New York residing DJ/Producers https://soundcloud.com/johnbarera & https://soundcloud.com/will_martin update their longstanding body of collaborative work with their first 2MR release since 2017’s exceptional ‘Proceed To The Root’ sophomore album… And it might just be their best work to date.

Continuing the celestial theme of their last EP ‘History Of Space’; the EP is the result of a whole new writing technique and heller time spent jamming on Will’s Chroma Polaris synth. Comprising four tracks that simply ooze machine soul and loose-limbed groovemanship, ‘Life, The Heavens & The Earth’ is an ageless document that digs deep into the foundations while staring out into the cosmos.

The tone is set by ‘The Meaning’ (premiered on Mixmag's SoundCloud now!). Outer planetary electroid savoir faire; its crisp breaks are countered by the bulbous textured bassline throughout. It’s followed by the title track ‘Life, The Heavens & The Earth’; a spatial excursion built around a classic break and coloured with poignant arpeggiated cascades. Deeper into the EP we glide to strike warehouse gold on the venomous acid of ‘In The Depths Of Madness’, a layered analog jam that writhes and slinks dynamically in the spirit of Pierre, before closing with a track the duo feel is their most accomplished composition to date: ‘Searching For Time’. Not just a title we can all relate to but a poignant emotional workout that touches your soul in the same way you first heard the instrumental of Information Society’s ‘Running’. 

Beautiful emotive electronica from a duo who keep getting better with every release. The journey to the root continues….

Back in 2016, SAFT and Chris Gray got together to re-issue ''Sweetness You Bring''. Three years later, from the same Deep4Life record as 'Sweetness You Bring', SAFT re-issues the original version of 'Brink Of Insanity'. The original version, which first appeared in 2000, is included in this package together with three previously unreleased versions.

Joining forces for the first time are label founder Len Faki and Juxta Position, a rather fresh yet already integral member of Figure. How effectively the prolific producers worked them machines with combined strength shows in every fiber of this four-tracker.

The record‘s sides feature two alternate mixes of each track: Superstition tempts with is sultry vocal, driven by an irresistible acidic groove, fusing Juxta Position’s preference for rough and analogue sounds with the tight programming Len Faki has become renowned for. Paying tribute to UK’s gritty brand of warehouse-techno, A2 introduces a more swinging and all-out version of the track.

A lot more tender than its counterpart, Gathering Clouds slowly builds from jagged synths and droning basses, brewing up a vivid tempest of anticipation. Verging carefully on the moment of emotional release, we are left to imagine the theatrical scenery cooked up in this delicious blend of the two artists’ singular skills.

Samuel “S S S S” Savenberg is one of the earliest members of the Haunter crew, presenting his project through 2014’s Administration Of Fear, bombing the horizon with a barrage of darkened, industrialized techno. Since 2015’s Just Dead Stars For Dead Eyes though, Haunter has become the home for his most progressive and forward-thinking releases. Absence could be considered the spiritual successor to that work, venturing even further into those same lands.

A thing’s sudden absence grants its permanence in memory, so, paradoxically, this time around it’s an experience closer to being explored than exploring, more like being invaded by an empty place than invading it. Savenberg’s absent spaces lay beyond the grasp of representation, manifesting in an unsettingly familiar way. They are traversed by telluric bass phenomena, over-scaled waves of sound that can take the shape of proper, kinetically charged breakbeats (ripe with processed 808 drums) or crumble into digitzed bits. Fellow Swiss producer GIL provides with a remix, combining a slowed-down dembow beat with the doomy electronics of the original.

Following their hugely well-received, refreshingly outlandish debut EP for Phantasy, Israeli club outsiders Red Axes return to the label with another three-track delight of leftfield dance entitled ‘Sound Test’.

Debuting on Phantasy in 2018, ‘Sipoor’ by Red Axes was massive. The release received critical acclaim, not to mention heavy support within the club realm from DJs like Call Super, Jennifer Cardini, Ewan Pearson, Fort Romeau, Massimiliano Pagliara, Chloe, and many more.

Highly soughtafter by those who’ve heard Erol Alkan unleash it in recent months, ‘Sound Test’ kickstarts Phantasy Sound’s 2019 - a rolling tool for a dance floor sliding into another dimension, constructed around a dramatic, numeric countdown. A minimal, skeletal build builds (and builds!) throughout to one of the most out-there breakdowns in recent rave-blotted memory, as the Axes slowly but surely rebuild their house to even more outlandish new proportions. Ten, nine, eight, seven...

‘Shabak Shalom’ quickly snatches the record back from outer space and drags it deep into the basement, zoning in on the gritter, strobe-ready sound that defines the duo’s most club-ready work. All of the Axes’ weapons of choice are deployed as unusually as per usual; militant drums, battered electronics, fucked- frequencies, wiry post-punk guitar lines and lovingly drowned traditional instruments blend to create their own special, slightly-menacing interpretation of hi-NRG.

Finally, on the unapologetically sprawling and immediately effective closing number, ‘Kookoo Papa’, Red Axes demonstrate their inherent talent, if proof were ever needed, of conjuring rolling, simmering tension in otherworldly shades. Those who enjoyed the cartoonish motor FX of ‘Teroof’ will be delighted to find themselves found into an even wackier race this time round, hitting on the origins of Chicago jack, acid meltdowns and screeching no-wave.
