We had an activity about looping in assembly language. Our task is simple: display the numbers 0 to 9 with spaces in-between each number. I got the code to work in the command prompt using the 'debug' command in WINDOWS 7 in our school. My laptop is Windows 10 and I recently found out that there's no 'debug' command in the command prompt. So I tried writing my code in DOSBox 0.74 (latest, maybe). Every time i run it in DOSBox, the programs suddenly hangs up and then crashes. Here's the code


I have amended my previous Stackoverflow answer to suggest a variety of MS-DOS DEBUG.EXE programs may not work properly when run under DOSBox. Ross Ridge confirms he can duplicate your problem with DOS 6.22's debugger when run inside DOSBox.


I found the same problem running a script file for Debug within Dosbox.but I found another editor: Notepad2. runs great and small and changes color to highlight assembler words.Had to use debug ver 1.25 though.


I am trying to track down the MBR on a scavenged Hard Drive. The hard drive won't boot so I've been trying to change the MBR through DEBUG.exe. The problem starts with my 64 bit machine because debug.exe is a 16-bit program that is no longer supported unless you have DosBox.


My main question is; If I run DosBox and mount the hard drive I'm trying to debug. Am I viewing the memory on the hard drive if I run the Debug.exe from the mounted drive through DosBox or simple viewing the host 64 bit machine which is running DosBox?


I don't believe DosBOX emulates low-level access to mounted drives - everything works on the file level - so using debug.exe won't work. Also, from what I recall, you have to load a sector into RAM using the l command or something similar, edit it in memory, and then write the sector back.


DOSBOX debugger (installer 0.72) does not run in Windows 7.

all things what i want from debugger:
1. conitional BP's like bp if edx=value. this feature supported in Syser kernel debugger.
2. dump VGA palette. it would be great, tired of catching some palettes.


I've found the heavy debugger to be incredibly useful for interrogating old assembly code of mine. I've noticed however that when single-stepping through a program, the dosbox display doesn't seem to update regularly. This can be frustrating when dealing with more complicated c-code because, for example, I tend to have to wait for an indeterminate amount of time to see a printf output.





Looking through the code it seems that the debug loop doesn't regularly call the render updates, which seem to all stem from VGA_VerticalTimer. Since this also adds several PIC events I can see why it would be a potential problem to have that regularly run while debugging, but would it be possible to force a display update with a command in the debug window? Is it in fact dangerous to run VGA_VerticalTimer while the debugger is broken on a line?


I was using auto, however a quick test with core=normal exhibits the same behavior. Specifically, the the dosbox window won't change after single-stepping over a "printf" call and in fact the only way to get an update seems to be to set a breakpoint past some code which takes a bit more time to run and hit F5.


Debugger builds provided by Qbix are probably "heavy"; few bother with the middle ground. However, if you want to know for sure in any
 debugger build, there will be memory-change breakpoint commands (BPM/BPPM/BPLM) and CPU logging commands listed when you use the HELP command in the debugger.
