Beige’s mix is an amalgam of ecclesiastical breaks and gospel house delivered with intensity and soul power like only they can do. ARTIST STATEMENT:
In the strictest sense, Amen! Vol. 1 is the result of more than a year’s worth of obsessive brainstorming, digging, planning, arranging, re-arranging, and countless discarded takes. And in another sense, this mixtape has been in the works for the six years since I started DJing, the ten years since my baptism as a teenage club rat, and for my entire life, which for better or for worse has been shaped by The Church and church music since birth. 

My mother was a promiscuously Christian divinity school dropout who pushed my family through a run of increasingly conservative churches: Unitarian, Episcopal, Baptist, Presbytarian, Charismatic-Evangelical, and probably a few others I forget. My fathers family on the other hand were career scientists and committed atheists who also all happened to sing in church choirs for fun. I cannot remember a time when Beethoven, Bach, folk hymns, old negro spirituals and gospel were not playing in my house, day in and day out. 

Cutting ties with both family and organized religion in my early teens left a void of community and belonging that wouldn’t start to be filled until my first experiences with clubbing (sometimes with drugs, sometimes without) years later. And when I started collecting records years after that, I gravitated heavily towards any music incorporating the familiar imagery, themes, musical motifs and language of church (especially Liberation Theology) which remained kind of bittersweetly comforting long after I stopped trying to believe. This might sound heretical, but over the last several years “gospel” has become much more of a feeling to me than a genre or even a sound. As far as I’m concerned, the rave, the club, the congregation, the choir, are only different ways to experience a many-sided mystery. 

For this project, I wanted to challenge myself to imagine going beyond just using a little soulful house to end the night or the mix on an uplifting note, and instead program a fantasy “gospel rave” for a thousand of my closest friends dancing in a field on a moonless night. How would I do my best to deliver a powerful, meaningful, salvatory collective experience from midnight until sunrise? Amen Vol. 1 is a snapshot of that imaginary night. 

The need to use contrasting peaks and troughs to create a sense of narrative for your audience includes emotional or spiritual contrast just as much as it does changes in BPM or a kick pattern.  So, it was important for me to try exceeding simply the emotions associated with “praise” music (like joy) because encountering the truly divine should also inspire fear and awe. Disregarding genre as much as possible, each piece of music was chosen for the sensation or sentimental meaning it inspires for me personally: you probably wouldn’t call most of them “rave tracks”, and plenty aren’t explicitly religious at all. Finally, of course I had to make sure that Detroit and Chicago were properly (but not exclusively, that’s for another mix) represented in the tracklist. Where I’ve ended up, grounded by a repeating classic “anchor track” for each side, is an attempt to simulate Genesis and Revelation, the Good News and the Flood, the dark night of the soul and the moment of salvation–whatever those might mean for you. Can I get a witness?

Primarily manifested live at UFO CAMP festival 2024, in Guanajuato Mexico, on May 18 2024 as the vibrant golden hour solarity melted into dusk, further and further into the celestial embrace of night. Some sonics were added into this mix later on by me for deep listenability at home :)

"I usually have some difficulty playing alone in my room, but this time I was in a mood to to test new things. I used some new stuff that I found recently. Almost all the tracks, I haven't yet played on the dance floor. Six of them are from Brazilian producers, like Guilherrrrmo, Bad Mix, L_cio ft. Massumi, Manu Villas, Manara and Caio Haar. Cashu - São Paulo, Brazil

It’s that time of the year again! We will head off to the the other side of the world on the 3rd and 4th of March for the second edition of Dekmantel Festival São Paulo. As a warm-up, we continue our mini podcast series and kick off with Brazil’s local hero and best kept secret: Cashu.

Whilst having her background in architecture, Cashu started off her career within music by organizing street parties in collaboration with the VOODOOHOP collective in downtown São Paulo. Not much later, the Mamba Negra parties arized as a result of these parties and Cashu finds herself being a resident nowadays too. Next to that, Cashu is also a regular at the CAPSLOCK events and is an active figure within street and social movements like Ravetalização and Parque Augusta.

Music-wise it's fair to say that Cashu is one of Brazil's most exciting DJ's at the moment. A blend of techno, house and Afro-Brazilian mixed with acid and a heavily mysterious vibe is what defines her. Proof is this brilliant mix for us where she illustrates exactly that over the cours of one hour. Hear it for yourself, you will not be disappointed - we promise.

“She is rearranging molecules in the air” was how Shane aka. Kiernan Laveaux‘s mixing style was once described to us by her In Training co-founder, Father of Two. Anyone who has been lucky to catch one of her mesmerising sets over the years across North America, in Berlin, or more recently during a tour in Europe this spring, will know exactly how accurate that description is. Kiernan Laveaux is one of the founding members of In Training, a queer party and collective which made its roots in Cleveland, Ohio in 2014. Over the course of a few years, by throwing their own parties in their small, industralised city In Training became part of the fabric of North America’s queer dance music underground. Shane is now based in Pittsburgh and, alongside In Training, holds strong links to the collectives & event series of Heaven is in You and Motherbeat, as well as other parties and groups based around the globe . One thing you become acutely aware of when listening to Shane play, or to her mixes, is that an intrinsic part of what she does is to create a narrative with the music that she plays.

resident and co-initiator of mamba negra, the... best party i've ever been to/played? in são paulo: wild, no-frills, proactively inclusive (poc trans sisters get in free), amazing line-ups and spaces, mind-blowing performances.  cashu is a key piece of this beautiful mosaic, a versartile, banging dj that can make the rave go bananas while never forgetting to nurture the community that makes it all worthwhile. mamba negra is also home of teto preto, one of my fav bands out there today - you should check them out if you don't know them yet. brazil is simply full of  incredible artists surviving and resisting and performing actual alchemy within an opressive regime that pretty much just wants them silent (but that's not gonna happen thankfully). this mix is a wionderful dip in a sea of ravey progressions, broken drum patterns, percussive futurism and a whole lotta LOVE. cashu para sempre <3
