We are thrilled to unleash this mix by Masha into the world, and what a thrill it is! Hailing from France via Naarm, the now Stockholm-based DJ always aspires to surprise through music. Never serious, always tongue-in-cheek and bedroom dance-ready, her mixes blend all things fast, percussive, and playful (read: funny). Think tempo changes and the occasional gabber to keep you on your toes and pull you out of your slumber. This mix resonated with her and her insatiable desire for madness and disorder.

You may know of Marie through her work with Cool Room, her Skylab show ‘Carefree’, or through bumping into her on one of the many dancefloors this vibrant party qween has graced. Her ability to inspire and uplift those around her is truly a gift, and although we miss her presence here in Naarm, we are super excited to see where her European ventures take her!

From the fiery depths of yet another weary Naarm lockdown, Resonance invites you to sanguinely reminisce the dance floor amidst the hopeful turn of Spring with the fifth instalment to our mix series: presenting Slick Calf of @Unrestricted_Purpose. 

The Naarm-based DJ has been keeping himself busy in and out of lockdowns; curating Unrestricted Purpose events at Colour & The Rochester, Thank You Bar Takeovers, and most recently the third instalment of their mix series. To top this off he has also deftly forged some other appetising mixes for Naarm's independent online radio @Area3000.

For the next hour and 22 minutes, strap yourself in for some of Slick Calf's old and new dancefloor favourites - a mixture of deep house, electro and breaks sprinkled with some trancey progressive sensuality.

Resonance mix 005: Slick Calf

Get geared up and locked in for our 6th instalment with Spiderdog!!

I first met Lachie aka Spiderdog partying at Sub Club, and it was clear very early on that his eye for track selection and curation was incredibly unique and stood out from many others in the hard dance scene. The energy he translates in his sets and mixes is one of a kind 😊

A DJ and artist based between The Gadigal lands of Eora Nation and The Wurundjeri Lands of the Kulin Nation, he's brought an increasingly relentless sound to parties such as Hex Yellow, Control, INSTASIS, 4D Festival and a number of renegade raves.

He first got his start djing when he was 16/17 on Gadigal Land (Sydney) either participating or running events. “It’s always been part of my life since I’ve been an ‘adult’…but I just wanted to try DJing so I bought an old pair of cdj’s and a mixer when I was around 25 and then here we are!” 

He’s left his mark not only through his hard hitting sets, but also iconic moments such as this doozy from a Channel 707 rave in Eora (Sydney) “- the cops moved in and I tried to escape the pepper spray by climbing the walls of the warehouse. After giving them a Gandalf-esque speech in my white fur coat/short shorts combo about wanting to “eat the bacon” I fell around 5m like a wet towel and had to be rescued by a bunch of guys hahahaha.”

The mix itself was largely inspired by his surroundings, albeit stuck in his apartment near the iconic Coke sign of Darlinghurst.  “Pretty much all tracks are from people I really love and admire, both close friends, peers and then people I watch from afar. I’ve wanted to put all of these tracks into mixes but haven’t been able to make any of them work so far….then like suddenly they all came together and it worked haha. I guess it’s quite a sentimental mix.
I’m also keen on pushing other forms of energy rather than my usual mega hammer slammer vibe, creating mixes such as this one where I don’t get immediately carried away and take it straight to hell, but without losing my high nrg power.” Stand out tracks include “- a track in this mix I got off a CD called ‘MIDI SAI HIT PARADE’ when I was 17, it’s called U_Like_Monkey_Karkalush by Ove-Naxx and I was absolutely obsessed with it for years, I even played it at my 18th birthday in lieu of a speech hahaha. I’ve been wanting to put it into a mix for years and it kinda just seemed to work here. The same goes for the Dragon’s Den theme from Pokemon Gold version which immediately follows!
There’s also an unreleased track from Obelisk in there which may just be comin out on a new Australian label soon teehee.”

His current obsessions have been a chaotic, genre spanning mix but his main are two Djs Clarity (Canada) and Technokool (Hungary). “They both just consistently deliver the most insane sets and are always down for a chat which I appreciate, honestly two of the best living Djs atm IMO.”

You can also find him as the mastermind behind MEGANESIA. Drawing it’s name from the continental plate so-called Australia sits on, a radio show featured on Area3000 and upcoming label platforming a range of Hard Dance artists from across Aus. “(We’ll) be launching into releases in early 2022. Got 15 of the coolest most talented artists on board so stay tuned!“

Yet another week in lockdown hath passed. What else is there left to do but scour soundcloud for music that resembles the fervid spirit of a dancefloor with the nostalgic scent of amyl and makes you regret all the nights you left the club early :’)

Looking for a perfect accompaniment to Naarm’s first week outta lockdown? Look no further, we gotchu <3 
This stormy ol’ evening we are delighted to bring you a carefully and craftily curated mix from Kufa {@kufa.scp}. The Naarm-based soundscape aficionado spreads their musical creativity far and wide across Oceania, from PBS Show ‘Blend Corp’ {106.7FM} and producer-duo Kufacat to the neonate Haptic {@hapticmusicmelb}. We are honoured to host this eclectic mix from the DJ/producer, not even wholly representative of the wild jungle that is their music palate (’tis certainly bound to ease you back into the dizzying post-lockdown whirlwind).

Borne from a love for all things Buffy, they certainly do not fail to deliver an assortment of fast-paced sexy edits and pumping bass that your body will not be able to resist moving to.

When he’s not making Azealia edits you can find the Naarm-based DJ & designer serving cunt at the club or designing for his label Driving Blind. A certified queen of quirky samples, Prophecy Girl ever-so zealously and creatively curates an electrifying energy in his sets with that is yet to be matched in the Naarm scene. Resonance mix 010: PROPHECY GIRL

Bob Jungles. He technos, he houses, and he electros too. We are delighted to introduce beat scientist (and actual scientist), Rob - our dear friend and supporter, whose intriguing approach to mixing takes us on a sonically and emotionally diverse, yet cohesive journey for our eleventh installment. Infused with sass and peppered with cheeky samples and unexpected switch-ups, this is a mix that left me grinning and wanting more.

Rob cites his precise and detail-oriented style as being influenced by his work in the laboratory, and although (humble as always) he said this makes him less naturally “vibe” oriented, I think his intuition for setting a mood shines through brightly. He built this mix around tracks by some of his favourite fem producers, including ‘2020’ by LCY and a remix of Sexo by Doris Norton (“chaotic…and I love them”); as well as “some new-ish favourites from locals” - ‘Her’ by Logic1000 and ‘B L U YOU’ by Jennifer Loveless. And he wanted to end with something from Emma-Jean Thackray, because he just loves everything she’s making. Rob said he “tried to keep a certain flow and momentum to the mix, but also wanted it to feel quite spontaneous”. 

At the moment, Rob is countering the chaos by listening to ambient music and reading Elton John’s autobiography, but was generous enough to share a story from more “nutty” times: “I snapped back into reality sitting on a couch with a friend at My Aeon, and I asked her “oh, sorry, what was I saying?”. She replies in a completely serious tone: “… you were just telling me how you felt like a cashew.”

Resonance mix 011: Bob Jungles

We are super excited to be ringing in the new year with a mix by our very own djane, Resonance co-curator and dance floor regular. Having played at some of your favourite spots around town including Sub Club, Colour, and Revs, she feels most at home when spinning cheeky and energetic tracks and having a bop behind the decks.

Recorded in October last year, djane channeled her yearning for the club into this mix, and as a result, it is heavy on rhythmic, percussive sounds and booming bass. Starting out with some off-kilter bass music before easing into some UK techno and sultry club music and ending with a bang, this mix is a great example of  djane’s ability to dextrously blend genres, toeing the line between chaotic and considered. We highly recommend listening loud.

Resonance mix 012: djane

Been a lil while, but we are back & proud to present you with this beautiful & poignant mix by artist Phat Witch { @user-vg }.

In the word’s of the artist herself; This is an eclectic mix which creates a nest for me to call home. It features a homesick voice message from my mum, and Naarm tunes from talented artists like Moktar, Female Wizard and a special friend, Dr Chicken Gristle. I’ve weaved those tracks with familiar sounds of Iranian, Morroccan, Armenian, and Tunisian artists who really inspire me. A special track from Maral features vocals reciting ancient Zoroastrian prayers.

We are honoured to host such a creative mix where Vesta has openly and honestly explored some raw emotions while weaving together a soundscape that helps her resonates with her current experiences and her Iranian roots.

We are besotted to present to you Ria’s (aka @brown.suga.princess) Sounds of Brown + Homegrown Hotties Mix! 

Aside from writing pieces for @verve.zine, running fundraising events via @grassroots_gatherings and representing part of South Asian creative collective @kerfew.au—she is a straight up sommelier of all things jungle, footwork and reggaeton and everything in between, tightly weaving them all into a wonderfully curated intercontinental journey through sweat and sound. 

Be ready for lots of hot electronica from her subcontinent, crossing from South Asia to the MENA region, as well as (of course) some beautiful creators based in so called ‘Australia’.
