One of the few bona fide examples of counterpoint in American popular music, Play a Simple Melody from Berlin’s first 1914 stage musical, Watch Your Step, is highly regarded and widely performed. The ragtime tune was recorded by Bing and Gary Crosby in 1950 and was later featured in the 1954 film There’s No Business Like Show Business.  Whilst one singer longs for the music of yesteryear which mother sang, the other singer disdains such time-honoured sentiment as lacking in interest and rhythm.

A digital instrumental cover of the 1924 hit that was composed by Isham Jones (1894-1956) and written by Gus Kahn (1886-1941). This song, which has appeared in movies such as "Casablanca" and "When Harry Met Sally" is one of the now many works that is now public domain in the United States.
