Vinyl Richy - Wu-Tang Wednesday - Chamber 1 (72 Minute. Wu Mix) [FREE D/L]

This is the pilot episode of the podcast version of my second book, 'Scratching The Surface: Hip Hop, Remoteness, and Everyday Life' (HHO Books, 2020). If you are reading this, it is likely that you too are a Bboy, a hip hop adopter, practitioner or head that discovered hip hop in the 1980s. It’s also likely that you grew up in the UK, or at least some geographical location far away from the origins of hip hop culture. You may also know that my previous book, 'Provincial Headz: British Hip Hop and Critical Regionalism' (Equinox Publishing Ltd., 2020),  explores the complex ideas connected to hip hop and the regional-rural areas of the UK during the 1980s. 'Provincial Headz' attempts to make sense of some of these ideas within a frame that is part theoretical, part experiential, in addition to beginning to explore a new subfield of autoethnomusicology. Furthermore, 'Provincial Headz' serves as an introduction to these complex ideas, and I am optimistic that it will act as a starting point for many studies of regional-rural hip hop as well as methodological explorations into autoethnomusicology. However, as I was writing 'Provincial Headz', the fusion of epistolē, prose  and academic inquiry in the narrative forced me to consider writing a book which was purely memoir driven; a series of stories which describe the events that forged my understanding of hip hop during its infancy in the UK. Although these stories may often appear mundane, banal and seemingly insignificant, they shaped my world, and I am sure, similar stories shaped the world of others.

SCRATCHING THE SURFACE: HIP HOP, REMOTENESS, AND EVERYDAY LIFE, PILOT EPISODE: JANUARY 1983

Wu-Tang Clan were arguably one of the most influential groups in hip hop history, for many reasons. For starters they had so many differing personalities, you were bound to like (someone in the group). They had ground-breaking production (courtesy of the Abbot himself). They basically ran the game after they dropped 36 Chambers.

Due to the large amount of group members (9 originally), 3rd party affiliations were bound to pop to ride the shaolin wave. We saw this with Sunz Of Man, Kill Army, Gravediggaz, etc. This introduced an often confusing side-cast of characters to say the least. One of these 90′s off-shoots was GP-Wu, a four man crew from the temple who were never “officially” sanctioned, but were accredited none the less.

Short for Gladiator Posse, the team first appeared on the first 2 projects by Wu’s youngest (affiliate) member Shyheim. They released one album, which did kind of poorly (to put it lightly), but they did had some gems. This is one of the joints I came across on a dig back in like ’98. I had heard the track on a college radio show, so I knew what I was in for. The track, Chamber Danger, is backed with a pseudo party joint called Party People. Chamber Danger is crazy dope though. I’ve included both joints here with the instrumental. They had another joint I was never able to track down on vinyl, but I posed the video below.

Gp-Wu: Chamber Danger/Party People

Adam de Paor-Evans is Reader in Ethnomusicology at University of Central Lancashire, UK. His research is focused on the relationship of the non-obvious, societal, rural and remote phenomena with hip-hop culture. He is author of the monograph 'Provincial Headz: British Hip Hop and Critical Regionalism' (2020), and has contributed chapters on the subject to the books 'Consuming Architecture' (2014), 'Sounds Northern' (2018) and 'Rurality Re-imagined: Villagers, Farmers, Wanderers and Wild Things' (2018), as well as a range of journal articles and papers. He runs Hip-Hop Obscura, a scholarly research collective and is a co-editor of the journal Global Hip Hop Studies. As Project Cee, he has been an active practitioner in British hip-hop since his first stage appearance in 1989 and between 1989-1992 was a member of pioneering Devon hip-hop group Def Defiance. Since 2012 he has been signed to B-Line Recordings, for whom he has appeared on 11 releases. He also performs original 45-only DJ shows (online/offline) under the pseudonym RARE~GRILLS. He is a member of The UCLan Research Centre for Migration, Diaspora and Exile (MIDEX), The UCLan Music Research Group, and the European Hip Hop Studies Network.
