We’re very excited to present the first Live & Direct of 2023, courtesy of our Pittsburgh-based residents Honcho. 

This one was recorded live at Nowadays on the first weekend of January, to a room of smiling faces for whom the festive nature of the new year had clearly not worn off. It's two hours of the crew in pure form, with all three DJs locked into the same irresistible groove. George, Aaron and Clark have a knack for uniting their own unique styles to present a cohesive vision of chugging, sexy house music, and here it is on full display. Big thanks to Honcho for letting us share this with the world!

In addition to the killer music from both Honcho and Father Dukes, this night was especially memorable thanks to everyone in attendance contributing to the friendly and joyful vibe, from the dancers to the staff and everyone in between. A big thanks is due to you all as well!

Finn Johannsen is a DJ and writer for numerous print and web publications. He also co-runs the label Macro Recordings, and is an impresario at the clubs Paloma and Monarch.  He lives in Berlin.

Joey Anderson remains committed to the deep rooted sensibilities of House music, it's very much in his DNA - drawing upon influences from the underground of New York city. Over the years he has released some of the most influential records in the genre - EP's on the likes of Latency, Syncrophone Recordings and Deconstruct - albums on the likes of Dekmantel and Avenue 66.

This month marks the release of a new album on Deeptrax.

His sound has always been cemented in a deep, philosophical energy. It's music as much for listening, ambience and mood as it is the dancefloor.

Over the years his music has gone on to reach critical acclaim and gained international recognition but it is his home city and the origins of the musical culture from which he draws strength, not the hype or social media circus.

Not one to dabble in eccentricities his music is stripped back, utilising uniquely programmed machinery to create delicate textures and weird dusty tones which often lead to a unique transcendence.

Joey is an artist we've been keen to feature in this series for a long time now and the result is just as special as we could have imagined...

This RA Podcast is a celebration of all things Moodymann, and by extension, Detroit. The long-time DJ and producer Dez Andrés calls Moodymann his "big brother," and here pays tribute to the true expanse of Kenny Dixon Jr's music, from core house cuts to rambling funk jams to remixes of artists like Dua Lipa and Solomun, which really hammers home how important Moodymann is on dance music from across the world and across genres.

Andrés himself is also a legend. Active in Detroit since the '90s, he's a dance music Renaissance man, known for incredible hip-hop beats, disco and house, including massive hits like "New 4 U," one of the last decade's biggest dance music hits and RA's favourite track of 2012. His archive of records and mixes are essential listening for any house music or hip-hop fan, and he represents that distinct blend of influences and genres that defines Detroit—the same thing you can hear in this all-Moodymann mix.

Soul Clap ft. Sha-Lor Live at House of EFUNK Detroit

Last May, we invited Leon Vynehall to play a rare 'open to close' set at Honey Soundsystem. There are not many selectors that we can trust to not only DEBUT themselves at a HSS party but also take on a room entirely to themselves. His set exceed our expectations and the recording ACTUALLY came out.

Honey fans know we don't release many live-recordings, but when we do they often have a life of their own (see Jennifer Cardini at Burning Man, Silent Servant at Holy Cow, Black Madonna at Deviants, Doc Sleep at the 9 Year Anniversary)

This set has been on repeat since that May 26th night and after some serious cajoling, Vynehall agreed to release the first couple of hours. Vynehall does not really release live mixes so we know how special this is and thank him for letting us go with it.

The set went on for another 3.5 hours but included some material Vynehall can't have out in the world yet. So... here is an exceptionally good 3.5 hours at one of our traditional Sunday night, holiday weekend, Honey Soundsystem parties in San Francisco.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I’m a DJ, a black queer woman, and a music lover. My DJ bio central theme is ‘a selectress with no inhibitions’ because if a song makes me feel something specific then I will play it for other people to see if it elicits the same feeling in them. I seek to keep everything I do playful yet intentional.

Q. How long have you been involved in the NY music scene?
A. I’ve been performing in NYC as a DJ since the spring of 2018 and moved here in the fall of that year. So it’s been 1 year and 9 months of being based here. I always had a hunch I’d enjoy living in Brooklyn and I do.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix has a lot of nostalgic sounds and emotional vocal tracks on it.  It’s a very warm and personal mix. It’s a mix of voices and sounds for those who find themselves feeling lonely or trapped during this quarantine. This is the kind of music I would play for me and a good friend chilling at my home: tribal rhythms, soundscapes, 90’s boom bap, funk, and tributes to legends like Pharoah Sanders & Manu Dibango. I feel it conjures up a very groovy loving place to go to in your mind. Somewhere you can set your worries down & boogie.

As another (rather unusual) year comes to an end, we close off our 2020 Mix Series with a sensational hour-long recording from one of the UK’s finest electronic music producers - Daniel Avery.

Daniel’s mix, however, is far from the ordinary. We'll let him explain in his own words below.

"The act of DJing feels like it exists on another planet at the moment but, unemployment aside, I feel fortunate to have closed my eyes this year,” Avery explains. “I’ve found a real solace in my metal box down by the water, the doors of which seemed to have been locked from the outside. In a good way. It’s all meant that the pile of new music is bigger than ever and, when asked to make a mix for my favourite dance emporium Phonica, I had the opportunity to do something different. So, to round off the slow-motion blur of 2020, here is a mixtape made up of new and exclusive stuff: unheard demos, versions, live jams and studio experiments. Most of it was made for the club.
