NWB weekly podcasts continue with a jacking otherworldly set from Mike Servito — featured as part of No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond 2021. As the unknown loomed so large for all of us in the last of our major streams, Servito brought a graceful power of mystery to the grooves he laid down.

Juana has enticed crowds all over the world at venues such as Berghain, WAS, De School, Basement, Nowadays, and numerous underground warehouses. Over the past several years, Juana has played alongside DJs such as, DVS1, Jamaica Suk, Perc, Headless Horseman, 999999999, Efdemin, and DJ Stingray. Juana joined the Discwoman roster in 2017 and is a founding member of the DC QT BIPOC collective NOXEEMA JACKSON since 2021.

Juana originally hails from the city of Chicago. She started out like most, as a random kid on the dance floor every week at places like The Generator and Boom Boom Room, and has been DJing house, techno, and disco parties since roughly 2001. Juana moved to DC in 2003 and began hosting weekly live internet radio shows on HandzOnRadio (Baltimore) and Cyberjamz (Tampa) and playing parties in the DC deep house scene, upping her skills alongside legendary DJs like Sam “the Man” Burns,” and at clubs including Red and the DC Sanctuary. Juana started obsessively collecting disco and early house records in the late 90s and eventually developed an undying penchant for straight-ahead techno and darker shades of Chicago underground acid and deep house of the 80s and 90s. 

Over the past several years, Juana has made her mark in DC as one of only a handful of techno DJs, as a member of the founding squad of the Sequence collective, led by Ron Jackson. Sequence was the first underground party committed to consistently showcasing local and global techno DJs and crafting a dark, dangerous, sometimes hellishly uncomfortable party vibe hitherto unavailable in the DC area. 

As a producer, her first release “Discipline Issues” was released as part of a compilation on Katie Rex’s Bound label, and her first independent EP “Floating” landed in 2020. Her most recent EP “Peaks” was released in July 2021, and she also appeared on the TRAX ONLY Soft Touch compilation in spring of 2021 and the Neighborhoods Vol. 1 compilation on World Building in fall of 2021. She is currently working on her first full-length album project for release in 2023.

RNR- Juana (RNR x Golden Record NYC: Season Opener Sunrise Closing Set)

While traversing a realm of appearances many truths are heard and not seen. An audio representation of a moment in time captured and preserved - a sonic photograph. This recording is one such artifact, one that for me illustrates a fine line bordering cosmos and chaos. Something that can not be duplicated during a controlled studio session which is absent of collective effervescence. So far from a quiet game of solitaire, but more a test of faith where reckless abandon embraces instantaneous risk. The evening was a spiritual conversation that embraced us all through the magical forces of music set beneath a canopy of trees, sprouting from the grounds of an enchanted forest. Evidence of the artist’s hand and thought process is unforgivingly present while creating a range of possibilities for spontaneous storytelling surrounded by an atmosphere of ecstatic energy. This memory will live with me forever.

Fresh from Stochastic Drift, Barker’s buzzing second album named Bleep Record of the Month alongside an exclusive 12”, Barker sends a mix that really digs deep into the unique sonic methodology he has constructed across his solo career width a suitable breadth for what is also a milestone in the series, Bleep Mix #300.

From Debiasing to Utility to Stochastic Drift, Barker has been reimagining club music without its definitive thump, instead driven by melody and tactile synthesis, and this selection of tracks expands Barker’s soundworld with a host of artists walking a similar path. “For this mix, I picked out some of my favourite uptempo ambient tracks, recorded at home with two decks and a mixer. It’s music I've used in a lot of different contexts, as a DJ and listener, and I hope you enjoy it.”

Though the occasional dancefloor thump makes itself known, such as on Adriana Lopez’ ‘What Lies Behind’, it’s mostly in quaking subs rather than actual four to the floor, providing some ground for this mix’s airy freeform variety to fly over. We have the wooden plunks and seaspray of Afefe Iku’s Kenyan island sound, the wonky gamelan of Tyler Friedman’s maze of bells and chimes, the dense atmosphere of shaker-produced rain and electrical chirps forged deep in the ruins of The Future Sound Of London.

The midsection of this mix contains some magic in particular: the maestro of drumless trance Lorenzo Senni creates motion from pure jagged synth energy on ‘The Power of Failing’, dissolving into the aether of an unreleased Barker track, which further discharges into the kaleidoscopic stutters of Caribou’s ‘Never Come Back’ with jubilant piano chords and vocal clips wrought into a glitchy, swirling maelstrom of Koreless' prickly warmth. Digital Justice’s ‘Theme From It’s All Gone Pearshaped’ follows, a timeless staple for anyone wishing to dabble in melodic motion and synthsmithery, or any DJ set seeking to add some lift without losing momentum, of which this mix is in no short supply.

“...Divine Ritual is an transdisciplinary project that moves between the dimensions of performance art and live creation. The experimental landscape is primarily constituted by the relationship between performers and spectators, within a creative path aimed at generating a ritual. The spectator, with their presence, will be a founding part of the creative design of the ritual itself. The ritual, which draws on the essential elements of Greek mythology, particularly the myth of Persephone and the Eleusinian Mysteries, is the archetypal experience in which sound and body are fused together, energy and matter converge in a single language, and full immersion between the terrestrial world and the cosmos is achieved. In an experimental process, the manipulation of electronic music sound will rhythmically punctuate the various moments, reaching a peak of tension and sonic pressure, determining the foundations of the ritual action, serving as a moment of ablution and then of expressive effusion for the performers, exploring the possibility of alerting the body enveloped in an uninterrupted sonic envelope and exposed to a collective vibration in which it is impossible to perceive a separation between performers and spectators. From listening to this inspiration, and guided by intuition and perception, the performers will linger in an empirical area with the sole support of three dramaturgical keys: DESCENT, SEARCH, ASCENT (as in the diachronic sequence of the Eleusinian Mysteries). For our first Truancy Volume of the year we welcome Peverelist, a producer and DJ whose long ties with Bristol have given him the means to document a thriving and visionary community over the last thirteen years. Genres have held almost no relevancy to him throughout his career, and he's described his vision and role as a label owner as simply being able to forge and create new narratives in dance music while simultaneously showcasing the talent the city of Bristol regularly had to offer. Whilst a large part of his story harks back to breaking down the framework of what the-then emerging sound of dubstep could be, it's the genre diversifying nature of his three labels, Punch Drunk, Livity Sound and sister label Dnuos Ytivil that have made him such an important figure in UK dance music. As a producer himself, it's almost too easy to recall to mind any of the classics or the one-day-to be in his discography - the now Drake sampled "Roll With The Punches", "Over Here" with Appleblim, "Aztec Chant", "Infinity Is Now", "Under Clearing Skies" from his most recent album Tessellations and his numerous collaborations with Kowton, Asusu and Hodge have made him revered by fans and his peers. 

Where many young producers from Bristol will cite Peverelist as an influence, he in turn will say Smith & Mighty paved the way for artists such as himself and and fellow DJ and friend, Pinch. Ashley Road Sessions 88-94, a collaborative label release via Punch Drunk and Tectonic that came out in November, marks the 30th anniversary of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty's first single as a duo. As well as kickstarting our 2019 Truancy Volumes, we caught up with Peverelist to discuss the landmark compilation, his working working relationship with Rob Smith, producing IDLE50 and the element of learning as you go when running a label.
