Our next Mixed By comes from Toronto-based DJ, producer, and community organiser: Ciel. You might recognise the name Ciel via her Discwoman affiliation, or you might have read all about her on Resident Advisor’s Breaking Through. You might have listened to her record released on Shanti Celeste’s Peach Disc last year. You might have heard about her inclusivity and safer spaces work in Toronto through her projects Work In Progress and It’s Not U It’s Me. Or else, you might have simply just seen her name plastered on bills all across Europe and North America non-stop this summer. 

The mix she kindly recorded for us, self-titled “My House Is Prog House”, is an hour or so of pleasantly tuneful yet decisively hard-hitting rave music. It’s an elated flurry of uplifting trancey keys, feel-good euro-dance vocals, shuffley breaks and hard-house basslines, all sandwiched between a dramatically poignant climax at open and close. 

Listen to the mix whilst reading Ciel’s reflection on touring, promoting and producing over the past year… then dance, shed a singular tear doused in pure euphoria, and dance even harder.

Back in 2016, Skee Mask and Zenker Brothers spontaneously attempted to play together at an afterparty in Prague, but after ten minutes the electricity failed. Two years later they finally had the opportunity to play a joint extended set for the first time - at Unsound Kraków 2018. The three DJs closed Saturday night in Hotel Forum with an expansive set building on adventurous forms of techno, jungle and broken beat, combining the collective interests of Ilian Tape. The set kicked off at 4am in the Ball Room.

Stenny is an essential producer in driving forward the sound of Ilian Tape. He has remained loyal to Ilian’s sonic aesthetic while carving his own musical path with incredible finesse. We can confirm, having seen him play at Herrensauna in Tresor and the Backdrop party in Newcastle’s Cosmic Ballroom, that his DJ sets are as exceptional as the records he releases. A versatile, adventurous and tough approach allow for constant forward momentum and a truly unrelenting energy on the dancefloor. Though the beats may be broken, his flow is anything but. His Truancy Volume proves just that - it is gripping at every turn with the energy and flare he channels into the set going some way to demonstrate his almighty capabilities when at the helm of the party. From playing football in the parks of his hometown Turin, to touring the world’s most respected clubs from his new home in Munich, his fast paced ascent is hard earned and well deserved.

One year has gone since my last DJ gig or dance floor action. What started as a mixtape project a few months into the pandemic last year, now turned into 𝙖 248 𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠. While recording the third and final chapter of this mixtape trilogy and intrigued by the backgrounds and protagonists of the records, I began researching and got into the idea of a book version, where 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 about the mixtape’s tracks are alternated with a selection of favorite 𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬𝙨 from my archive as a music journalist - printed on paper to safeguard from digital expiration - plus a few brand new 𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙮𝙨. The entirety offers a unique and utterly personal perspective on 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘, 𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙗 𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙮𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜. 

Built on 20 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙅𝙞𝙣𝙜 and almost a decade as a 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧 and fully conceived in my own world, this book feels like homecoming. After happily having worked for a number of projects and media, it marks a move towards independent authorship and an expression of my leitmotiv as a 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧.
