Enter the wormhole with one of the techno artists we're most excited about in 2025.

Born in Osaka and now based in Tokyo, DJ MARIA. joins a decorated lineage of Japan's psychedelic elite, cut from a similarly explorative cloth as Wata Igarashi, Haruka and esoteric icons ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U and DJ Nobu. This nerdy sanctum of deep techno is a notoriously hard world to break into: only the very best make the grade. DJ MARIA.'s head-spinning sets emphasise why she's already part of the club firmament at home, and is now in the midst of a global breakthrough.

Her trademark is tapestries of acid, trance and techno that strike a perfect balance between vibrancy, impact and restraint. She bit the bug through a teenage discovery of DVDs showing legendary psytrance raves like Solstice and Vision Quest, yet it wasn't until 2014 that she started DJing, balancing gigs with shifts at Tokyo's Face Records and, as of late, motherhood.

Today, as well as producing and touring venues such as FOLD and Bassiani, she helps run two boutique forest festivals—Moment and Transcendence—both of which play a big part in upholding Japan's storied techno tradition. DJ MARIA. has reached these heights principally because of her exceptional talent as a DJ, which is on full display on this week's RA Podcast.

The two-hour mix is pure manna for psychedelic techno heads, though we're confident the depth of feeling, subtle pacing and seamless stitching will lure in fans from across the electronic spectrum. RA.971 is a total treasure—the latest wow moment from an artist destined to have a career littered with them.

For our latest Bleep Mix instalment, Sandwell District come through with a hefty programming of dark rollers fulfilling that promise of reinvigorated purpose they mentioned before: “Having a good time”. And with a wealth of exclusive unheard material it’s hard to refute the mission statement. Dropping straight into the cavernous environs of an unreleased Regis side Frosty Jack’s, the selection rides a restrained line building tension through a number of Nastia Reigel tracks deployed with utmost precision before upping its stride with Luke Slater’s Planetary Assault Systems and quickly landing first peak from The Wizard himself, with Jeff Mills' slamming ‘93 cut Step to Enchantment (Stringent). Taking in a track from their comrade Surgeon’s forthcoming album, as well as the simmering acid of their own tune Hidden, Sandwell District bring it back round full circle via two further unreleased reworks of heroes Meat Beat Manifesto providing a breakbeat singed rupture to close out the proceedings with the vocal snatches of MBM’s Helter Skelter summing it all up really: “It's in my brain now. This is it!”

Andreas Baumecker launched his DJ career in the early 90s, a Frankfurt native coming of age in the halcyon days of his country’s reunification. His first stop was the city’s storied and centrally located Romantica, then its affiliate Intimbar where reps from house label Playhouse picked him up for buying duties at record store Delirium. After an uptick in local bookings, he made a brief stop in Mannheim for more of the same before moving to Berlin in 2004, where a recently opened Panorama Bar scouted him as resident and offered him the role of in-house booker for its Berghain operations. As word got out and the city started to draw larger crowds he became a fundamental force in crafting the club’s story. Hesitant to define the upstairs-downstairs split as house and techno, he practices his preachings through an approach that embraces a range of different sounds. ‘Surprise is important’ and his 25,000 strong vinyl collection lends a hand in the process, an assemblage that oscillates between disco, house, electro, techno, breakbeat and pop; the key is to capture the spirit of a crowd. This strategy has borne not only his label Freundinnen (put on hiatus in 2007, relaunched in 2023), but a lasting collaboration with sparring partner Sam Barker as half or Barker and Baumecker (four 12” records and two albums on his alma mater’s imprint Ostgut Ton to prove it). nd_baumecker deals in all things funky and uplifting, a thread of life-affirming melodies and historically literate beats that drive seamlessly forward. Bassiani Podcast 255 alludes to his well stocked portfolio of references, with hints of disco and balearic house, it's more of what his fans know and love to usher in the warmer months; this latest episode is full of spacey tenor, refreshing and gently rolling, breezy chill-out expertly compiled by this fabled German veteran.

If you checked out our show on BBC Radio 1 last month you may have noticed something curious about the tracklist for Nina Kraviz's guest mix: eight of the 17 cuts she selected were by Bjarki. Kraviz used the mix to showcase the upcoming releases on her label Trip, and since it launched last year, Bjarki has emerged as its brightest talent. So far we've had just a taste of the Icelandic artist's style. His recent EP, Arthur And Intergalactic Whales, featured the wonderfully mindless "I Wanna Go Bang," which is shaping up to be one of the biggest techno tracks of 2015, and the more subtle but no less powerful "Orange Juice Man." His tracks for the Trip compilations De Niro Is Concerned and The Deviant Octopus were more functional, but "Revolution" and "Polygon Pink Toast" were both quietly unique. As strong as Bjarki's music has been so far though, it's his vast quantity of unreleased tracks that confirms just how bright his future could be. A brief biography on his Facebook page describes him as "a very low profile, stay-at-home audiophile," and below Bjarki says that it's a total necessity for him to bang tracks out quickly. This frees him to shoot off in many different directions while maintaining the rock-solid low-end that's become one of his trademarks. 

You'll see what we mean on RA.484. The mix is exclusively made up of unreleased Bjarki tracks, some of which will come out on Trip, some of which will never be released. The strikingly diverse hour takes in jacking, Chicago-influenced cuts, deadly serious deep techno, and a moment of hardcore revivalism that, like Bjarki himself, we're sure you'll be hearing more of. 


What have you been up to recently? 

We have been working on a music video for "I Wanna Go Bang." Very exited to see the final outcome. 

How and where was the mix recorded? 

In my basement in Copenhagen, where most of the tracks were made. 

Tell us about the idea behind the mix. 

It's a selection of tracks from earlier this year. All unreleased, some will be out on Trip and others might never see a release, who knows. I don't think all my music needs to be released. Sharing it with my Trip family members and see them playing it live is enough. 

The opening track in the mix is something that got me inspired after talking to a friend who is a ballet dancer. She told me about the serious steps ballerinas can go through. It sounded like a lot of pain and tears. I ended up writing a short fiction about a traumatised ballerina. She is in deep water, almost drowning, building up her strength and control as her movements are slow, struggling to dance her way up to the surface to breath. 

Do you tend to produce quickly? The volume of unreleased music in the mix would suggest so. 

Yeah I make music quite quickly. It's just like a photo, a moment of excitement that I capture and if I like it, it's done and I bounce it. Sometimes I make music right before a show and then just play it. Every time I spend too much time on it I end up getting really bored and lose the feeling. 

Tell us about the techno scene in Iceland. 

There has always been a lot of music coming from Iceland. There aren't many clubs in Reykjavik, mostly bars. There is one venue that has clubbing standards called Paloma, where we did our first Trip party. Maybe with the trip label we generated a buzz in the scene. Our cave party earlier this summer and my latest release caught a lot of attention.

What are you up to next? 

Learning more about composition, and working with real musicians. It's seems like a right moment for a deeper musical knowledge. I really need it to be able to create the music I want. So studying is definitely up next.

The music Aurora Halal creates is informed by many different disciplines. She is a producer, but also a videographer and visual artist who has worked on films about modular synth godfather Morton Subotnick amongst others. She is also the force behind Brooklyn’s Mutual Dreaming party series as well as the Sustain-Release festival. In just a couple of years she has cooked up an expressive and experimental techno sound—solo and with the likes of Ital—on labels such as Lovers Rock and her own Mutal Dreaming Recordings. Oppressive and foggy, her distorted, imperfect sounds made up of heavy drums and scurrying synths have taken her to plenty of remarkable live gigs all over the world. Now she steps up to our mix series with equal aplomb.
