When breaking down her music, Cindy Li describes it as a reflection of 'liquid air' in its many forms — at times it's fluid and weightless and at others it's mysterious and forbidding.

Under her moniker Ciel, she's released acclaimed solo EPs on labels like Peach Discs, Spectral Sound and Coastal Haze, as well as joint releases for Planet Euphorique, as part of Psychedelic Budz with D. Tiffany, and on X-Kalay with Dan Only as Cloudsteppers. When she's not creating herself, she's working to platform the buzzing underground scene in her home of Toronto through Parallel Minds, the imprint she runs in partnership with Daniel 58 and Yohei S.

She's just as accomplished a DJ as she is a producer too. Her Rinse FM residency is testament to that, not to mention her string of stellar mixes and sets for Daisychain, Melbourne Deepcast, Crack and Boiler Room, where she recently delivered her hat trick performance as part of the Toronto takeover. 

On top of her musical activities, she's an active and respected voice on subjects and issues around activism and campaigning; one example being her recent involvement, alongside DJs Norsicaa and Slowcook, in our feature about the reality and impact of Anti-Asian racism within the world of electronic music.

The latest Off-Kilter audio submission is a dive into Or:la’s expansive vision of sound - a downtempo mix of slung drums, abstract electronics and heady vocals. As an artist, Or:la navigates effortlessly through many channels of electronic expression. Here, she revisits music from her influential past with a mix that is deep, meandering and rich with texture - nailing the brief with pin-point precision - and transporting us into a dream like state.

In her own words:
 "I kept to the ‘off-kilter' brief for this one and wanted to put together a mix you can just zone out to, with less of the twists and energy shifts I usually go for in my DJ sets. A lot of the tracks mean something personal to me like the Holger Czukay one at the very end, which I first heard at uni around 2012 while watching Morvern Callar in a film studies class - the whole soundtrack really stuck with me and ended up playing a big part in me drifting away from visual arts and getting into music."

Throughout Or:la's journey as an artist, the Derry-born producer and DJ has carved out her own niche and consistently strived to escape categorisation gaining her a BBC Radio 1 Residency, an Essential mix, and DJ Mag's ‘Best DJ’ award. From running DIY parties in abandoned shops whilst studying in Liverpool, to securing some of the best club residencies around the world, Or:la's story is organic and authentic.

Staying true to her explorative propensity, Or:la 's debut album arrived via Fabric Originals in 2024 and is a testament to her ability to fluidly traverse tempos and energies. Or:la takes a similarly chameleonic approach to her DJ sets - although there's an impalpable emphasis on melody, rhythm and texture, you never really know what you might get other than a preference to follow mood over genre. Orlagh Dooley's DIY mentality extends far beyond the DJ booth - as the boss of former Deep Sea Frequency and her current label, Céad, she nurtures a community of diverse artists who share her passion for less categorizable dance music including NIKS, Primrose, Blu Terra and FAFF. The label's releases emphasize quality and creativity across a wide sonic spectrum. Since her debut EP 'UK Lonely' on Hotflush Recordings in 2017, Dooley has collaborated on a broad range of remixes, from David Holmes/Killing Eve's "Unloved" to dance floor-focused labels like Spray and Woozy. Or:la continues to run her queer-focused event series ‘La Potion', which celebrates and shines a spotlight on queer creatives. Now based back in the UK, Orlagh Dooley remains integral to the clubbing scene as a promoter and community builder, pouring her heart and soul into the place where she found her musical voice.

For ONOMIX 013 we are extremely psyched to present a mix from Tokyo based selector / wizard Gold 43. 

A solid fixture of the Tokyo underground scene for the better part of a decade now, Gold 43 cut his teeth working at the esteemed Face Records in Shibuya, where he would have first pick of the wax coming through the door. Building up an arsenal of 90's rave rarities and house gems that define his truly unique style. 

Inspired by the scene and the DJs around him he began spinning his tunes around town, eventually kicking off the party series COMBO at Illas bar in Shimokitazawa, with friend and fellow 90's house nut Jima. A club night where the two of them, plus some special guests, could spin records true to their own style.

As you would expect of someone called Lovefingers, American DJ and producer Andrew Hogge has a very special touch when it comes to making, playing and releasing emotionally involving, blissed out music. Hailing from LA, he runs the magical ESP Institute label and is also half of The Stallions as well as being a self-proclaimed hippie. That always comes through in the organic, loved up music he works with, and visual aesthetics always seem just as important to him as musical ones. 

The romantic and intoxicating mix he serves up is dedicated to Red Light Records owner Tako Reyenga and Mule Musiq affiliate Kuniyuki Takahashi. It is a loose-limbed, love-fuelled and fully horizontal delight made up of underlapping grooves, oriental motifs and gluey pads. The second half touches on more physical drums but also offers up yet more heavenly ambiance, bird song and jumbled percussion that will have you reaching for your shades and dreaming of summer.

This, of course, is the longstanding home of Rhythm Section, a party headed up by Bradley Zero. Rhythm Section is known for its loose, good-time vibes, a feeling that's mirrored in this wild, extended back-to-back session.
