July 2024, last year,
We lost Sonya Massey to the hands of the police.
Amidst processing her tragic killing, I was building with my brother Tall Black Guy about expressing ourselves more in the moment as artists and challenging ourselves. TBG challenged me to make a beat using 3 James Brown records because I never sampled him before. It was mostly because I heard soo many classic Hiphop and R&B records that flipped James Brown since the 80s.


✂️ Challenge accepted.

My aim was to chop those records to fit how I was feeling about Sonya Massey's story in that moment. TBG put me up on Jermaine Holmes after sharing some work he did with him. I wasn't familiar with Jermaine's work at the time, but I knew he had an ill voice and that he sang background for D'Angelo on the Black Messiah tour. Days after I made this beat, Jermaine posted he was open to do features on his IG. I sent this beat to him, without even mentioning what inspired it.

This joint came together in 2020. I sat down to make a West Coast Erroll Flynnin pt. 2. That Michigan to Cali connection. I kept the drums simple but knocking. I wanted the drums to feel like something you'd hear cats beating on a lunchroom table. So i recorded myself clapping and beating on a table. Claps are a staple in my sound, to me, the hand clap is a fundamental element of that Funk. That James Brown, George Clinton, Parliament/Funkadelic, Roger, Zapp, Marvin Gaye, Bernard Wright to Slum Village funk ✨️

I chopped up this sample, laid the bassline and I knew I had something ✨️I just had a studio session with the brotha Bishop Lamont and sent him the beat originally. He told me that it was really dope, but suggested that I should actually send the beat to my other brotha, the West Coast rhyme - scheme King - Mykestro. When he first sent back the demo, we both knew the joint went crazy! Then Mykestro told me he had to get the Legendary DJ Battlecat to lay talkbox for it - Woooo!

Shout out to Bishop Lamont for the alley oop, Mykestro and DJ Battlecat for blessing this one something wild for the West Coast!

Yo De La Soul is one of my favorite hip-hop groups and one of the greatest groups of all-time. Straight up. I've been loving their new album "Cabin In The Sky". I got a little emotional thinking about Dave (Thank You Dave ) and growing up listening to De La damn near my whole life. I went back and listened to the De La Soul is Dead album. I remember how much I loved "Pass The Plugs" cause of the way they rhymed on it. I had a beat that I couldn't hear anybody else but De La Soul on, so I had fun with this joint and time traveled back to the early 90's.You can definitely hear De La Soul's influence when you listen to my crew Athletic Mic League. Brothers having fun with the music, being creative, and just rhyming. Inspiration! Salute to them brothers forever 🫡

The Reign

Retrospek, a hip-hop trio from Boston first came together in 2006 when Rah Intelligence (Producer) and JuneLyfe (MC) met A. Spendacash (MC) through a mutual friend. Rah and June had been friends and musical collaborators since high school. It was at an impromptu cypher outside a show that a light sparked in Rah's mind: Stopping Spenda mid-verse, he shared a vision for making music as a trio with himself, Spenda and Junelyfe. The next week the three met up, put on some records, and vibed out – finding common ground and shared interests that would serve as the basis for future musical collaborations. This was the beginning of the organic chemistry that has defined the groups distinctive sound. And thus in a smokey Roxbury apartment, Retrospek was born.

They met and recorded regularly for the next couple of years and in late 2009 released the EP SOMESHYTWEDID to wide critical acclaim on blogs like potholesinmyblog.com and whiskeyteeth.com,etc. They followed this up with their sophomore EP Boom Bap And Beyond which also received high-praise kevinnottingham.com, dotgotit.com, rule4080.com and etc.

Retrospek continued to record, putting out singles and working with other artists including fellow members of the Cool Collective Reps Music Group (CCRMG), a local hip-hop collective the trio founded. They also began doing more shows, in Boston and beyond, opening for and sharing the stage with artists such as Pharoahe Monch, Raekwon, Styles. P, Sean Price, Guilty Simpson, Blu, and Mikey Factz.

2012 marks the release of their debut LP, Sleepwalker's Remedy and Retrospek continues to set the bar higher for themselves with each successive release. They are a group truly greater than the sum of its parts, each individual bringing unique skills and perspectives into the equation. United by a shared appreciation for music and outlook on the craft, especially the decaying state of hip-hop, Retro continues to push the limits, injecting integrity into a music dominated by the commercial and superficial.
