Benedikt Frey makes his debut on Rhythmic Culture Records with ‘Hoover’. The German producer–known for his previous work on labels such as ESP Institute, Hivern Discs and his own R.i.O. imprint–delivers a 4-track EP that is a journey through the breakbeat spectrum with a distinct focus on sonic experimentation. From the hypnotic dynamic in ‘Blue Lights’ complimented by the vocals of DALO, to the intriguing dance floor rhythms in ‘Henry’ and ‘Deadlines’ and downtempo mesmerising track ‘Trees’, ‘Hoover’ puts another side of Frey’s work in the limelight.

Providing the signals through the Rhythmic Culture podcast this week is Ogazón. The part-Spanish, part-Luxembourgish artist has cultivated her skill and selection process in Amsterdam’s after-hour scene and it has been the constant discovery of new music and like-minded people that triggered her artistic career. Now residing in Berlin, her rhythms find inspiration in the eclectic and somewhat wilder characteristics of the city. Not bound to a sound in particular, Ogazón is best in arranging a coherent thread of feelings throughout her sets.

In this mix she touches upon the more blissful sounds from her wide palette. Full of mesmerizing tones, dreamy textures and even some breaks, this is a beautiful journey.

"Apparatus“ is Rizla Ops’ debut EP on Voitax, a deeply personal creation born swiftly amidst the heartbreak of losing a close friend, Ollie Mazgaj. Crafted during a period of introspection, the EP became an anchor, the only thing that felt right in a world detached from the club and daily routine. 

Sonically diverse, "Apparatus“ explores techno, drill, amapiano, grime, and garage, maintaining a common thread of dissonance, functionality, and groove. The title track, „Apparatus, stands out as an outlier in Rizla Ops’ discography, featuring big melodic moments that capture the raw emotions of the artist at that particular time. Despite his usual preference for conveying ideas through rhythm and sound design, this EP marks a turning point, hinting at future experiments with melody and harmony.

Carré’s flair for lush, dreamy atmospheres is unmatched, and I feel honored to have been able to give her a platform to showcase that. The opening’s quiet pull intensifies until it parts like a veil, revealing a meticulously sculpted deep-space landscape. “Che” and “Outer Orbit” push deeper into fog-laden percussive interplay, perfectly suited to a Bay Area warehouse. "Face Off" delivers sharp-edged, gritty bass manipulations and rhythmic shards that feel crafted for techno wayfarers in pursuit of the ever-elusive drop.

Remixes arrive from Brooklyn’s Sobolik, key member of Kindergarten Records and All Centre, and SF scene staple Oso Feo of Sutro FM, each reframing the EP for distinct underground territories.
