The 5th installment of our In:Focus Series delves deep into a record label that we have a lot of love for. They have such a diverse array of sounds and styles that you can keep going back to again and again.

 We present to you, Ornaments.

  Ornaments was started back in 2008, and has been home to some of the worlds finest purveyors of the deep. Just a quick flick through the discography and you’ll find names like Rhauder, Paul St. Hilaire, youANDme, Moodymann, The Analog Roland Orchestra, Carlos Nilmmns, Rennie Foster, Sascha Dive, Steve Bug and Mathimidori to name just a few.

  As a label Ornaments covers a huge variety of sounds. You can find everything from Ambient, Deep House, Dub House, Hip hop, Dub Techno and minimal.   

Their most recent record came from Wareika with his LP - Tizinabi and is the 54th release. As is the case with all the mixes in our InFocus Series, the problem is not what to include but what can we possibly leave out. It’s safe to say however that due to variety of musical output by Ornaments that we will certainly be re-visiting the back catalogue for a part 2 at some point in the future.

RF Trax is a new imprint by stalwart, Canadian artist, Rennie Foster, known for his varied international releases, strong connections to the Detroit music community and Japanese underground club scene.

The first release on this imprint is all about the tribe. Showing Rennie's interest in authentic collaboration among like-minded artists. Third wave Detroit techno legends, Claude Young and Sean Deason, are not a part of history, they still lead the charge in terms of creativity and production skill, as evidenced here in these outstanding remixes. Claude goes deep with stunning piano work and detailed arrangement, well Deason goes the opposite direction, for a relentless, jacking DJ weapon. NYC's Butane delivers a monstrous DJ track as well, true to his minimalistic club-funk signature style. Mark Archer, the UK techno pioneer behind Altern 8 and Nexus 21, takes it to the very heart of warehouse culture with uplifting piano and a soulful, synth driven, melancholy, vibe.

For lovers of timeless, quality, dance music, unhindered by hype, genre, and creative constrictions. This is homage to the roots of dance music culture with eyes and hearts toward the future.

Artwork for RF Trax is created by Vancouver based artist Vasho Pekar. The unusual method of creation involves photographing projected images and text onto objects; there is no photoshop involved in these images, they are each an unaltered photograph.

Multi instrumentalist and deep house master producer Lars Bartkuhn returns to Alex Bradleys Utopia Records, a label whose ambition is to find harmony and balance through sound, design and experience. Fusing organic sounds with electronic soundscapes Bartkuhn’s 10-minute pathway to the African plains does exactly that, An ode to the ’Massai’ takes the listener and dancer on a journey of real depth and positive spirit. With it’s musicality (Bartkuhn on bass, drums, guitar, vocals, piano and synthesizer) complex arrangement and phrasing, ‘Massai' is a timeless and personal statement from Bartkuhn as he seeks the essence of what dance music in 2017 could be, a movement away from relative beats and to a more advance and spiritual sound that has been a mainstay in his compositions.
 
Garnering support from the likes of Hunee, MCDE, Ron Trent, Jeremy Underground Paris, Volcov, Bicep and a host of taste makers, Bartkuhn's back on the European music scene after years away in Brazil working on Jazz compositions which only saw the light of day in Japan. Having already lit up Berlin's Panorama Bar for Tamo Sumo and Lakuti with his inspiring live show (that features him on Guitar, vocals, synthesizer and drums) Bartkuhn is set to tour Europe in 2017 with his music more relevant on dance-floors than ever.

Rennie Foster has been a well-respected figure in the Canadian music and art community for over two decades. He influenced many as an early pioneer of the Hip-Hop / B-Boy movement, and later the House Music and Techno / Rave scene, participating in the first events in Western Canada during the birth of these now common urban subcultures. He is also very well known within the niche of graffiti art for his early work, having been archived in several published books.

Rennie relocated to Tokyo Japan in 2004 and became an important part of the Japanese club scene, playing all over Japan in venues such as Womb, ageHa, and Yellow, maintaining DJ residencies in Tokyo and Kyoto at the Metro club and at the Nagisa Music Festival in Tokyo and Osaka. Rennie was consistently ranked in the top 50 DJs in Japan by LOUD Magazine until re-locating back to Canada in 2011. Rennie is currently a resident DJ at Western Canada’s top after-hours club, Gorg-O-Mishin Vancouver, BC, regularly traveling to play as a guest at underground venues across Canada, Detroit, New York,and Paris and has played festivals such as Shambhala and  Bass Coast among others.

Rennie Foster has released music with Jack White’s Third Man Label, classic dance music labels including Transmat, F-Communications, Synewave, Teknotika, Subject Detroit, and is widely recognized for his underground anthem Devil's Water on Rebirth Records. Rennie has remixed, or been remixed by, some of the top names in dance music such as Juan Atkins, James Zabiela and Swayzak. He has released many singles, EPs, and four full length albums. He runs a signature record label RF and continues to produce tough urban house music and stylish techno for cutting edge dance music imprint including Goldmin Music and Skylax Records in Paris and the Detroit based Soiree Records.
