The closing set at the Varden stage is always a special time; Filled with excitement, tears, hugs, and exhaustion, it marks the end of four incredible days at Monument Festival.

This year Japanese maestro Wata Igarashi stepped up and delivered a legendary closing set. A psychedelic vortex of sound thundered across the forest as the dance floor was illuminated in radiant colors and fog, with smiling faces and dancing bodies all around. 

So find your best headphones or sit down in front of your speakers, turn it up, and time travel back to the Forgotten Valley. Guided by our friend, Wata Igarashi. Enjoy.

Throughout the years, Detroit-born Berlin-based groove operator and Tresor / Globus resident Eric Cloutier has been honing and refining his palette as both a producer and a DJ. Not one to engage in dogmatic restraint, Cloutier keeps developing his vision through carefully curated selections and an equally impeccable mixing technique. Boasting the variety and precision of his releases for his own imprint Palinoia, the present mix was recorded live at The Chinese Laundry in Sydney last year. Playing the main room open-to-close, Cloutier put together this mix as an evolving story and, much like the crowd of that night which proved highly receptive to the narrative, we hope this one will resonate with you. A most exquisitely complex and deep-diving plunge into Cloutier’s shape-shifting headspace, alternating heavyweight punch and dubbed-out minimalism with swashes of textured membranes and faux-organic, modular-like intricacies, this mix is as elusively impossible to pigeonhole as it proves sophisticated in its design.

DJ Sodeyama’s murky alias The People in Fog is up next for a very special number. The DJ/producer has been active since the 90s, reshaping his home city, extensively touring the globe, releasing music, founding record labels (Arpa) and toying with different incarnations of his palette under a few different names. The People In Fog is one such project, founded a decade ago as license to lean into his more disco and house inclinations, a means of connecting with a lighter penchant for Chicago-style and Balearic rhythms. It’s a manifestation that’s given the world several first-rate releases like debut album A Ray of Light (2013), Album: 1977 (2021) and this year’s Too Much Knobs and Cables. His whistle-stop promo tour of Japan for that latest release has been whipping up plenty of shifting grooves and phase distortions, and delivering that fresh take on sound to IRL crowds in his native land. For the rest of us, the nine-tracker’s a perfect source for summer anthems: a fuzzy, analog patchwork of synths and low-end bass. Bassiani Podcast 273 takes all of this and turns up the heat, The People In Fog’s deep reverence for underground sounds is here for a two-hour mash up of grimy percussions and sensuous urban sounds. This year he joins us once again on December 27th for 20 Years Of The Electric Chair....

„The craze about the music...“
...the man called Prosumer is besotted with it. Since Achim Brandenburg heartily grabbed the microphone under this moniker in 2005 for Frankfurt’s then undisputed Label Playhouse, he showed that lasciviousness, a fever for Chicago’s Jack flavour and consciousness of tradition aren’t necessarily bound to a time and a place. Vision, passion and knowledge make Prosumer a guardian of house music history and one of the formative artists, influential DJs and important producers of our days.
While deriving his name from Alvin Toffler’s techno sci-fi-bible The Third Wave (producing and consuming at the same time), Prosumer lives up to his name. With more than a decade of Hard-Wax-Record-Store-enculturation on the clock (first in Saarbrucken, then Berlin), he spent countless nights in clubs, days looking for music and years refining his art and becoming in line with the “big three”. This is not a reference to Detroit’s car companies, but the city’s musical heritage that – together with the Big Apple and the Windy city – laid the foundation for techno and house builds with the Big Apple and the Windy City.
Prosumer oscillates between these poles. That holds true for his productions, which are affected by references and historical vertexes, but never feel to be out of time or place. An album with Murat Tepeli and collaborations with Tama Sumo expand his discography for labels like the aforementioned Playhouse, Running Back or Swayzak’s 240 Volts. On the other hand – and that might be far more important – this is exemplary for his DJ work since the mid-nineties. Prosumer connects the tracks and songs of this music’s golden age with the worthwhile pieces and developments of today. Accordingly to that special feeling which is so hard to couch, he gets engaged in it from tip to toe – and so does his audience. Proved by his mission as one of the residents in Berlin’s influential club institution, on his official mix CD for that place that describes his spectrum of sound perfectly and by this certain magic that travels with and in him everywhere.

After starting the mini Dekmantel Selectors podcast series last year, we couldn’t resist continuing it with artists from this year's line-up. In the next couple of months, we will release 5 podcasts by some of our favourite artists. This year’s podcast theme is all about 'another side of me', wherein the artists show another side of theirselves.

Next on is Izabel Caligiore, who runs the impeccable Lullabies For Insomniacs record label and blog. LFI emerged as a radio show on Melbourne’s 106. 7 PBS FM but has found a new home on Red Light Radio after she relocated to Amsterdam. Both the imprint and the online portal show her deep love for unearthed electronics, modern classical gems and ambient music. 

For the 15th mix on these series, Izabel took some time to prepare a mix where she shows another side of herself. "This mix is about intensity and challenges. I recorded it in the confinements of my living room and I enjoyed every minute, although I'm not sure my neighbours did. Playing with and around the beat."
