I straighten my tie, it’s my turn to stand.
I head up the stage, I raise my right hand. 
On this day I’ve awaited for years,
I’m fighting to hold back the tears,
though it’s soured recounting each word
I’ve heard people say.
Coward, deserter, denouncing your home,
the country that made you who you are today. 
Aren’t you proud?, they ask.
Aren't you proud? 
 
It’s your morning routine:
you’re just barely awake
and the news from the side of the world you were born 
is just too much to take.
And you’re asked through the day
by each well-meaning friend,
and finding the news from back home is becoming 
too much to defend.
So you’re trying to block it all out but the noise 
of the nonsense is far too loud.
Can one really be proud?
it Is hard to be proud

when a promise is cheap,
when a word has no weight,
when a life has no worth in the face of frustration 
and anger and hate,
when the facts are obscure 
and the thieves uncontrite
as the powerful prey on a populace grasping 
at glimmers of light
in a place where forgetting the sins of the past 
and rewriting the truth are allowed,
tell me how to be proud.
It is hard to be proud. 

Call me ungrateful.
Call me unkind.
Call me a traitor.
Try to change my mind.
Show me our history and art, our laughter and warmth, 
our landscapes and oceans,
then show me that pride in our country is more 
than romantic, rhetorical notions.

is it anything more?
