Stones Throw & The Beat Junkies did a joint event that was put together by ArtDontSleep in the city of Los Angeles 3 weeks ago (10.26.13). it is the first time that Stones Throw & the Beat Junkies have joined forces to do a special event. Imagine Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam Funk, Prince Paul, Karriem Riggins, Rakaa Iriscience, LMNO, the Cypress Junkies, Jonwayne, & of course, the Beat Junkies all under one roof. The History Of The Wedding Mixer Mixtape

Back in 2002, Key-Kool of the Visionaries asked me on behalf of his brother, if I was available to Dj his brother's wedding reception...the only thing is, the wedding was to be held in Hawaii.  At that time, I couldn't make it out because I had something already scheduled, and at the same time, Key's brother & his soon-to-be-wife couldn't afford to get a Dj at the last minute.  So to help out Key's brother and to serve as a wedding gift as well, I made a mixtape specifically for Key's brother & future wife to play at their wedding reception.  The mixtape was filled with all the classic 70's & 80's joints that can get a party going & music that basically Key's brother grew up listening to.

A week went by after the wedding has passed.  Key returned from Hawaii and quickly notified me to let me know that the mixtape was a success; everyone enjoyed the mix and were dancing & vibing along to it.  That made me pretty happy......Another week goes by & I happens to rent the Adam Sandler's Romantic Comedy movie "The Wedding Singer" because i've never seen it before and wanted to catch up on all the movies I hasn't seen that year.  Low and behold, while watching the movie, a certain scene in the movie with actor Jon Levitz sparked off an idea....which led up to the birth of "The Wedding Mixer" cd.  And the saying goes, "The rest is history....."

Ever since "The Wedding Mixer" mix cd was released, over the years, I've been asked & requested many times from soon-to-be married couples to Dj their wedding reception because they heard The Wedding Mixer mix cd and fell in love with it.  Of course I've never accepted any offers to Dj wedding receptions or Dj'ed a set, unless it was a real good friend of mine or close family members.    

Fast forward to now, for 2014......It's been a while since I've spun a long Dj set by myself since my mobile Dj days, as well as my high school & college days.  This time, I want to challenge myself to spin a long set in the same vein as his Wedding Mixer mix cd.  Come this Valentine's Day 2014, I will be spinning a 3-4 hour set playing all the classic 70's & 80's party joints on some "grown folk" steeze.  I have joined forces with my good friends, Footlong Developement, to bring you the Official "Wedding Mixer" party at the Echo in Los Angeles.  In honor of the event, I decided to put up the Wedding Mixer mix to give you a feel to what to expect from the official "Wedding Mixer" party.  Some of you may actually have the physical copy of the mix cd that came out in 2002.  If this is your first time listening to this, I hope you enjoy the tunes....pluse, this mix is a good indication of some of the music I'm going to play on Valentines' Day.

BTW.....I used the original vinyl for this mix & recorded it on old 4-track cassette recorder before I got Pro-Tools & before Serato was actually released.

In honor of my birthday (May 10th), today I wanted to share some mixes to the public and I wanted to do something special by finally sharing The Wedding Mixer Vol. 2 Mix CD to you.

If you know the history of the original "Wedding Mixer" mixtape, it came out in 2002.  This past February of 2014, Valentines' Day, I released a follow up to the original, Volume 2 as a special limited edition double disc mix cd....I did this because of a demand for me to do a sequel (as well as the insistence from Randall Rufino from Mixcrate).  I even threw an event to celebrate the release of the mix cd (S/O to Asad & Ryan of Footlong Development).

This is Disc 1 to The Wedding Mixer Volume 2 Mix CD.  On this particular CD, I actually put together a classic mix of Funk & Soul featuring artists like Parlament, Zapp, Stevie Wonder, Zapp, Kool & The Gang, & Michael Jackson....put together, Beat Junkie Style!

THE WEDDING MIXER VOL. 2 (DISC 1)

May is the month of the Taurus and alot of my favorite musical legends & artists happened to be Tauruses; like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, & Ghostface Killah...and ironically, I'm a Taurus as well. My birthday falls on May 10th...and to continue the tradition of sharing some goodies in honor of my birthday as well as for my fellow Tauruses, I'm posting up this mix I did a few years back. I always wanted to do a mix on James Brown, but I realized that no one can do a James Brown mix better than my brother & fellow Beat Junkie, J.Rocc, so scratch that. I thought of doing one on Ghostface Killah, but I already did one a few years ago for the Ghostface Killah doll (which is now posted on my Soundcloud page). Strike number 2! Last but not least, there's the legendary Stevie Wonder. I know that Dj Spinna & Bobbito Garcia aka Cucumber Slice are the masters when it comes to Stevie's catalogue, but I actually made a mix that was originally a birthday gift for a good friend and is a big Stevie Wonder fan. Today is Mr. Stevie Wonder's birthday (May 13), so I thought to myself, why not share it again with the people and also celebrate Stevie's birthday....I just added an intro to the mix, and what you have now, is "Wonderlove". MED - Bang Ya Head II Mixtape

It's been a while since I posted up a mix let alone on Soundcloud.

I wanted to bring back a mix series I used to do called "Soundbytes"...and basically, the theme of the mixes are just whatever musical mood I'm feeling at that moment. The last one (Volume 4) was done in 2006...that's like 18 years ago.....sheesh!

With this particular mix, I wanted to revisit the R&B/Soul vibe....some new ones, some somewhat old ones, & some obscure joints that might've pass under the radar. I actually enjoyed making this mix. Since Summer has officially started (June 2024), I think this is a perfect summer mix to bump in the ride while cruising the shoreline, or vibe to it on a nice evening while drinking wine with that special someone.

CERRITOS ON THE WHEELS OF STEEL (COW) - HISTORY OF CERRITOS HIP HOP MIX (SIDE B)

My 1st post.....My last radio gig I ever did was on 93.5FM - KDAY during the late 2004 to early 2005.  It wasn't the original 1580AM KDAY, but they were trying to mold the vibe to it.  The only thing that was from those 80's Golden Days of LA Hip Hop Radio & from the original KDAY was my good friend & LA Legend, OG KDAY Mixmaster Julio G (google him to know his history as well as KDAY.  And he can F*CK it up on the tables too....a big influence on the Beat Junkies).  He was the On-Air personality; my fellow Beat Junkie, Melo-D was his main mixshow Dj from every Mon to Fri at 7pm.  I would do Thursday nights at 7pm.  Anyways, here's 1 of my live mixes from the show.  Just some classic Hip Hop & R&B....enjoy. 

KDAY 93.5FM: RHETTMATIC MIX #13 - 1.20.05

I have been going thru some of my hard drives and found some songs that I forgot that I've produced.....so I figured I might as well share with folks and actually start an archive of songs on my Soundcloud page. I guess it's a nice way of showing & reminding people that I can make beats & produce....Haha!

In 2009, I dropped an album with my brother Jamall Bufford....you might know him as Buff1 & he's a member of the Athletic Mic League with super producer 14KT and singer you might know of: Mayer Hawthorne, as well as being in a group called The Black Opera with Magestik Legend.

Anyways, Jamall and myself formed a group called "Crown Royale" (thru the suggestion of Mayer Hawthorne & his manager/former MC Jackson Perry of "Now On") and dropped our self titled album on A-Side Worldwide/Fat Beats.  I was particular proud of this project because it was the first time that I did most of the production myself. Before we dropped the album, we wanted to give folks a taste of what to expect from us; so we dropped a Free EP courtesy of 2dopeboyz.  Most of the songs off the EP wasn't even featured on our official album.

This particular track from the EP featured the talented Kam Moye aka Supastition.  It was the first time that Jamall & Supa worked together and these guys sounded like they've been working together for a long time......I was also proud of this track because the production on this contained no samples.  I basically played all the melodies & bassline, did the arrangements, & of course the scratches.  I can't play an instrument for sh*t and this took me a long time to put this track together.  I was proud how it came out.

Crown Royale feat. Kam Moye aka Supastition - After All (Produced By Dj Rhettmatic)

I just recently found this live recording audio of when I participated in the Beat Society LA Showcase in 2004...listening to this recording had me buggin out and brought back memories.

Let me backtrack a little.....Some of you might be familar with the Beat Society Producer Showcase, some of you might not.  For me personally, this is the one that started it all with the producer showcase genre, in terms of having established & upcoming producers at that time. This showcase was the brainchild from Philly producer extraordinaire Hezekiah along with the help from the indy label Soulspazm. Beat Fanatic head honcho Slopfunkdust was also instrumental in connecting the dots. The event was always hosted by Stef Tataz & Sao. And almost every producer that had a name or just getting a buzz has graced the stage: Kanye West, Nottz, Illmind, Exile, 9th Wonder, B!nk, Oddisee, & many more.

The showcase event would always feature 4 producers playing their beats live off their respected machines, as well as having well known MCs rock over their production, plus a sample challenge round where each producer would have to flip a sample that the committee from the Beat Society has chosen...The event was mostly based in the East Coast, primarily Philidelphia.

In 2003, it was the first time that the Beat Society Showcase ventures out West, specificially Los Angeles at the Knitting Factory. There, they had Dj Khalil, Illmind, Hezekiah, & the Dilated Junkie himself, Dj Babu. I had the honor of spinning music in between. What was also monumental, Dilla & Madlib were in the house chillin in the background peepin out the event.

In 2004, they had another Beat Society LA showcase (again at the Knitting factory), but this time, they asked me to participate as a producer.  I was very honored, and to tell you the truth, I was hella nervous. "Why?" you ask? Well, I had to share the stage with some of my favorite producers who happen to be also my friends: Jake One, Marco Polo, & Kev Brown. To be on the same stage as these heavyweights had me shook....haha! I had alot of pressure, (1) because I was repping the hometown and didn't want to let Los Angeles down and (2) the general public didn't really know me as a producer; I was known more for being a DJ/Turntablist and I wanted to showcase my production to the public.

When you listen to the audio, you can hear each producer's individual style and what equipment they were using: Jake had the ASR-10, Marco Polo & Kev Brown had the MPC 2000XL, & me...I had the MPC2000 & the Technics 1200 (yeah, I brought my set up at that time...lol). You can tell I was really nervous...haha. Also, when you listen to the audio, you might be familiar with some of the production that we played that night, especially Jake's production of De La Soul's "Rock KoKane Flow" & WWE's John Cena's wrestling intro song "The Time Is Now". I played beats that would eventually make onto the Visionaries' 4th album "We Are The Ones".

All in all, I had a great time sharing the stages with these guys, bonding & cracking jokes, & showcasing my beats. And it was a great feeling when my peers who I am a fan of their work gave me my props as a producer that night....that meant alot to me. I am honored to be featured & be part of this historic moment of the Beat Society history.

In honor of our Cypress Junkies European Tour (10/7/16 - 10/21/16) that Eric Bobo & myself are on right now, I thought that I post up a song that we did back in 2011 for our Cypress Junkies Mixtape/EP.  

Everybody might know the CJ's for our live show performances, but we rarely show our production side.  
This little ditty is called "Astrofunk" where we show some of our musical influences that we grew up listening to. I did the drum programming & of course Bobo did the live percussion, with both Bobo & myself did the keyboards & sequencing.

We will definitely be making more songs/productions in the near future, but for the meantime, I hope you like this old intergalatic funk joint we did a few years ago.

Peace Everyone,

Just recently while doing some cleaning in my home studio, I found a bunch of old cassette tapes which were the aircheck tapes of the Beat Junkie Hour......This is an old recording of an episode of the Beat Junkie Hour Radio Show on KWIZ 96.7FM back in 1993/94  KWIZ was a type of station that you had to pay to play on the air, and at that time, it was $200 or $300 for an hour slot.  Even though there was alot of us, we really didn't have the money to always pay for it, so we would get some sponsors to help us pay for our airtime (as you will notice with some of our "commercials". LOL!).....As you can also tell from the recording, we were pretty young, too excited to be on the airwaves, and horrible on the mic, but we were playing alot of the classic underground as well as breaking some new music from the West Coast; we were the first ones to play the Nonce, Ras Kass, and Dilated Peoples when they were known as the Fatliners. This is about the same time when the Baka Boyz first came to LA and started working at LA's Power 106.

Around this time, the crew was starting to grow, as well as starting to make a reputation in the Dj Battle circuit like DMC & the Rap Sheet Battles....also a little tidbit of information; we had 3 short-lived members in the Beat Junkies at that time: Special J, Dj Sweet Pea (now know as the producer Paul Poli, who produced such hits for the Black Eyed Peas. Christine Millian, & Ashanti), & Dj Rectangle....yes, THAT Dj Rectangle!  And this is before Babu & Mr. Choc became official members of the Beat Junkies....officially, there are 13 members in the Beat Junkies.

On this particular episode, you actually get to hear Beat Junkie members that you may or may not be familiar with: Dj Curse, Tommy Gun, & Dj Sweet Pea, as well as J & myself in the mix and the mic.  We also shout out other members like Shortkut, D-Styles, Melo-D, Icy Ice, Symphony, Havik, & What?! Most of the time, when you listen to the show, we mostly be cracking jokes on each other, do alot of shoutouts, try to pick up on chicks on the phone, or even hanging up on them....but you can tell we were having fun.

While transfering this from casette to Pro Tools, listening to these tapes reminded me of how young and carefree we were back then; i also cringed at how we sound on the mic (i must've said "yknow what im sayin" at least 20 times) as well as my mixes.  J always kills it, even back then....boy, have times changed...LOL!!  

I'll try to upload more recordings of the the show later down the line....I'm still going thru tapes and transfering onto protools.  Anyways, here's a little piece of Beat Junkie History for you to experience.....enjoy!

I was just going thru my hard drives to look for some files & I happen to discover this unreleased track that I produced for my fellow Visionary brother Dannu of Writer's Block.  This was made in 2010.  It was originally for Dannu's solo album "Virgo Summer" on Soulspazm Records, which I was an executive producer as well as producing 2 tracks on the album.  This track didn't make the album because it didn't fit the vibe of the album, but I always though it was dope.  I totally forgot about the song.  I even forgot that I did the hook on this song as well...haha!  Thought I put this up & share it.  Another throwback to some of my unreleased production.  Hope you like it!

In honor of the gawd's birthday, Sean Price, I'm posting up this remix I did for producer Cook Classics' project "The New Classics", which was released in February 2009.  The song featured emcees Cymarshal Law, Sha Stimuli, & of course Kimbo Price himself, Sean P, with the scratch hook by the homie Dj Inka One. Cook asked me to participate on the project by doing a remix for the song. I was honored.  The original version was dope already because it was some classic Boom Bap Hip Hop, so I wanted to do it justice by flipping it with a more darker feel. Everything was the same except I add scratches on the outro.  The remix never made it on the project but Cook was gracious enough to release separately.  But the biggest surprise & compliment is when Sean called me outta nowhere & said he loved the remix, and basically said "Send me some beats son!".  That practially made my day.  Sean Price is one of my favorite MC's & I'm very lucky to know him personally, but unfortunately I never had the opportunity to officially work with him. It's practically 4:08am, Wednesday morning.  It is officially my birthday.  I've been up all night burning the midnight oil to finish this particular project so I can keep the tradition of releasing new or unreleased music for free on my birthday.  I have been doing this for the last few years.  Some of you might know some of the projects I released: My Stevie Wonder mix (Wonderland), the Aloe Blacc/Rhettmatic unreleased album, just to name a few.  One of the other projects I released for free was the Excerpts From The SP1200 Beat Compilation. it's some of my unreleased SP1200 beats that I made between the years of 1994-1998.

Fast forward during towards the last days of April 2017, for whatever reason, I just had the urge to make a beat on the EMU SP1200 Drum Machine Sampler.  It is my first ever Recording Equipment that I ever made beat with.  I purchased the SP1200 for $2500 back in 1991 & made beats for the Kozmonautz album, the first 2 Visionaries album, & a few Underground Indy Hip Hop records during the early & mid 90's. Turning on the machine & hearing old beats, got me inspired to see if I can make beats with it again.  Man…..I forgot how difficult it was use in terms of really sampling and chopping up music & programming.  And here's the real kicker, compare to the MPC 60 & other machines that were out at the time, you only had 10 seconds on the SP1200 to be really creative & make a beat. With only such a real limited time to create a beat, you really had to learn how to be creative & learn how to do techniques.  And man…..I almost had a meltdown because I I totally forgot how to use the SP, shah!  

Once I figure out how to chop, sample, program the machine, it was on & cracking.  To tell you the truth, these beats are probably not my best, but I had so much fun reconnecting with the SP.  It was very therapeutic for me making beats on the SP1200 again with all the crazy madness going on. I only labeled this project "Volume 1.5" just because it's a continuation from the first volume, up to date, but it's also marks the first time I made a few beats on the SP1200 since 1998.  Unfortunately, I only made a few beats because it could be time consuming plus I have my own personal schedules to meet.  This is also a prelude to my first official instrumental album that being released next Friday (May 19th) on Street Corner Music (Shoutouts to my brother Houseshoes).  Anyways, I hope you like my little beats back into time making 16 bit dirty classic Boom Bap Hip Hop, even though I might be pushing it to the red on the system.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for even taking the time to listen to these beats.  And thank you to the homes Pete Rock & Madlib for the SP1200 inspiration.  It's now 4:41am & I am running on fumes.  Hopefully I made sense writing this down because I starting to doze off….hahaha!  Happy birthday to my fellow Tauruses. As you know, to celebrate my birthday every year, I always try to do my best to make some music & share it as a way to say thank you, but this particular project was a bit of a struggle. Originally I was going to make a sequel to "Excerpts From The SP1200" but unfortunately my SP1200 took a dump when I turned it on. My next resort was to plug up my MPC2000 & unfortunately as well, it's also buggin out; which means I have to get both of my drum machine samplers to get repaired (Forat, here I come). Plus I only started 2 weeks ago, which really didn't give me any time to really marinate because I had such a busy schedule. On top of that, just a few days before my birthday, I get sick & get some crazy rash on my hands. Yet, I wasn't going to let anything stop me for trying to get this done.


Of course I can always rely on my current way of doing production & use the Propellerhead Reason software but I wanted to really challenge myself. So what I did instead is was use Pro Tools as my way of making beats this time. No drum programming, playing keys & basslines; just straight chopping up, looping, layering samples from records, cut & paste style....basically, on some Raw Sh*t!! It was more tedious & time consuming than my other methods of doing beats, but I have to tell you, it was hella fun. I just listened to bunch a records, recorded it, sample, chop, & however the final product came out, mistakes & all, this is what you're listening to right now. No overthinking, just went with the flow. It was pretty liberating.


Anyways, as always, this is my way to celebrate another year on this planet & my humble way to say thank you to everyone that has directly or indirectly, supported, inspired, motivated me in one capacity or another. I am very thankful.

Peace Everyone…..

Today is February 7th, 2013….which means it is the birthday of one of the greatest Hip Hop Producers of all time, James Yancey aka J Dilla.  Today he would've been 39 years old.  It is incredible that every month of February for the last 8 years that Dilla's life & music is celebrated around the whole world.  It is also bittersweet because he was taken from us in such an early age when it looked like he was really get ready to take the world by storm.  I've been very lucky & blessed to be part of his close circle of friends when he moved to Los Angeles.  Not only was he was a talented individual and one of the nicest & humble guy I ever met, he was also a private person…..you definitely don't want to get on his nerves…LOL!!

I know there's a lot of Dilla Tribute mixes out there, and me personally, I don't think there's anyone that can out top a Dilla mix that was made by my fellow Beat Junkie & the 3rd Member of Jaylib, the Funky President himself, J.Rocc.  The only one who can possible come close would our good friend, Houseshoes.  I already made 2 mixes a few years ago, but I was inspired again to work on another one.  I tried to finish the mix late last night but got real tired….I just finally finished this mix before the day was over.  I definitely was trying not to repeat songs like I did on my previous Dilla mixes but sometimes you can't help going back to his classic catalogue.  Anyways, here's my third installment of my "J Dilla Whatupdoe" mixes, a 30 minute vibe mix.  Unfortunately, we also lost another Musical legend a few days ago….Mr. Donald Byrd, and i actually added the original "Think Twice" song to the mix as well as Dilla's version, in paying homage to the legendary musician.

Rest in Peace to Donald Byrd…..and Rest In Peace & Happy Birthday to one of the greatest….J Dilla.

JDILLA WHATUPDOE MIX VOL. 3

It's been a while since I posted up on Soundcloud.

Here's a mix I did a few years ago but really never got the official push until now. If people have been following me on my social media, people would know that I recently have a passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Now am I good at it? Hell no...but it definitely helped change my life. I lost a lot of weight & have been the healthiest I have ever been. Also the philosophy of Jiu Jitsu has even helped me with the discipline & learning aspect towards everything I do in life: Djing, creativity, teaching, etc.

Anyways, a good friend of mine, Bear Quitugua, a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and the owner of well respected Jiu Jitsu Kimono Gi company called Shoyoroll, asked me to do a mixtape for him. Bear is a big Reggae music head so I did my best to cater to his taste. He's a traditional Reggae fan so I make sure to put in classic Roots, Lover's Rock, & Riddims into the mix (of course I put Bob Marley in there too...lol). And instead of spinning chunes like a Reggae selector, I actually put my spin into the mix, Beat Junkie Style! Anyways, hope you guys enjoy some of the classic massive chunes....Seen! Respect!!
