Alexandra Onofrei known as Lexia Majora is a Romanian DJ based in Exeter UK, where she’s also doing her PhD (at the University of Exeter). Her research looks at the rominimal community and the rominimal genre, exploring questions of identity in this group. As a DJ, Lexia Majora played warm up sets for artists such as Daniel Avery, Mall Grab and Peach. She enjoys playing hard groove and Berlin techno, but also rominimal as this helps her to stay connected to her Romanian roots.

This mix contains some of Lexia Majora’s favourite rominimal tunes, and explores her love for wonky sounds as well as jazzy grooves and classical music.

In September 2022, Clark had the privilege of playing the Grove at Sustain Release, a yearly festival held in upstate New York.  Fresh off of Honcho Campout, the beautiful stage tucked away in the woods felt like home. Check out this two hour set of moody, atmosphere techno and jacking house.

Honcho Podcast Series 113 - Clark Price Live at Sustain Release

There are DJs, then there are DJs who capture—and live—a moment in dance music's evolution. Born in Los Angeles, but based in New York for the better half of a decade, Akua has established herself as the latter, an important voice in the North American techno scene. Akua's DJing practice is fueled by her research in the '90s techno music archive, with a special interest in the history and roots of techno within America. 

Akua's sets are raw extensions of the foundations laid by the pioneers of '90s U.S. techno. Most prominently, the work and influence of DJs like Jeff Mills, Claude Young and Jay Denham can all be heard across her mixes, as well as the spirit of Underground Resistance. Her interest in fast-paced techno comes from these traditions as well as own individualist streak—while there's no shortage of DJs who play high-BPM techno, you won't hear anyone else play it quite like she does.

Her old-school meets new-school sound has catapulted her from the New York underground into the European techno circuit, where recent gigs have seen her perform at dance music institutions like Berghain and Dekmantel. Akua's RA Podcast is her in full-throttle mode, featuring all the stripped-down, hypnotic groove of early techno aside rushes of searing acid, carefully speeding up until closing at a healthy sprint.

Mala Junta rabble rousers DJ Tool and D.Dan are up next for Zenaari Mix 010, but leave your biases at the door because this isn’t their usual high-speed mischief. In the vein of Zenaari’s hallmark off-kilter electronics the Berlin based pair are here instead to take you on a journey within. This one’s less for warehouse raving, more for solo spiritual contemplation: an invitation to probe the subconscious and transcend material experience. It’s a thorough exploration of their ambient predilections that range from featherlight textures to faded melodies that lilt like waves on a metaphysical shore. This liminal collage of gentle lullabies and acoustic murmurs is soft and a touch plaintive, but warm and loving all the same. Invoking everything from glitchy IDM to ballads that bend towards the strange and pineal, a technicolor dream sequence conjured up by this offbeat techno double-act.

Championing a sound both highly energetic and firmly contemporary, the American DJ and producer has us working out with every bar. From strapping 4x4 charges to gut-churning brain intruders, onto experimental-leaning glides and further esoteric drifts, Juana’s dance floor hoodoo is as bewitching as it is deadly. Spanning harsh industrial, rough-hewn proto-techno and lo-slung machine funk, her RYC mix ticks all the boxes of a grade-A puzzler, eyes constantly set on that next killer loop that’ll get the crowd veering off into pure XTC.

Waves of pulsing, layered techno from the revered Mala Junta resident.

If the electronic music industry is caught in the crosshairs of a battle over what makes for true techno, then D.Dan is one of the underground's great modern emissaries.

A figurehead from the new guard of DJs to arise in the '20s, the Berlin-based artist and Mala Junta resident is an ambassador for a sound that is strongly anchored in the classic roots of techno. His productions, like his mixes, are revved-up takes on the hypnotic wormholes that defined dance floors last decade, but with a fresh (and high BPM) millennial twist. 

Originally from Seattle, D.Dan became enamoured with the spectral stylings of psych rock and shoegaze in adolescence. It's not difficult to see how the cosmic tapestry of bands like Cocteau Twins became a blueprint for the entrancing music he's gone on to make as an adult. His releases on Mutant Future and summerpup are latticeworks of loops and layered percussion, custom-tooled for lost hours on the dance floor and drawn-out mixes behind the decks. 

This approach directly extends into his DJ practice, where he pairs song selections from contemporaries that mirror his own reduced, controlled approach to techno. RA.994 is a Grade A display of contemporary four-to-the-floor from flagbearers like Roll Dann and Marcal.

And like D.Dan's standalone records, his RA Podcast finds room for sweetness—the intermittent peal of an open clap, the steady ripening of a chord—while ultimately emphasising the beauty of function and form over flair.

This next guest is part of a new generation of talent coming from Japan and slowly taking over the world. Cutting her teeth on the dancefloors of Tokyo, imus is a significant and perennial player on her local scene. She’s played at Keep Hush, contributed mixes to NTS Radio and delivered her mentally challenging techno to audiences at DJ Nobu’s Future Terror parties. At the end of 2023, she also launched eulb, an event series sitting at the ‘intersection of machine, band and dance that focuses on the aesthetic aspects of electronic and spiritual sounds’. Inspired by techno, bass and all things experimental, her work pulls heavily from her context at the centre of the Japanese sound, but pushes it further and develops something unique to her own experience. Her sets are large format trips into the strange realms of her mind-altering frequencies, sonorous and full-bodied ripples and beats that explore the fringes of dance music in all of its forms. Chicago born @Antenes is a Brooklyn based synth obsessive. She builds her own modulars and then sets them to the future to cook up rough edged warehouse tracks that are gritty and bleakly atmospheric, as well as more textured, detailed ambient work. She has done installations at Moogfest as well as playing as far afield as China, Colombia and Japan, and has appeared on LIES, Silent Season, Bunker NY and Mord. She DJs as well as playing live, has roots in goth and industrial as well as noise  from her early years playing guitar, but also has a real love of techno, electro and experimental.

Her darkly absorbing mix for us this week includes tracks from Electric Indigo, Stephanie Merchak, Fjader, Oisel, Rrose, Lonefront, DJ ESP, Erica Mar, Wata Igarashi, Silent Servant, Ewa Justka, Bergsonist and Uun. It reflects her interest in a healthy amount of ominous dance hypnagogia while also drawing from a large pool of influences from the experimental to her roots in the Midwest. “The ESP track in there has some weird filtering and panning with the crunchy drums for example,” she says, “I love hearing how raw it is”.
