Metalheadz rounds off an incredibly successful year with an EP from core label producer Mikal, who also brings some friends along for the ride.  

META013 is a project that shows the versatility of Mikal. His take on the Headz sound includes steam train steppers, halftime dancehall grooves and classic reinforced era jungle. The EP is an expansive project that includes collaborations with Break and Nymfo, from South Country UK across to Holland.

The dancehall and dub parts of Mikal’s armoury are strongly on display here - his contribution to the long lineage of dancehall influenced drum n bass is a confident- take no prisoners attitude,  typical Metalheadz.

The package is broken down as a four track vinyl EP, with an exclusive digital only fifth track. There is also an accompanying video for the lead track. 

The EP is five tracks worth of intent and is the tip of the iceberg for Mikal’s future in terms of sound and presence on the label and we keenly await his next outing.

Stoner, Dottor, Poison and Ethik are members of the Italian “Drum & Bass Attack” crew and have all previously
released tracks on Delta9 Recordings: in particular, the single Dexcell / Soma caught the attention of some
well-known names in the scene and was played by Misanthrop.
The new single Wireless Brain / Plaster shows the continuous evolution of the artists, always pushing their skills
to produce cutting edge, futuristic beats.
Wireless Brain starts smoothly and melodic, gradually building up to the main lead which dominates the tune
with a robotic, rhythmic soul. As the track proceeds, the listener will start to feel hypnotised by the
continuously evolving, obsessive, techy roller: a good mixture of neurofunk elements and techstep synths.
The second track has a different perspective, being more minimalistic and deeper than Wireless Brain: both
tunes share a dancefloor attitude but Plaster is focused on the experimentation of different textures. The
whole drop is composed of glitches and harsh noises which are glued together by a heavy sub that enhance
the spectrum of the track, giving a full resonant body to it.

Viper’s newest and most mysterious signing, Giganti is once again making waves with the label’s first single release of the decade. While his identity remains a mystery, one thing that IS for certain is that Giganti is a force to be reckoned with. 2019 saw the release of a slew of heavyweight singles including ‘Face Off’, ‘Peacock Strut’, and ‘Big Cohones’, before ending the year on a high note with his highly sought after bootleg of Kanye West & Chris Martin’s ‘Homecoming’.
Keeping the mystery intact, Giganti returns to Viper with ‘Danger Mouse’ a track taken from his forthcoming Cosa Nostra EP. A thematically mysterious opening sets a foreboding tone for the track, playing off the producer’s alleged mafia ties with cinematic flair. While the intro successfully builds suspense, the track stands out for it’s drop in signature Giganti fashion. Bouncy, loud, and bass-heavy, Giganti makes music destined for the dancefloor, and this latest release is no exception.

Viper have always prided themselves on unearthing fresh, new talent, shining a spotlight on those who deserve it in such a saturated market. There’s no denying Futurebound’s impeccable ear, and so it should come as no surprise that Giganti is set to be the next big thing in drum & bass if the label’s track record is to be any indication. The valley was a lush place, with flora and fauna of all types contained between its mountainous peaks. This way it had been for ages untold, and those who lived there wanted for not in their idyllic existence. Untouched they were by the world, hidden away in a pocket of paradise unknown to all others. Indeed, theirs was a blessed existence, but such gifts were a treasure that could not go unnoticed by all. On that fateful day, a shadow had passed the sun, and it was in the duration of this mid-day’s night that from high upon the mountain a thunderous roar did erupt. On a cold frigid wind came a new beast to the valley, with scales that glittered white as fresh fallen snow. Reptilian as it seemed, upon vermillion wings did it soar, and from its breath came the fury of deep winter’s hoar. It withered the forests that those who lived there called home, and those caught in its wake were frozen to the bone. Not even stone could stand against the great being’s wrath, and reduced to foundations were all buildings in its path. From within these ruins it plundered an invaluable hoard, taking the treasure of the valley’s great lord. With one final roar the beast then took to the skies, returning to the mountain from whence it came on high. Down below lay the valley, its inhabitants frozen firm, in fear under the shadow of that great ICY WYRM.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN to debut his latest EP, which follows in the destructive wake of his Dust Devil EP on the label as well as further recent releases on labels including Neuropunk Records & C4C Recordings. Filled to the brim with the producer’s characteristic ferocious tones, the EP features a set of four tracks surging with serpentine basslines and deviously distorted sonics as MIZO leads the latest onslaught of the EATBRAIN horde from atop the eponymous ICY WYRM.

A little bit about René LaVice

From the humble beginnings of finding out about Drum & Bass music via the late night broadcasts on Toronto’s College Radio stations (88.1FM & 89.5FM) while growing up, René has travelled worlds away from where he started. Flash forward a decade or so, René’s own productions are now hailed around the world as some of the genre’s most iconic and innovative records in electronic dance music. He’s flown worldwide performing shows and cultivating the sound of Drum & Bass as a true tastemaker and leader in the genre. 

As though coming full circle, René was approached by the BBC about creating his own specialist show on Radio 1, so in 2017, following in the footsteps of legendary former hosts Fabio & Grooverider, and Friction, René is now the Drum & Bass representative on the world’s biggest platform. 
 
As a producer, René LaVice’s sounds are unmistakable. Known for combining different styles and influences with his own sensibility, his music has a thumbprint which stands out in the mix. Nowhere could this be more evident than in his first breakthrough track ‘Headlock,’ which took the scene by storm and turned heads of tastemakers worldwide onto what would soon become one of dance music’s most exciting producers. Since then, René’s made a string of hits, such as The Calling ft. Ivy Mairi, a musical hybrid unlike any other which was A-Listed on Radio 1 for weeks and hit the billboard top 40 dance chart. 

Renowned for his remix track record and ability to turn a song upside down, he has remixed an impressive roster of artists such as Diplo, DJ Fresh, Craig David & The Prodigy, making him a highly sought after remix artist.  He released 3 albums on the illustrious Ram Records which earned him the respect of young fans and veteran DJ’s alike. 

Having the support of touring Drum & Bass royalty such as Andy C, Goldie & Randall combined with attention from Radio presenters and tastemakers such as Annie Mac, Mistajam, Zane Lowe, Nick Grimshaw, Greg James, and Scott Mills is like a dream to any young producer and René’s skills as a performer and a DJ have been consolidated thanks to touring all around the globe and turning even the most unlikely shows upside down. Known for crowdsurfing at his gigs, he may sound like a bit of 
an anomaly when it comes to dance music. The excitement he feels from his music is as captivating as it is infectious. Having performed shows at major festivals such as Glastonbury, Download, EDC, and world class venues like Brixton Academy, Fabric, and Alexandra Palace, René has evolved into one of the most exciting headlining acts in dance music. 

Now living in London, UK, one can only speculate where René LaVice’s journey through music will lead next.
