God, this song. It took forever for me to wrap my head around that drum fill, but it was worth it. This was one of those songs that looking back on it increased my skill and helped broaden my understanding of playing with other people

08 Rat and Snake

The OWWJFGPEE wasn't really a band. It was the title for an album. The album got recorded when I went on vacation to Seattle WA in august of 2003 to visit Dave Abramson (The Boxing, Impasse, The Diminished Men, Musical Masters of Bukakke). I was accompanied by drummer Chris Murphy (The Mullets, Minor Infraction, We Are the Arm), who was going out to visit Dave and Adam Parks (Someone Loses and Eye, Fighter Destroyer) , and we were both hoping to catch up with Nick Tamburro (Impasse, Scientist) Tom Carroll (Someone Loses an Eye) and Brent Antal (Someone Loses and Eye, Mumraa). The vacation consisted of jumping from one house to the next and playing music. A bunch of songs Chris and I recorded on handheld cassette dictation machines, and have since been lost. We played a few improptu open mic nights as well, and at one point literally wandered the streets of Capitol Hill playing music (I played a trumpet, poorly). 

The OWWJFGPEE album survived. It was recorded on Dave's downstairs neighbors reel-to-reel machine. Each song has it's own personality. There was no set "I'm the Bass player" or "I'm the drummer." We just picked up an instrument that was handy and cranked out a tune. On different songs I play different instruments including Standup bass (Pink Sock) guitar (Hole in your throat) Drums (Angeline) Piano (Baloney Poney, Bossa Gabe) and sing (Baloney Poney, Pink Sock). It was fun, it was free and easy, there were no restrictions. I played parts and styles completely out of my realm of experience. I look at these songs the way people would look at vacation photo's. They remind me of a great time that I had where there was no work to worry about, no immediate responsibilities besides playing music. Any music. 

I won't say it's polished, or good, or even necessarily presentable, but these songs have a special place in my memories, and I think a couple are down right hilarious. This is what happens when you take a kid who's favorite band is Black Flag, let him listen to a commodores greatest hits albume, and then try to fuse those concepts together. It's a hot mess, and I loved every second of it.

Lotion was a fun band. I don't think I drank more or was more entertained on the stage with any band I ever played with. 

Lotion is the bastard child of the first band I was ever in, The Mullets, who terrorized Ithaca highschools pop punk / alternative scene with Angry Samoans covers, Iron Maidens "Phantom of the Opera" and dangerous behavior. We were the dirty punk band that new all the older punk bands and could get beer and be bigger jackasses on the weekends, and it was a lot of fun. The Mullets featured Derek Schleelein on Vocals and Guitar, Jesse Sandvik (The Boxing) on Guitar and Vocals, and Chris Murphy (OWWJFGPEE) on the drums. Sadly, the band wen the way of all great highschool bands, and broke up when Derek and Jesse graduated in 1999 and went off to college. Chris and I would go on to form Minor Infraction, the other main branch of my twisted band tree (Minor Infraction would lead to Timur Lenk which in turn led to Chapel Perilous, which has now led to Lux Carentes, who are currently playing, and awesome, and can be found under people I'm following here on Soundcloud). After Jesse returned to Ithaca to and moved in with Chris, Dave Brown (See David Ezra Brown under people I'm following) and myself, we formed The Boxing (See set for details) for a short period with Dave Abramson. During the interim I also moonlit as the rhthym guitar player for Drunken War.

Derek Graduated from Oberlin and retuned to Ithaca around the same time I returned fro London where I went to recording school. Jesse and I had an apartment on 81 Townline Rd (See the set labeled 81 Townline for some of our more adventurous recordings at that apartment) with Eric Ungberg (Chapel Perilous) who was in Timur Lenk with me at the time. With Derek back in town we had all the elements needed to rekindle the spirit of the Mullets, except for Chris. It was an easy and haphazard solution, but I took over the drumming and Eric took over my bass playing responsibilities. The Mullets MkII was born as Lotion (Originally Lotion Axe) and we commenced writing tunes and playing concerts, bringing a drunken, high energy show to those who would have us.

This album was recorded at 81 Townline Rd in a converted chicken coup that the people who lived there before us, some crappy hippy dippy band, had converted into a decent rehearsal space. I worked at McNeil Music, and recorded the whole thing using equipment, most prominately the Boss BR1600 hard disk recorder, that I borrwoed from the shop, ostensibly for the purpose of familiarizing myself with the interface so I could demonstrate it to customers. The sessions themselves were loose, and at one point I remember talking to our neighbor, who took the high volume of sound as a good opprotunity to bring up his more pressing concern that we (by which he really meant, me) were discharging firearms in the back yard during the day, while drinking and running around (this is true, but come on, it was only a .22). Suprisingly we got a half decent recording, given our cheap supplies (I am a diehard fan of the Sennheiser e609 because of the ease of use in this session), and the fact that we had no plan, and hadn't really rehearsed. The energy is there however, and thanks to Dereks commanding vocal presence, and Jesse's sweet playing through his Marshall Combo, all the elements were in the right place to make an awesome four song demo.

*Gear Snob Note* The reverse delay effect featured at the beginning of rock robot was achieved by running Dereks mic straight into a Danelectro Back Talk Reverse Delay guitar pedal. That was our major overdub for the whole session
