Underground Japanese Hip-Hop Mix - Parker Mah on Beats from the East

This modest offering is a sound collage that asks the question, What does collective liberation mean for Palestine and Palestinians? These songs reflect upon such themes as the hypocrisy of freedom in this climate of widespread political apathy and systemic oppression and discrimination. These songs impress upon us the importance of collective action on the basis of shared struggles, for the liberation of black, brown and indigenous bodies is inextricably linked to the liberation of Palestine; as evidenced in the main part of this mix, a poem which was found in the jail cell of Black Panther field marshal and revolutionary writer George Jackson, after he was assassinated while incarcerated in 1971. It was mistakenly attributed to him, which goes to show the resonance of the situation in the US at the time with that of Palestine. It was originally written by Palestinian poet and freedom fighter Samih al Qasim: The Enemy of the Sun.

This EP represents one half of a series of original portraits based on the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac, inspired by jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams' seminal 1945 album The Zodiac Suite.

12 people, each acquaintances and each born under a different chinese astrological sign, were captured in individual portraits - 6 musical portraits and 6 video portraits - and presented at Studio 01 at OBORO in May 2012.
The entire work, entitled 12 CHARACTERS, was commissioned by the Festival Accès Asie in Montreal for "Moments," an annual performance series based loosely around the themes of Networks and Interactions (be they across cultures, borders or disciplines), and highlighting emerging Asian-Canadian artists.

Woven together as a continuum of aural and visual vignettes, these oblique yet concise portraits were inspired by people and their qualities as seen through the composer's eye. By layering present experiences over past histories, 12 Characters became a potent living statement on mixed self-identities and the diverse qualities that unite us, presented through video projections and a live musical performance.

The musical portion of this project, recorded live at the performance, are now being released for the first time as a stand-alone 6-track EP. Enjoy!

04 Mouton 羊

CON MAR Y RIO es el fruto de una feliz colaboración transcultural entre Montreal (Quebec) y Barranquilla (Colombia). Nacido del mestizaje de dos corrientes musicales, la improvisación jazz y los ritmos Afrocolombianos, este álbum pone de relieve el rico patrimonio musical de la costa Atlántica colombiana, manteniendo el sabor del jazz percusivo de Rhythm & Hues (Parker Mah).

Estas composiciones originales se basan en los estilos musicales tradicionales de leyendas como Totó la Momposina y Son Palenque, la exuberancia de sonidos carnavalescos, y de la energía singular que tiene la ciudad de Barranquilla. Su forma se moldeó durante un período de seis días, en el marco de una residencia de composición de esa misma ciudad, en colaboración con LOJIQ (los Oficios Juventud internacionales de Quebec) y la Fundación Casa de Hierro.

La incubación creativa, que ayudó a formar un grupo de músicos de alto calibre, culminó en la 11ava presentación del festival Café al Aire Libre, un festival de arte y música que se realiza cada año en un histórico barrio de Barranquilla, Barrio Abajo.

A mix of vinyl, samples, live instrumentation, and effects, this track was recorded live during a performance at Articule Gallery in Montreal, December 12th 2020, in the context of a group show entitled "Soul, with a difference".

DESCRIPTION
The face mask is the ubiquitous new hall pass. It protects from infection and insulates the wearer from the fear of what they cannot sense. It is also a physical, social and psychological barrier, a fitting metaphor for the suffocation of BIPOC voices and the invisibilization of their struggles that have redoubled in intensity in 2020, the year of the pandemic, the year we came up for air, gasping.
What happens when expression can no longer be stifled? What happens when energies and emotions break their confinement? Parker Mah (Rhythm & Hues) channels these questions in his latest performance work, in which the performer is (all but) captive in his bubble. Music and words reflecting and amplifying the experiences of black and brown bodies find a way to escape through the plexiglass. Microscopically, vibrationally, the air around us quivers with life.
Performances were aired at random 4 times between November 27 - December 13th for a maximum of 2 hours.

Afloat - Parker Mah

Musical vagabond and inveterate digger, Parker Mah aka Rhythm & Hues has been sharing his offbeat selections for over a decade. As a featured DJ, he has set dancefloors alight in places as far-flung as Mexico City, Cotonou and Hong Kong. Co-founder of the Tumbao DJ collective, his specialty spans the afro-latin-brazilian-caribbean spectrum, with a predilection for vinyl. 
Musician, composer and radio show host, his passion is to broaden and share his interest in the socio-cultural legacy of these musics, and the stories they tell of migration and cross-pollinisation. 
His sets are a potion for curious and thirsty ears!
