Call The Sun is a raw techno gem by outspoken Canadian DJ and recording artist, Rennie Foster. This is conscious and uplifting release from RF, Rennie's signature DIY label, and features remixes by underground Chicago House master, Amir Alexander, and Vancouver Bass Music boss, Max Ulis (of Sabota). Just a warning of what is to come on the RF imprint, from the message of empowerment, to the cover art, drawn by Rennie's late mentor and street artist, Hans Fear (RIP), to the vocal sample in Rennie's own "Watershed Edit", recorded on location in Ghana at the Bui Village, before it's people were displaced by the building of the Dam on the Black Volta river. Whatever is happening in the commercial dance music world, this is the opposite.

RFTX7 : Rennie Foster featuring Ely - Midnight Sun (Original Mix)

I was recently asked to choose a couple tracks that have been influential to me by Bass Agenda radio show. I wasn’t sure which Deep Forest song to include, I ended up going with “Hunting”. However, the whole first Deep Forest album was very important for me. Many moonlit nights driving the Victoria waterfront alone on my scooter with that tape in my walkman, soaking in the music and ocean air, much younger and not sure where I was going, just can’t sleep. I thought a lot about the music I was going to make one day on those rides. Anyway, another Deep Forest song I was considering was “Savana Dance”. I always loved that song, although the upfront euro-synths are the wrong sort of pop for my dance-floor. Here is an edit I made to play out, hope you dig it. Much respect to Deep Forest.

My official remix of the Infiniti classic "Game One". The original track was created by Juan Atkins and Orlando Voorn. This remix was released in 2007 on wax as part of a double pack featuring mixes by Santiago Salazar, Los Hermanos and more on Orlando's Night Vision label with artwork by Haqq. Referencing several eras of house music, and sounding like it could only be made right now “Do It Like Hip Hop” explains how a new underground, full of old schoolers who have been doing it and young people with their eyes on the prize, are challenging the music game, and every game, with an authentic DIY style, fusing Hip Hop spirit with all aspects of music and culture.

Rennie Foster certainly knows about this, cutting his teeth with a Hip Hop group in the early 90s that spawned several Swollen Members. One of them being the legendary emcee, Moka Only, the featured voice on the track, a rapper with his own board on Skull Skates and an unprecedented DIY spirit. His verses on this are clever and tough, as if being on a house track required extra skills, no dance rhymes here, and no censorship either.

The MK inspired organ riff hint at Rennie Foster’s strong connection to Detroit, a place he calls a spiritual home base and found a strong fanbase, releasing on many Detroit labels and working with the motor city’s most classic artists. Moka hint’s at this in his lyric “Create a new tribe and assemble them, from the Vancoo to the shores of Michigan”, and then in the middle of spitfire verses, the song becomes a classic west coast deep house jam, with Moka’s warm and genuine singing in that style. Few artists could combine to create this sound.

Rennie Foster has been a well-respected figure in the Canadian music and art community for over two decades. He influenced many as an early pioneer of the Hip-Hop / B-Boy movement, and later the House Music and Techno / Rave scene, participating in the first events in Western Canada during the birth of these now common urban subcultures. He is also very well known within the niche of graffiti art for his early work, having been archived in several published books.

Rennie relocated to Tokyo Japan in 2004 and became an important part of the Japanese club scene, playing all over Japan in venues such as Womb, ageHa, and Yellow, maintaining DJ residencies in Tokyo and Kyoto at the Metro club and at the Nagisa Music Festival in Tokyo and Osaka. Rennie was consistently ranked in the top 50 DJs in Japan by LOUD Magazine until re-locating back to Canada in 2011. Rennie is currently a resident DJ at Western Canada’s top after-hours club, Gorg-O-Mishin Vancouver, BC, regularly traveling to play as a guest at underground venues across Canada, Detroit, New York,and Paris and has played festivals such as Shambhala and  Bass Coast among others.

Rennie Foster has released music with Jack White’s Third Man Label, classic dance music labels including Transmat, F-Communications, Synewave, Teknotika, Subject Detroit, and is widely recognized for his underground anthem Devil's Water on Rebirth Records. Rennie has remixed, or been remixed by, some of the top names in dance music such as Juan Atkins, James Zabiela and Swayzak. He has released many singles, EPs, and four full length albums. He runs a signature record label RF and continues to produce tough urban house music and stylish techno for cutting edge dance music imprint including Goldmin Music and Skylax Records in Paris and the Detroit based Soiree Records.
