some of ya'll I know I've told this story to before
but to those of you who haven't heard me tell this story
I just want to tell you about a little trouble I've had thats all
children, I woke up early one mornin'
but just before I go any further
I want you to know that I had but two eggs for my breakfast that mornin'
and the cat had to go up on the table and knock them off
Lord and now they are gone,
but I had a strip of bacon in my ice box children
but when I turned on my gas I found the man had turned my gas off
just then I went to my front door to pick up my newspaper
and I sat down in my old easy chair, but when I switched on my lights
had found the man had cut my electricity off too
I felt so bad that I just wanted to take me a little ride
and I went outside and got in my 1938 Cadillac
started down the street
but just as I turned the corner my car ran out of gas and I had to walk right back home
and my friend, just as I was walkin through my front door I heard the phone ring
and the only girl in the world that I loved, called me and said "Clarence I want you to loan me $5"
I want to tell you I didn't have but 50 cent to my name, and I didn't have the whole of it, she put me down
at 12 noon that day I had a letter that said If I didn't have my rent in by 5 o'clock I was gonna have to get outdoors
lord my Father is dead and my Mother is gettin' old these days
my friends I just can't depend on them no more
children I felt so bad that I just wanted to sing a song
I wanted to sing a song that I have never sang before in my whole life
I guess I would've sang Part Time Love, but Johnny Taylor hadn't recorded that one yet
then I guess I would've sang Somebody Better Come Here Quick but Clarence hadn't told Calvin the words at that time
then I guess I would've sang I Need To Belong To Someone but Jerry Butler hadn't made it at that time
and as I was sittin' there wonderin'
I couldn't help but feel the tears runnin down my eyes
and I just stretched my arms to the sky
I said OH LORD!
why did you make me, a man
I got to work so hard everyday
sweat till I'm wrinkled just goin grey slow everyday
but may God understand that I'm only a man
