PURSE IN THE HEARSE (jazz)

A composition for flute, clarinet, saxophone, viola, cello, piano and percussion. The music was inspired by the sounds of construction work on the street outside my apartment. The heavy machinery made sounds that I used as a basis for (especially) the first part of the piece and its reprise at the end.

The Czech composer Leoš Janáček used to transcribe conversations he heard on the Charles Bridge and turn them into motifs for his music. Likewise I sometimes take recordings of the spoken word, as well as other "found objects", to transform them into motifs and themes for my pieces.
