Lena Willikens doesn’t play the hits. When she’s behind the decks, even her biggest fans often have no idea exactly what she’s playing, and that’s part of the magic. Like all DJs, Willikens of course has a passion for records, but she’s also after something bigger, something that’s truly transportive for those on the dancefloor.

Born and raised in Germany, Willikens first honed her unique approach during a long residency at Düsseldorf’s beloved Salon des Amateurs. These days, however, she’s based in Amsterdam, where her transportative impulses have been plugged into a variety of outlets with a global reach. On the radio, she pilots the monthly Lightning Conductor program on NTS. On record, she recently curated the fifth installment of Dekmantel’s acclaimed Selectors compilation series, and she’s also been tapped to remix the likes of Lena Platonos, S U R V I V E, rRoxymore, Simian Mobile Disco and Ana Helder, amongst others. On stage, Willikens works with artist Sarah Szczesny on Phantom Kino Ballett, an immersive audio-visual performance art project that defies routine explanation.

Still, it’s in the DJ booth where Willikens continues to make the biggest impact. Whether she’s playing alone or in tandem with fellow sonic explorer and Salon des Amateurs alum Vladimir Ivkovic, Willikens nimbly navigates electronic music’s darkest and most bizarre corners, sampling different temperatures, different moods and a dollop of chaos, just to keep things interesting. And although she herself doesn’t always know the final destination, when Willikens is at the helm, there’s no question that the journey is bound to be thrilling.

Who/what currently inspires you music-wise that has nothing to do with music?

Water and light mostly 

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Too many faves. Some heavy hitters off the top are Umami/Echo Flats/Heavenly/Community Chest. They are %100 in it for the experience. Community Chest is a joint force crew of about 7 great crews from Sydney – It’s kinda like when the power rangers come together to make that big robot fighter guy

What was your best moment at the supermarket?

They were playing Bill Withers in a Woollies once and it got me

What is your most recent favorite DJ mix and why?

Max D – Indie Rock on C- was maybe the last one that got me good. Max D only plays by Max D’s rules

NYC scene figurehead and podcast contributor Ex Wiish keeps things horizontal with a 45-minute exercise in total immersion. 

We're gassed to have the 29 Speedway founder on board for this one. Something of a luminary in the Big Apple scene, the sound artist and composer has grown increasingly experimental with age, culminating in  a widescreen debut for Anthony Naples' Incienso label.

Where that album oscillated between windswept arrangements, lacerating IDM and downbeat styles, his mix taps into the same vein of transcendent, meditative experimentalism.

New York trio Purelink give us an exclusive peek of what they have planned for the upcoming summer live music season in this weekend’s Sunday Mix. As the creators of Signs, one of the best ambient and dub techno albums of last year, their 80-minute mix shows off their advanced ears for soundscapes and texture, while adding on head-nodding grooves and dubby four-to-the-floor beats.

It’s as dancefloor suitable as it is Sunday sofa ready. “This new year has mostly been spent in our studio prepping new music and live set ideas,” they say. “A lot of these songs reflect the dancier side we’ve been inspired by lately. Hope to see you on a dancefloor soon.”

"If a record is falling apart at the seams, I'll probably like it." Recorded live at Houghton 2024, our latest Playing Favourites episode sees the London artist discussing the beautiful leftfield music that's soundtracked his life.

British DJ and producer Call Super brings some colour to the depths of winter with this week's RA Exchange. The multifaceted artist has released music on Houndstooth, Hessle Audio, fabric, Dekmantel and the label he co-runs with Parris, can you feel the sun, becoming known for a deep yet always party-ready sound that combines house, UK funky, tech house and plenty more besides.

In this interview, recorded at last year's Houghton Festival, he talks to RA's managing editor, Carlos Hawthorn,  as part of our flagship live series, Playing Favourites. Among his choices are the music he listened to as a child; the record that inspired his passion for DJing; an artist who changed his perspective on music at large; and more practical songs he deploys in sets to refresh a crowd. The territory he covers is huge, from tech house and acid house to contemporary classical, experimental leftfield, abstract percussion and choral music.
