For “i can’t hear you: 3. slow core” artist and movement instructor Anisha Müller contributed with her project FemmeFitness. A fitness class reflecting on various types of work (as in emotional, invisible, physical, racialised, and gendered) and body re-connections gave space to all the work we do that goes unnoticed.
This audio track is the introduction to a workout routine consisting mostly of low energy stretches. “We will stretch from all the times we have been over-stretched”. During the FemmeFitness class, special care was given to language and various abilities, with adaptable positions that encourage people to alter moves to suit their individual body.

This is a fragment of a radio drama musical with live music, dialogues and a culinary tasting performance which was performed during “i can’t hear you: 4. Diantara”. The radio play presents the story of Tama, who tries to find redemption to his crumbling relationship with the people surrounding him through making a Tumpeng, a ceremonial dish from Indonesia. Diantara was developed by Ariel Orah and Bilawa Respati from Soydivision Kollektiv who look at their experience  of collective work within the culinary and cultural spheres by drawing on references from Indonesian history and tradition amongst others.

A7 - RAW Interlude

For the 8 hours live broadcast and work shift “i can’t hear you: 1. come equal” Anna contributed interviews conducted in several languages, where various workers have been asked to manifest their suppressed complaints, anger, frustration, demands, fear, sadness, or laughter. She proposed that she can even transmit their words to their previous or current employers. On this record you hear an excerpt from a live communication laboratory situation during the broadcast. In her reflection on the interviews Anna points out the importance of manual workers' voices and their access dichotomy with intellectual workers that often are the ones who get to voice their complaints in a cultural setting.

A6 - Anna Zawadzka “What would you tell your employer if you could speak freely?”

For “i can’t hear you: 5. embedded – when i was with you i was a” Brad invited the audience to listen to the pavement in the garden of Changing Room. Workshop participants reflected on how they are grounded (or not), followed by an ASMR performance featuring amplified building modules. The piece on this vinyl interweaves the tingling circular movements from Brad’s performance with the group’s ground encounter and was recorded alongside Monika Charkowska, Joe Frew, Rodrigo Guerreiro, Nik Haffner, Luisa Kleemann, Vega Matos, Daniela Moony, Tina Müller-Westermann, Kirsten Palz, Ana-Irina Roman and Cary Shiu.

A5 - Brad Nath  “grounds for a workshop"

The whole event series “i can’t hear you” was hosted in the space of Changing Room in Berlin under the careful and often conceptual hospitality and participation of the artist Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez. To the invitation to contribute to this record Tatiana responded with an audio composition that takes as a source the sound of a body massage machine when massaging a body. Manipulated by modular sound filters it focuses on the sound of the machine and its effort to relax the human muscles of the body. Simultaneously producing a tense noise resembling factory work, a noise polluted work environment reminiscent of techno.

A4 - Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez “Robobody”

For the first episode of “i can’t hear you: 1. come equal” Ralf Wendt responded with performative lectures titled “Rolling Roles and Rules” where he proposed various instances of questioning “hierarchy-free” communication. Wendt brought to attention several perspectives: “nonverbal” expressions, suprasegmentalia, gesture languages, mixed languages, secret languages of resistance, animal conversations, violent speaking, controlled ways of listening and psychoacoustic recognition, fading, muting, mourning and screaming. As a continuation of his contribution, Ralf’s audio piece for the record presents the uttering of an inside out mood swing before and during a job interview.

“sound sound marks” are spread out across the entire record. You are invited to take part using the inserted sheet of tissue paper in the sleeve of this record(LP). This work is based on the soundscape from the “sound sound marks” workshop that took place during “i can’t hear you: 3. slow core” which focused on the acoustic properties of our work environments. The compositions are a mix of sounds captured during the workshop and recordings of various work environments which came as answers to an open call straight to Raluca’s email for this specific artwork.

About the release:

RESTLESS
to blank out, blinding out and fading down, simultaneously meaning to physically disrupt or even delete. Here, an independent disappearance into invisibility or inaudibility, as well as a deliberate act to interrupt, or even entirely eliminate, haptic and acoustic tangibility, are placed side by side. They describe a dynamic limbo between states of being and non-being.This is why we are speaking of silence, even when there’s sound, of emptiness, even when space is created. 
What is blank, what is the absence of content or material? What is a rest? Something that remains, exists, but somehow isn’t worth mentioning in terms of its existence and audibility – background, noise, static? 

A record player on a pedestal in the space,
a tone arm lifting up.
The needle comes down – a pop and click.
Touch.
A swirling, vortex-shaped track from edge to center.
A description of beginning and end.
While the lead-out groove’s function is to keep the needle from crossing the label at the center of the disc, we are also well familiar with the noise that calls on us, maybe causes us to jump up, to flip the record.
Listening to 2 x 400 x 1.8 second samples of pure functionality. The sound is restless, the 12” record played on the turntable like static, rain, driving on tarmac, fire in your ears. 
A cylindrical, glossy, black sculpture, a block of vinyl, confronts a picture on the wall – square, yellow, reduced, abstract. Static, rain, driving on tarmac, fire.
Every repetition contains selection, every selection contains difference.
The sound in your ears is densifying.  Static, rain, driving on tarmac, fire.

Rest, material, medium: the boundaries seem fluid. The elements in the room draw transformational processes from functionality towards autonomy, towards the becoming of form and object, towards representation. A before and after become visible. If you will, this state, that the term blank out describes as deleting and vanishing into insignificance or invisibility, becomes a possibility for manifestation. Because even nothingness is in a state of being – and the permeability of disappearance holds the potential to break with this state of being altogether. 
The yellow square on the wall, the back of a record box, withholds what seems to be the secret of the cover. It’s a surface of pure color, only disrupted by an old price tag, otherwise empty, blank.

A record release by Research and Waves and ZCKR Records

'Code' by Berlin and L.A.-based artist Byrke Lou is the third LP curated and released by Research and Waves and ZCKR Records. For the record the artist presents a sonic curation of her work '.ctu_isbtm'. On Side A the listener encounters bits of '.ctu_isbtm' through '.fa', a virtual sound synthesis system designed by the artist. Operating in a space between sculpture, code and electronics, the system scans 3dimensional objects via a live video feed and programmatically encodes the artistâ€™s glass sculptures within a language of pitches and rhythms using cultural samples as a translative matrix. The generated sound patterns are reencountered on the B-Side of the LP which contains the recording of a live-coding session. By adapting her work for the vinyl format, Byrke Lou creates a complex interplay of dimension, information and time that simultaneously embraces and reveals processes of coding, encoding and decoding. Along with Byrke Louâ€™s sound piece the physical record features words by AGF.

For the release of 'Code' Byrke Lou and Research and Waves developed an evening long event at Modular+ that blends exhibition, performance and music formats. Physical exhibits will be shown along a live set by the artist, dance elements and DJ-sets. Drawing on the releases themes and materials, each contribution touches on a different aspect of the process of encoding and decoding culture and time. 

Code by Byrke Lou will be available for purchase at the release event and can be acquired online, directly from ZCKR Records, and in record stores internationally after the release.

Nicolás Gravel specializes in brain imaging and neuroscience. A fragmentary ontology of “Asi es la life” was presented at the exhibition in the form of a talk. Together with the occasional sound of a homemade synthesizer, the narrative process was substantiated by a flow of utterances, selection of short stories, images and quotes.

True appreciation for their time and friendship across the globe at this very special time. We feel grateful to work with our collaborator and friend - Lucas Odahara.

The release is happening on the 12th July between 2pm - 6pm at the closing of the exhibition “Read Before the Fire”, where Lucas developed a multimedia site-specific installation for the Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim about language in times of loss: loss of memories, of social and political rights or laws. Lucas reflects on the political turmoil in Brazil and the disappearance of large parts of the Amazon rainforest. Among text-based works, images and objects, there is a sound installation, now turned into a vinyl as the exhibition catalogue.
