About the mix: This mix is a love letter to the Queer and POC roots, and the other early sounds, of true 'proper' House music, as it speaks through Ceri's soul. Honouring the past, believing in a better future, channelling the spirit of the Sound Factory, early Panorama Bar, and other underground spaces that shaped the early music from this culture.

Ceri takes us on a raw, soulful and emotive journey through all flavours, genres and timelines, of what house music means to her. There is a message in the music, a soundtrack of struggle and liberation, dark and light, and the dance-floor as a place to connect and come together for a greater purpose.

Featuring Forgotten Gems, Hard to Find Records, Vinyl Only, Classics, some Queer Underground Anthems, starting deep, then flowing through Chicago, New York, Detroit, Berlin and UK flavours of House, from dub and deep, to acid, garagey, and subtly more banging and ravey as it moves.

This is a mix with a message of LOVE, hope, and community. A celebration of where house music came from and where it is going: survival, resistance, joy, transformation, connection, and the dream of a better world.

Featuring innovators of the genre such as Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle, Queer Pioneer Junior Vasquez, cheeky Mariah and Loleatta remixes (obviously), as well as more modern cuts, that still capture the sound of that timeless essence, by the likes of D'Julz, Pangea and Ceri herself.

Not forgetting a bespoke spoken word introduction by Detroit's Legendary Gari Romalis (Electronix), talking about why it's so important to spread the message of the true roots, preserve and love the culture, whilst also pushing things forwards...

Ceri says 'I put my heart and soul into this mix, hoping to capture the essence of what 'proper' house music means to me; the true meaning of house music, including it's Black, Brown, and Queer Origins, as well as other sounds that continue to evolve, as the genre diversifies and expands across the world'.

We linked up with the king, Donato Dozzy, at the iconic Brancaleone club in his hometown in Rome for a 5-hour set.

Along with his passion for electronic music Gerryboo, Geebo, Gerry Macca, The Mac Attack has not been a stranger to controversy;  from allegedly setting fire to sound systems at festivals, fighting with a BBM magazine journalist and consistently playing Born Slippy at plus 8.  In an interview with now defunct lads magazine FHM in 2007 the Belfast based DJ admitted that his trajectory from the The Bedroom DJ’s DJ’ to the king of ‘Clubs in Pubs’ scene has been “less than ideal” and went on to tell the interviewer “I’m the dj Belfast deserved but not the one it needed”.  This interview subsequently lead to a dogpile on the now defunct social media platform Bebo which forced the now hyphonated ‘G-bo’ into relative obscurity.  Since then he has partnered and broke bread with local clubbing institutions like Shine, Twitch, Acroplane Recordings, DSNT et al and went to meet, greet, wine, dine and warm up for the likes of Radioactive Man, Skudge, Sunil Sharpe, Ceephax Acid Crew, Inigo Kennedy, Untold, Boddika et al.

Conor Schmtz Invites Radio Slave (Rekids) + Tripper

"I'm ready to bring back gatekeeping." The New Yorker staff writer discusses how to protect the underground, experimenting with drugs and her new book, Health and Safety.

Can drugs help us find meaning in music and nightlife? This is a question that today's Exchange guest, New Yorker staff writer Emily Witt, asks in earnest in her new book Health and Safety: A Breakdown. Just released in hardcover in the UK and Europe, the memoir traces Witt's life in her early-to-mid 30s. A journalist living and working in Brooklyn, she began experimenting with psychedelics and club drugs after years of living what she describes as a conservative, straight-and-narrow, middle-class life. She became enamoured with the borough's underground raves, frequenting events like the festival Sustain-Release, the party Unter and sets at Bushwick haunt Bossa Nova Civic Club, all while falling in love with an aspiring DJ and producer she calls Andrew.

As the book progresses, Witt documents the growing MAGA movement in America, gun rights rallies and mass shootings. As the country falls apart, she watches her romantic relationship fall apart, too. Drugs and Brooklyn nightlife, she writes, became both an escape and a way to rearrange a world that she starts to feel no longer makes sense. 

Witt shares critical opinions about the underground scene's capacity to be a utopia and place of belonging in an increasingly hostile world, arguing that there should be more gatekeeping in place to protect a scene that's threatened by capitalism and the mainstream. She also interrogates what she calls "woke identity politics" in Brooklyn, the lack of change that came from the Black Lives Matter movement, empty calls for political protest that dominated the early days of the pandemic and why, despite everything, she's chosen to stay in Brooklyn for good.
