The Engegård Quartet made their first appearance at the 2006 Lofoten International Music Festival. Inspired by the midnight sun, their musical landscape ranges from glowing core energy to the gentle lyrical sound of Norwegian nature. Edvard Grieg and Leif Solberg are natural choices for this Scandinavian quartet, complimented by the music of Joseph Haydn reflected in a Nordic atmosphere. The strong musical nerve is emphasized by an intense sound production by Lindberg Lyd.

When composing Mass of the Eternal Flame, my first Mass, I kept remembering my parish choir in Latvia, which I directed for ten years. Whatever songs of praise and worship, repentance or thanksgiving we sang, the vivid experience and understanding of the text by each singer was always prominent. In this way, my Mass was born. It is inspiring for me to know that in Houston, Texas there is also a choir with faith in God in their hearts and a true passion for expressing the Good News through music, as well as conductor Robert Simpson and organist, Daryl Robinson, whose musicianship has inspired many over the years. My sincere gratitude to them for encouraging me to write my first Mass!

Final mix (for now). Every note in the score is reproduced here. Over 30 polyphonic voices. Over 4,800 notes (less than 10% of the complexity of the Mars movement). The slower tempo makes this piece 50% longer than the Mars movement.

Finally I picked up the courage to try this piece! This is a legendary piece that almost everyone knows. I think this is the only classical piece that the entire universe knows thanks to cars reversing and water dispensers everywhere :P .

Für Elise or (For Elise) was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Of course everyone knows Beethoven since he is the genius who composed and played even after he lost his hearing! This is only possible when the great could visualize the piece completely in his mind and is such a perfect virtuoso pianist, that he can mimic the sounds in the mind in reality without needing a feedback! What I feel is the biggest plus for Beethoven is that his pieces are very easily reachable by common folk. Compared to other classical giants like Bach, Choppin whos pieces arent easily appreciated, Beethoven’s style and elegance is easy appreciated by musicians and others alike.

The piece itself is a testimony for what I’ve mentioned above. Its based on A minor, with simple arpeggios on the left hand while the right plays the melody. Its such a simple piece that most people feel that its not even worth playing in a recital! But the piece has such an amazing level of expressiveness. This is a piece that can be played beautifully by one person while the other person can make it feel bland while playing the same notes. The piece also has three distinct stages, one is the recurring theme, that everyone is familiar. In between the recurring theme are two stanzas, that have very different moods. The first stanza is a very curious and very mischievous one. The second one is a stanza that emphasizes anger, and the cools down back to the recurring soft theme.

For me, this piece is one of the best compositions ever. I have to thank Valentina Lisitsa for her version of the piece which is what inspired me to try this in the first place. I hope I’ve done a reasonable amount of justice to this masterpiece and I hope you guys like it.

[Update] Made a better version on 23rd June after a lot of feedback that my tempo was waaaaay off. So I’ve slowed the piece down a little more and increased the pace of the faster sections! I’ll make a overall faster version a little later after more practice :)

The Renaissance Singers is London’s leading amateur chamber choir specialising in European sacred music of the 15th-17th centuries.

The Renaissance Singers was founded in 1944 by Michael Howard as the performing arm of the Renaissance Society, and led the revival of interest in Renaissance sacred polyphony-the beginnings of the "early music movement". Their first concert was on 3rd June 1944 in St Marylebone Parish Church. The Singers made many recordings and broadcast regularly-the first broadcast being on Christmas Day 1945. They often sang from hand-written and -copied parts produced by scholars such as Bruno Turner-now one of the choir's vice-presidents.

In 1992, after a gap of some ten years, the Singers were re-formed by Michael Procter as a chamber choir specialising in this repertoire. In recent years their activities have included performances at festivals in Warwick, Bath and Southwark and tours in France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. These engagements, and their annual programme of concerts and workshops in central London and Oxford have earned the Renaissance Singers the reputation of being one of the best specialist amateur choirs in the country. Edward Wickham took the reins in 1995, and was followed by JanJoost van Elburg in 2005. David Allinson was appointed as the choir’s new Musical Director in 2009.

We perform music by well-known great composers of the period including Josquin, Tallis, Byrd, Lassus, Palestrina and Victoria as well as giving rare airings to gems by lesser-known musicians. 

We have a varied annual programme giving around five concerts a year, mainly in London, and undertake occasional overseas tours and exchange projects with foreign choirs. 
The choir also hosts three workshops a year, open to all, where we explore Renaissance repertoire under expert direction.
