“Written when we were coming back into normality after the pandemic but many were struggling. This song delves in darker themes longing, helplessness, and the pervasive silence surrounding mental illness. It's a heartfelt plea for connection and understanding, born out of the pain of watching someone close to me struggle from afar. It explores the complexities of mental health and addresses the feeling of never really knowing the full picture of someone and what they’re dealing with. ‘Where Do You Go?’ comes from the idea that you can be so close to someone and think they’re happy but behind closed doors they are really struggling. It’s a reminder that we are never truly in access to always seeing or knowing the full picture.

I hope this song resonates deeply with anyone who has ever felt the weight of silence and the longing for connection in the face of adversity or has been through a time where they felt isolated and cut off from society. It's a reminder to treat people with kindness, compassion and understanding and to remember that even in our darkest moments, we are not alone, and that the bonds of friendship and love have the power to illuminate the path forward.”

Today, rising Scottish singer/songwriter Rhona Macfarlane has released her new single, ‘See You Grow’, a touching ode to siblinghood. 

The single is the latest to be taken from her highly anticipated debut album, As The Chaos Unfolds, which is set for release on January 24th, 2025. The album, recorded in the Autumn of 2023 at Watercolour Studios in the serene Scottish Highlands, was co-produced by Macfarlane and Matt Ingram, known for his work with Laura Marling and Lianne La Havas. 
Of her new single, Macfarlane says: 
‘This song is an ode and a declaration of love to siblinghood. It’s a heartfelt reflection on the journey of sibling relationships, as they evolve from childhood into adulthood. Told from my perspective as an older sibling, it captures the universal struggle of wanting to guide and shape a loved one, while recognizing that they ultimately need to find their own way. Through it all, the song is a reminder that family bonds and love endure, even as each person grows into their own.’

“‘Return To The East’ is about going back to your roots, back to simplicity and in turn overcoming doubt, reclaiming personal identity and finding clarity and strength in who you are. 

It was written during a visit to my hometown of Montrose, on the East Coast of Scotland. I was on a bike ride towards Lunan Bay on a sun-drenched day when I entered a deep reflection triggered by the landscape around me. The sea, wild grasses and ploughed fields transported me back to my childhood. I was not long out of university at the time and was trying to find my feet, figure out who I was and what I wanted away from the external noise of city life in Glasgow and the influence of others.”

Rhona Macfarlane is a rising Scottish singer-songwriter whose emotive voice and evocative storytelling have been described as ‘casting a gentle spell over her audience.’ Macfarlane creates a deeply immersive and emotional soundscape, whether through gentle guitar and intimate vocals or expansive, cinematic arrangements with soaring strings, crafting worlds that feel both vast and personal. Her work has been described as “building an atmosphere of tranquillity and respite”, drawing listeners into a space of reflection and serenity.

Hailing from the small North-east seaside town of Montrose in Scotland, Rhona Macfarlane was brought up in a musical household where creativity was boundless. Her early years were spent immersed in music, whether that was through Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell or Rickie Lee Jones on the record player, or the sounds of family playing piano, violin, guitar, bagpipes or clarsach. With ancestors from St Kilda and the Outer Hebrides, Rhona’s childhood included frequent trips to Harris where she was surrounded by folk music and her Grandmother’s Gaelic songs. She began learning violin and piano at an early age and into her teens picked up the guitar and began songwriting.

Through songwriting opportunities such as “Hit the Road” and classical music experience with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland she quickly became enchanted by the world of songwriting while also developing a deep passion for the violin which she subsequently went on to study at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This environment influenced her songwriting to hold elements of classical music, the folk tradition of storytelling at its centre but in turn manages to deliver it in an entirely modern light.

As The Chaos Unfolds is an evocative collection of songs that captures the essence of a “coming of age” experience. Written during her mid-20s—a time of profound personal change—the album delves into themes of love, identity, mental health, and the often-chaotic journey of navigating early adulthood.

Latest singles from the upcoming album have received widespread support from the likes of BBC Radio 2, Radcliffe and Maconie on BBC 6 , BBC Ulster and numerous BBC Scotland shows such as single of the week on the ‘Afternoon Show’, Ricky Ross ‘Another Country’, Travelling Folk, Iain Anderson and BBC nan Gàidheal. Tracks have also received recognition and support from Spotify editorial playlist ‘Scotify’ and the likes of Record Of The Day, Americana UK and CLOUT.
