I was planning to put out another new mix but was waiting for the right tracks but then last week we learned of the devastating and untimely passing of DJ Apache. Jeff was one of the first ‘real’ DJs I ever heard live, tucked away in the back of Mr Sweets (I think it was called Roots nightclub) he would seemlessly mix everything and anything and the dance floor would be packed. Jeff would visit me at the Music Box, buy some records and invite me down to the club. I would listen to him mix and then the next day would try and copy some mixes he had done the night before, I was probably around 17! I can’t hear the likes of Congress “40 miles”, Atlantic Ocean “Waterfall “ (both included here in a newer form) and Orbital “Chime” without thinking about Jeff. I spoke to a lot of DJs/friends over the last week who said they were going to have a beer & a mix over the weekend for Jeff so with that in mind on Sunday morning I popped on my headphones grabbed a cup of coffee and had a mix, with Jeff in mind. The word legend is used far too often but he was very much a Legend & will be missed by so many. Steve Edwards.

This one’s for you Jeff!

I was arranging some tracks for this mix when I heard the awful news regarding Jeff's sudden passing and felt it only right to pay my respects in the form of both of our passions…music! 

I know Jeff was mostly well known for his hardcore rave sets but I also know he had a soft spot for soul and funk so with that in mind I’ve mixed together a full 6 hours of more chilled out 80’s club classics including one of Jeff's faves from that genre, Chaka Khan - Ain’t Nobody around the 2hr 56 min mark.

I’ve admired probably Plymouth’s longest serving and unbelievably talented DJ for over the last 30 years and Jeff will always hold a special place in my heart. An inspiration on and off the turntables and one of the key people to encourage me to start DJing myself.

Massive thank you to Peachey, Lee J, Roy, Rich Emery and all of the others artists who provided the amazing piece down the side of The Warehouse used in the vid...total respect!

On this exact date, 25 years ago, I received a demo in the post from a completely unknown DJ that Dan Prince, then editor of Mixmag, had told to send it to me... I know it was this date, as it was a Saturday morning before Renaissance that night. I had listened to this demo 5/6 times during the day - and again on the way to the club that night. I knew I’d found something special the moment I heard the mix between the first 2 tracks on the B side of that tape!

After Renaissance that night, as often happened, Sasha came back to my house the next morning... I told him I'd found a DJ who I thought was amazing, and went on to play him the tape. He too was blown away! The only writing on the tape was 'DJ JD’ and a phone number, so I called John after the weekend and told him I loved the tape and wanted him to play at the club, but I told him I wouldn't put 'DJ JD' on the flyers as it sounded like a rave DJ and instead wanted to bill him as John Digweed. I booked his first date on Saturday 5th September 1992 - and spent 4 weeks before his debut gig telling everyone I'd discovered this amazing DJ - and, of course, he didn't disappoint!! The whole club was blown away by the talent on show on his first night, and I then started to regularly pair him with Sasha at Renaissance, ahead of that iconic mix compilation, 2 yrs later, that took the S&D partnership global... so here's the mixtape that started it all, a piece of clubbing history and a significant footnote in Renaissance’s history and in the career of one of the world’s finest DJs!🔊🔊🔊
