadeWho’s creativity. Moreover, that energy and the interaction with their audience is the potent combination that fuels their legendary live performances, as Kjellberg confirms: “We seriously need the interaction with our audience in our life!”

WhoMadeWho are that rare thing, a band with their own sound. It sounds as if they won’t cool off or settle down anytime soon.
