The Hand That Holds The Chain

I wrote Pointless in a motel room on Santa Monica Blvd after 12 weeks of working up in Los Angeles, almost 200 miles away from my family.  The song is a commentary on the oppressive cloud of negativity I felt emanating from the vast majority of everyday people as they went about their lives around me.  People there did not have the same friendly, positive outlook I have come to appreciate from my hometown here in San Diego.

"Pointless, it all seems so pointless, when everything is so grey (no color, no life), and desolate (alone in a crowd of millions), and dark (a pervasive feeling of hopelessness throughout the whole area)."

"If the end of the world is here, then bring it, but don't hold me on the edge of the end of time; in a world devoid of hope, devoid of anything but hard-earned misery."

- This line came from a homeless man holding a sign that read "The end of the world is here" outside a seven-eleven store. I gave him a buck and he told me he had been holding that sign on that corner for twenty years.  I noticed it said that the end of the world is here, not near, as if where we were living was the hell everyone fears.

"I'd keep my own company, but I'm not the kind of man that I want to be."

-Will we ever be who we want to become?  At what point is it alright to accept who we are? Isn't that the point at which we cease to grow and improve?

"Look at all the pretty girls, trapped in bodies wasted by time"
-In an ugly city where outward beauty is the most valued commodity, I met a few good people who had been valued for their good looks and were now not valued because those looks had faded with age. The fact they had been devalued brought down their spirits, turning them into truly ugly things, and that made me wonder if they had ever truly been beautiful at all.

"If I told you I was a hero, it would be a lie."
-Every man is a liar, and the one we most deceive is ourself. 

"I look at all the defeated faces, in empty places, damned by time; a broken world filled with billions, standing in line for their turn to die.  We're all just waiting to die."
-A downward spiral of negativity, taking all the joy out of life, making people hardened and angry, depressed and negative, until all life feels like a waiting room for the grave.  It affected me greatly and memories of living and working up there reminds me to take joy in every good thing I see in life and appreciate every moment.

Pointless

After my father died in 2011 I found myself unable to sleep many nights.  Over the past several years, when I find myself thinking about my dad and unable to sleep, I go downstairs and try to write songs about how I feel.  I have never been successful at writing anything with lyrics, because my feelings have thus far been too strong for any words to do them justice.  I have, however, written three instrumentals. 

In 2011 I wrote "Afraid to Close My Eyes", in 2012 I wrote "March of the Recollection", and in 2013 I wrote "All Things Must End".
