Each new crisis makes us worry until we start worrying about the next one. When something goes wrong, we are told that the way to prevent further crises is through better technology, more laws, and bigger bureaucracy. How to protect ourselves from the threat of terrorism? Homeland security, full body scanners, further sacrifice of individual freedom. How to counteract exploding costs in health care? Tax hikes, rationalization, better genetic markers. One idea is absent from these lists: risk-savvy citizens. And there is a reason for that. Many experts have concluded that people are basically hopeless when it comes to risk and, like a child who needs a parent, require continuous “nudging." Against this pessimistic view, I will argue that instead of being the solution, experts are often part of the problem, and that everyone can learn to deal with risk and uncertainty on their own. A democracy needs risk-savvy citizens who cannot be easily frightened into surrendering their money, their welfare, and their liberty. Travelling through raw uptempo grooves, pulsing deep house, acid explorations and straight hard slapping techno, the two take it everywhere and back again - holding an enthused party in the palm of their hands.

While the sounds of this raucous crowd was not recorded, if you listen closely you can feel the palpable energy as the lightly audible noise of jubilated dancers come through the stylus. Jammed and hot from an hour in and thick til close, this is audio proof of the way two very perceptive DJs can grab hold and take you to higher places.

An Australian DJ and co-founder of the legendary Melbourne Deepcast, Myles Mac has been a cornerstone of Naarm's underground music scene for over 15 years. A tastemaker and curator, he’s known for hosting iconic house music events through his MDC, Lost Weekend, and Made in the Shade parties, consistently bringing some of the genre’s biggest names to the Australian dancefloors. His deep, eclectic selections have earned him a reputation not only in Australia but also internationally, regularly performing in cities like Berlin, New York, London, and Tokyo.

Whether solo or with long-time collaborators DJ Possum and DJ Camov (as Project 95), Myles’ dynamic, ever-expanding sound has made its mark on mixes for platforms like Truants, Trushmix, For Home Use Only, c-, and, of course, his home base, Melbourne Deepcast.

"Deon Jamar is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family.

Coming from a household where his father was a DJ, turntables and records were always around. 

It was in his discovery of Detroit's underground where he found the inspiration to follow in his father's footsteps.

 

Deon’s DJ career began in 2015 as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase "Bluecollar Gentleman". 

During this time he would also begin working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series and also working behind the scenes for the Sound Signature record label. This work would culminate in a co-curation role for the DJ Kicks compilation “Detroit Forward” (K7 Records) where he enlisted hometown artists to represent the progressive sounds of today. His track, 

"North End Funk", was selected to join the mix, making his production credit debut..


Aside from just playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the "Healin' Session" party series and the music and art exhibition, "Black Music".


Black Music has since evolved into the home for Deon's original productions. 

Launching the label with his debut album, “Altars”."
