SSG-EG doesn't stand for engage mode. It stands for SoftwareSoundGenerator-EnvelopeGenerator. I think japanese PC's tended to call their PSGs as SSGs instead.

Could be a better/powerful DAC when converting the digital signal from the soundchip into an analog signal.

You're having trouble finding it because you're not calling it the right thing. It's called the MercuryUnit. I think PCM8 is just the name of the standard or just shorthand or something. One thing I always find weird is that it's always kinda explained as adding 8 pcm channels. So 1+8 = 8???

Very good! As an X68000 owner, I'd encourage you to do a follow up episode detailing the MIDI soundtracks. Many excellent Roland MT-32 and SC-55 arrangements are featured across the X68000 library.
