The Revolutionary Arts Ensemble is a music/art project that sets itself unusual tasks and presents the weird results to whomever has the ears and eyes to digest the ensuing brew.

2020 - Music Box.
Concept:  Revolutionary Arts Ensemble collected a wide variety of music boxes and re-interpreted each tune into different genres of song.  Two concerts were performed, one at the Hawke's Bay Arts Festival, and the other at the newly opened Spaceship venue in Hastings.  Both shows were an immersive multimedia experience of visual and aural stimulation.

2019 - We Travel The Space Ways.
Concept:  Revolutionary Arts Ensemble journey the cosmos, while stopping by at the planets Mingus, Coleman, and Ayler, with the progenitor of afrofuturism...SUN RA!!!

2018 - Garden of Earthly Delights.
Concept:  The Ensemble perform an all original set inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s surreal masterpiece ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’.

2016/17 - Jazz Kung Fu.
Concept:  Same concept as the "Thing Vs Albert Ayler" project but with a broader selection of source material from other musicians including Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra and Charles Mingus.

2015 - Shostakovich.
Concept:  Perform the music of Dimitri Shostakovich to a folk tale based on the siege of Leningrad.  We have performed a preview of this show only as it is still in development.  Our plan is to do a large production.

2014/15 - Circus Music.
Concept:  Play some circus tunes.  

2014 - Monster Music.
Concept:  The Monster Music project is a tribute to the music of Akira Ifukube and the Kaiju movies of the Toho Film Company, from 1954-1995.  For this project, the Ensemble play the tunes of Akira Ifukube who wrote most of the scores for the Toho Monster movies from the original 1954 Godzilla directed by Ishirō Honda to the 1993 Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II.  We use 8-minute Super 8mm silent Toho film reels, in which we adapt Akira’s tunes to fit where we think they fit, and off we go….

2012 - RAE vs Gordons.
Concept:   Our first task as the ensemble was to interpret the Gordons legendary first EP. The project was limited to a couple of gigs, video and a studio recording of the result. 

2006 - Thing vs Albert Ayler.
Concept:  The Ensemble has grown out of a band which was called Thing, until we found out that there is of course another band already with this name, and strangely enough doing not a dissimilar ‘thing’ to us. Under the Thing name the band recorded ‘Thing vs Albert Ayler’.  The concept was to distil the raw essence from selected Albert Ayler free-jazz compositions and perform these "hooks" in a punky style.
