First things first – Slum People is a disastrously clunky name for a House Music duo. This is less to do with the specific pairing of words and more a case of what the latter part will immediately evoke in the mind of any house fan; They used a House Music Name Generator to select this new identity (what’s yours? it could be Fearless Dominator, which, funnily enough, is what our parents were going to call us if we’d been  girls.)

The synergistically titled “F.U.M.V.U.D.H Ep” summons a sun and moon dynamic that, intentional or non, resonates quite well within the moods and inflections of the individual pieces. On “Blow Up Da Spot & Creep Me” pinpoint bursts of euphoria erupt from collisions of synth and sample over a steadily brushed beat. Heralding the day to our impending night, the piece's are systematically torn between energized momentum of high noon and the lethargic daze of sun-soaked spring.

Then comes the inevitable moonrise of “To Make It & KnucKle Box” which plays out in inverse. Born out of a quiet, lingering hum, the more enigmatic piece is driven largely by sparse, twinkling pegs of synth. Lower basslines disperse the illusion of serenity, conjuring the lingering chaos of darkness. Eventually, several layers of synth lines collude in creation of a harmonic unity that joins the high-end’s tranquility and low-end’s uncertainty in serene acceptance of the night sky’s uncertainties.

Genre boundaries mean nothing to this dynamic duo from Chicago, T Mixwell & Scrubfish take House Music as their core template and shred it to pieces until it's completely unrecognisable. Something that's evolved over time with their body of work. It's a sensation similar to watching a Hitchcock film. If anything, Transmission is a touch formulaic, But in those moments, they're playing to their strengths—hooks, grooves, and attack over lyrical prowess and vocal performance. What's undeniable, though, is that T & Srcub create a specific, slovenly universe with their music, and while they don't move too far past the couch or the toilet, they create an exciting synth barrage from where they sit. Mike Jules has flung a few deliberate curveballs, like the "wrong" chords that rocked the "Dog" off its equilibrium. "Get A Dog Up Ya" is a tornado full of curveballs. At a slight 2 track ep, it bursts and buzzes, locking into patterns and then exploding out of them once you think you've figured them out. Mike is still partial to melody—the cough syrup flows freely after a quick hardcore fake-out at the beginning of "Dark Dog Mix"—but the hooks have lost their primacy inside the rough collage. The most interesting parts are now the serrated edges, the way textures brush up against textures, and how unstable the whole freewheeling machine can get.
