Fever 105 Funky Instalment No. 07 - Bill Brewster

Zurich producer Boaksi’s debut double vinyl LP was released in 2022 to high acclaim. It folds spacious synths, guitars, and layered percussion into quietly arresting compositions. For those who lived through 2000s-era electronica, there’s a welcome nostalgia to its style. While it leans more bedroom-produced than studio-polished, that roughness lends it a kind of intimacy—full of originality, warmth, and quiet invention.

US artist Danny Daze, out of Miami, has long been affiliated with the more electronic side of dance music. From the early days in the electro scene and more abstract forms of techno, the Omnidisc boss has covered a lot of musical ground since then. Helping to reimagine the underground landscape, Danny was pivotal in the early 2010s club sound with releases on Hot Creations, Ellum Audio, and Kompakt. He soon turned his attention back to the obscure side of the dancefloor and IDM. As much a music lover and dancer as he is an artist, he knows exactly what works on the dancefloor and his recent album “::BLUE::” on his own Omnidisc imprint exemplifies this ethos. Family Silver are Mr Nick ‘The Gun’ Stephens and Casper ‘Volte Face’ Clark.

Nick was the publican at The Gun, a much-loved Hackney institution that recently closed its doors – more on that here for those who have been living under a rock. Nick’s excellent Netil radio show can also be found here.


 
Casper, is based in Clapton and was the music programmer for Camden institution The Lock Tavern where our paths originally crossed – most of the time being kicked out whilst DJing. Casper’s shared stages with Justice, Jeff Mills, Helena Hauff, Daniel Avery and many more and is also known for his long-running BleeD events via which he collaborated with labels like Blackest Ever Black, PAN and Downwards. Both share a love for “v lo-fi early eighties sound, kosmische, post-punk and scuzzy electronics,” with Nick’s influences ranging from 80s TV themes and Giorgio Moroder to The KLF, while Casper was shaped in his youth by electronic acts like Leftfield, Underworld, and William Orbit with DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo Records becoming a huge influence later on.

Their sound sits between post-punk and the electronic… so with that in mind let’s give it a listen shall we?

Handily via the wonder of a recording  from this year’s Field Maneuvers where they opened The Gun’s stage.

Rūgštus Slėnis is a dive into the wild, layered world of sound—think tribal rhythms stitched together with an acid edge, pulsing like a living thing. My mixes shift between light and shadow, dreamy drifts and trippy highs, always eclectic, always moving. From his early days, he has been chasing a sound that’s carved deep into his psyche, blending the raw energy of nature with the flow of my inner alchemy. A story told through sound — raw, real, and an open invitation to feel the rhythm.

Curiosities 55 – Cici

Hot seducers. Two of them. On one 7inch. The A-Side is called “Happen”. It comes from prolific Tokyo based DJ and producer Hoshina Anniversary. A simple drum machine groove, a manic melody, witching siren sounds, psychedelic voices, some soft chords, and soulful high-pitched singing, somewhere between Dam-Funk coolness and Ian Svenonius- The-Make-Up sixties pop longing. One for warm sexy nights under neon lights. Out there in psychic realms. The flip brings a Dolphins interpretation. Yes, that feverish trio behind R.i.O., consisting of Nadia D'Alò, Benedikt Frey and Menqui. Their freshly recorded version comes with haunting nonchalant singing, displaying the tunes core melody as a more prominent actor of the play. Michael-Mann-Pop- Nostalgia with a baroque touch, that waves dark-ish. Even some Jon Hassle feeling is in there. Hoshina Anniversary disclosed, that the original song is inspired by jazz musicians like Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius and Keith Jarrett. None of them is directly stylistically audible. But their kind of blue is all over. On the A as well as on the B. Twice soul music for the free.

It's a special welcome for Laurent Garnier in our 25th Anniversary slot, who last featured on the show back in 2005. His mix takes us on a journey through his Soundtrack collection and laced with dialog throughout. It opens with epic strings courtesy of Morton Gould and into Blixa Bargeld and Nick Cave's original score for Ghosts of the Civil Dead. Then it's Herbie Hancock from 'Round Midnight', David Holmes from Ocean's Eleven and Lalo Schiffrin from Enter the Dragon.
