Algeria's national anthem, Kassaman, is an anti-French tour de force. "O France, the day of reckoning is at hand," it says at one point. Which would seem shocking if it hadn't been written during the country's fight for independence by a poet, Mufdi Zakariah, who was in prison at the time. The music was added later by the great Egyptian musician, Mohamed Fawzi. It's also less bad when you consider France's own anthem calls for the "watering of our fields with impure blood"!

Kassaman (We Pledge), Algeria's national anthem, sung

Israel's national anthem is one of the few anthems that doesn't try to be regal. Instead it's solemn, sad even, which is probably appropriate given the words were written by a poet Naphtali Herz Imber in Ottoman-era Palestine and are effectively a prayer for Israel to be created. These are the lyrics:

As long as in the heart, within
A Jewish soul still yearns
And onward, towards the ends of the east
An eye still gazes toward Zion

Our hope is not yet lost
The hope of two thousand years old
To be a free nation in our land
The land of Zion and Jerusalem

Unsurprisingly given that, it's an anthem that continually causes controversy, especially when Israeli-Arabs refuse to stand for it. There are several judges who don't, and whenever it happens, right-wing MPs complain and some call for the song to be changed.
A lot of people think the music's by Smetana, but it's actually just similar to one of his compositions. The tune has folk origins.
