Martyn’s music transcends the constraints of genre… 

Pick a track from his extensive back catalogue and you’ll be sure to hear influences from Drum ’n’ Bass, Garage, Detroit, Chicago or Dubstep - the latter of which Martyn was probably known best for having been influential in the evolution of the “Post-Dubstep” sound in London that was so closely connected with institutions like Plastic People and FWD>.   

This broad collection of influences has created a sound that is distinctively, Martyn, and as an extension of that, a sound that is very much associated with his own label, 3024. It has also found it’s way on to the best labels across the electronic landscape, including Ninja Tune, Warp, Hyperdub, Brainfeeder and Ostgut Ton to name a few.  

His ability as a DJ runs parallel to his achievements as a producer, having secured his place in fabric history over 10 years ago with his contribution to our fabric CD series. A perfect snapshot of a place in time with music from Kode9, Actress, Zomby, Joy Orbison and lot’s more.

004 - Martyn - fabric podcast

Welsh artist Kelly Lee Owens has a special grasp on techno. She can make it sound wild and naturalistic, like wind blowing through a dense forest, or make it feel cold and sleek, like a gleaming slab of chrome. Either way, though, it's always full of emotion, thanks to the intricate textures and distinctive tones of her voice. You might even say she takes a singer-songwriter approach to techno, but that doesn't mean her music isn't suited for the dance floor.

Her most recent album, <a href=/reviews/34853 target="_blank"><i>LP.8</i></a>, marks a step away from the dance floor, however, and into a place a little more dark, more unpredictable. It's also some of her most gorgeous work, centering around "Anadlu," an eight-minute cut that feels perfectly pitched between ambient and techno, with heavy, lumbering drums but an otherwise lightweight, almost wispy feel.
 Owens' RA Podcast occupies this zone almost perfectly. Beginning with 11th century music from Hildegard von Bingen, it ties all sorts of traditions together, from Pan Sonic to Throbbing Gristle to Marco Shuttle to Oneohtrix Point Never & Rosalía. It floats, it accelerates, it loops and doubles back in on itself, an hour of gripping electronics from one of techno's most distinctive voices.

Bringing the trippy Miami heat to the series is Coffintexts, one of the city’s hidden gems. 

She first made her debut in 2017 and has since released on international platforms such as Femme Culture, Jezebel and Club Qu - the latter featuring a remix from the local legend Danny Daze. 

Her tour dates include Miami’s III Points festival, Detroit’s Where Are My Keys, supporting Vegyn as well as playing for the likes of Ominidisc, Autonomy, and Jezebel and her previous mixes have seen her on platforms such as NAAFI, Movement Radio and Club Qu’s famed lockdown series. 

With an upcoming solo EP in the works as well as more collaborative releases with artists from the Miami scene, we’re super excited to have Coffintexts on 909. 

Speaking about the mix, Coffintext says, "I put together a mix inspired by what I've been listening to in the past month. The tracks I chose to include have been an influence for my upcoming solo EP that I'm currently working on. I also added a couple unreleased tracks in there from a separate joint EP with my friends. This mix was recorded live at a party in Miami. Hope you all enjoy it!”

Don't let @solid_blake's diminutive stature fool you: she plays with a ferocity and precision that flips Europe's most tasteful dance floors inside out. Born in Glasgow but operating out of Copenhagen, she was a founding member of the Apeiron Crew DJ collective, has produced as Historical Repeater with Ctrls and often plays with Mama Snake as she did at our own festival a few years ago. Her Rinse FM radio show is always packed with new sounds that have you desperate to find out more, as is this week's mix. 

It's built on bold, body-shaking rhythms that are elastic and acrobatic. They're loose and roomy to start before the kinetic energy builds through jungle cuts, thumping deep techno and unhinged club music. Though squarely aimed at the dance floor, these selections are detailed with freaky monologues or wild vocalisations that bring them to life outside the club. They're both deep but lively and run through with a subtle sense of party-starting fun.

This is also my relationship with the AI compilations, I always saw them as a benchmark in electronic music which was "danceable" but also you could sit still and be immersed in it, listening loud on headphones.
